Re: Lauwiliwilinukunukuoioi

Everyone knows the longest fish name, the hawaiian humu humu nuku nuku apuaa, right? NOPE! The dubious distinction (because, seriously, what does a fish care?) goes to another native fish...

humu humu nuku nuku apuaa rolls off the tongue much easier than... whatever that collection of vowels and occasional consonants is supposed to be.

Not really. You have the same repetition that makes the humu's name fun to say. (Wili wili nuku nuku oi oi.) Same deal.

Thank you for letting us know this. I probably didn't need to know this, but now that I do, it will be stuck with me forever.

I personally like the other one:

"loe willy willy nookoo nookoo OI OI!"

This one is funnier to me because you can scream Oy Oy! at the end. And I'm always a fan of the hawaiian glottal stop on a lot of the names of their wildlife.

Hello , How did you make the fish, with a text wrap on adobe?

It's awesome

I'm guessing that SkekTek used the 'create outlines' feature in illustrator for text and changed the anchor points.

Nope. Totally sketched by hand- drew the outline, then went through several iterations of pencilling in the letters, scanning the result, then once I got them where I liked them- did the final changes in Illustrator.

Here are the last few sketches before the rest was digital- note the middle one where I screwed up and spelled lau wili wili wili... too many willies

What a great design! The State of Hawaii is in your debt!

As a personal preference, the fish/name itself would have been awesome too.

Considering one of the projects I work on involves the native birds of Hawai'i, I thank you for your wonderful comment! The only think I regret on this design is not putting in the glottal stops.

Probably. I was glancing through thumbnails and saw this one and thought, "Oh. Lau wili wili nuku nuku oi oi. Longest fish name. Right."

I'd completely forgotten that I'm NOT supposed to know that! :$

While I will probably never wear/buy this shirt, you are definitely getting my vote for all your hard work. I had completely forgotten about the huma huma fish...and now I have another one to someday remember!

"The long-nosed fish which flitters around like a wiliwili leaf." No one needed to know that either, but what the heck - we're being so educational here.

I don't think the "longest figh name" text is really necessary and it bothers me a little.
Great design though!
