Amazing, again! The faces are so funny... and really digging the red (love so many of your designs, but feel like they are too often on drab greys). Wonderful idea and so cutely done!

WAAAAY BITD (like 1999... before Tumblr and instant blogs) there was a Web site called cat-scan.com (now owned by someone else) that collected images of cats on scanners... hours of tear inducing photos with commentary and hate mail. Any shots with butts and/or nipples were called kitty p0rn... lol

I guess someone picked up on the idea... http://thecatscan.tumblr.com/

^Hehehe, I didn't see this idea before or the cat-scan.com. I was only playing with the words "copy cat" to illustrate a pun!

I always try to do some research and I didn't find similar existing work, but the idea is very simple, and it could have been used in the past. I hope mine is considered different enough!

People come up with similar ideas all the time, but I find it hard to believe that you've never seen this idea before, considering this shirt got 7th place in a derby where you printed. I also think there was an extremely similar shirt on teefury at some point.

Regardless though, this shirt is very cute and well executed- much better than a lot of the designs you have done recently, in my opinion.

Re: COPYCAT

Yeah Walmazan, stop trying to make shirts that are almost identical to ones that people already own. No one likes buying the same shirts over and over. I'd give you examples but there aren't any on Woot.

Whether it's original, should or shouldn't have been done because of it's simplicity or needs rejecting for being similar to other shirts is for some staff members to wrestle over. But if we're bothered because we've seen something like it before somewhere then everyone needs to stop with the splatter trees and pop culture designs because I've seen just a couple of those floating around. I have zero doubts that Walmazan came up with this on his own but if he didn't or knew it existed elsewhere, well how f'ing genius is it that he made a shirt called COPYCAT in which he mimics an existing idea.

We can all debate on when it is that one more cupcake or one more turtle is going to give us all cancer but if we're talking about original ideas or a lack thereof on a CAT derby, I have to say that I find it amazing how many people independently thought up a design involving a cat, a pop tart, and a rainbow. And that no shirts or images of that existed until this derby. That my friends, is uncanny but is a true example of originality.

You forgot about the latest derby trend, the "sequel shirt", also known as the "I've already won a derby with this design, let me make a new design with the same exact concept, and print again!". Actually, that's not really new, it's been happening for a while, the difference is we've stopped pretending that those type of designs were completely new ideas.

I swear, it seems like ever since you got caught red handed stealing Walmazan's design you have been desperately trying to seek your revenge. Whether that is the case or not remains unknown, but it sure seems that way to me.

As I have said many times before here, great minds can and will think alike. Copycat in a cat derby is not a stretch... how else would you draw a copycat pun so that almost anyone can immediately get the joke?

Re: COPYCAT

This thread got interesting fast. First we have ramy calling out someone for stealing ideas (LAFF didn't see you complaining when you stole Drakxxx's and Crescent's Red Riding Hood idea among many others) and then some impassioned sarcasm from Crescent.

I'd say it's pretty clear that the unwritten derby rules don't matter and are only applied for no names and designs that won't print anyway. I'm not sure the bolded rules really matter that much either because even they have been broken with nary a rejection in sight.

I agree with Crescent that this is probably a case of independent origins of the same idea. But we also now have multiple shirts posted that have the same idea. For the shirt ramy posted, I believe that will fall under what I'm now calling the "Pluto Rule." As we saw this weekend, there are a ton of pluto left out shirts and many printed at woot but none of pluto being left out of a photo so it's ok.

Here we have the cat making real copies of itself not more cats so no problem (added to the fact that the other shirt didn't print). The Teefury design is problematic because it is the exact same shirt. My bet is that this is still not rejected because that shirt isn't for sale any more.

Re: COPYCAT

I originally made a long comment here, but I decided to cut it down because people probably won't bother reading the whole thing anyway. Like I said earlier, I have no problems with this design itself, I was simply surprised at the response that he has never seen this idea done before. As someone pointed out above, Walmazan even commented on the design I linked- there is no ambiguity here. No need for snarky or evasive remarks, this isn't really something to argue about.

The shirt I linked didn't even print, so it has no bearing on possible rejection. The teefury shirt, on the other hand, may pose an issue considering it is basically the exact same idea and execution.

ramyb wrote:Like I said earlier, I have no problems with this design itself, I was simply surprised at the response that he has never seen this idea done before (as someone pointed out above, he even commented on the design I linked- there is no ambiguity here). I must have forgotten that I'm not allowed to make comments of that nature.

This is just one of many times that people find ways to justify to themselves that the same situation with different people is entirely different. It's not. Sometimes, people come up with ideas that have been done, and that's it. If you have a problem with it sometimes, don't find ways to explain it away others.

Also, to address your comment chump, I wouldn't go so far as to say I'm a huge fan of walmazan's designs, but I certainly do like his style when he is on his game and have bought a fair number of his shirts (I believe I own 4 of them so far). That said, I don't think it is inappropriate to bring it up when a design is nearly identical to one I've seen. Think what you want about me and my designs, that has no bearing on the matter at hand.

This is a cute design and the idea is a good one. A good one that has been done, exactly as shown here, before. That's the bottom line, and whether you like the design or not, you can't argue that the teefury design is not precisely the same. Different style, yes. But there is nothing that has been added to the idea, and that shirt has been printed. This seems like a very black-and-white situation to me, and the fact that people are choosing to make snarky comments and being generally evasive is (honestly not) surprising to me.

People will always make exceptions when it comes to their favorite artists, and thats fine. I have seen it happen with my designs too. I have had designs (rightfully) rejected that were met with an outcry. It sucks when you fall in love with a design and it gets rejected, no matter the circumstances. It especially sucks for the artist when a similar design that he/she has never seen has been printed elsewhere. But ultimately, if you know the rules of the derby, you shouldn't be surprised or offended, even when it happens to someone you really like.

(That said, I still doubt that this design will be rejected. I know how these things worked, and I stepped onto territory where I wasn't welcome. That's fine, I'll see myself out for now. But I'm sort of like those annoying people who weren't invited to the party but might sneak up and jump the fence at any point again :P)

Ramy, you are the last one to comment in this situation whether this design's been done before or not. You have been called out more than any other artist on this site about you "borrowing" ideas left and right and woot not blinking an eye. I find it comedic gold to come in here and see you making snarky and back-handed comments on this design alledging theft by Walzaman. Its quite precious and ridiculous.

As to differences, style first off. second the images being reproduced are different as if the cat is having fun making funny faces. That adds a layer to the design that the 2 other designs referenced do not have. in other words this design has personalilty and soul. the others do not. those reasons alone make this design quite different in my opinion. Walzaman is great at giving his characters a personality which many artists here do lack in their designs, including myself and love to learn more from his work and appreciate his designs each week.

If you felt this design needed to be reported you have every right to tattle on it but at the same time posting the comments you have seems the pot calling the kettle black and shows a side of you which is not endearing like your designs.

Walmazan- my words have been twisted enough now that my original message is lost- I hope that you will at least read what I have to say here, because I have no problem with you or your designs at all.

Like I've said several times now, this design is well executed and looks great- I just had a problem with you saying you hadn't seen this idea before, when I know you saw radiomode's entry in the letter C derby. Thinking back on it, I shouldn't have said anything. It is obviously possible you forgot about having seen that entry before, and that's fine. It was a long time ago, we all make mistakes.

All of us try to come up with appealing t-shirt designs that people will enjoy each week. When you are designing for shirts, it is very easy to run into similar ideas, and with the number of different designers and shirt sites out there, it is nearly impossible to see every single one before you post. Sometimes it is just the concept that's similar. Others, like in this case, the execution is similar as well. Woot will make the final decision, and my comments will have nothing to do with it.

I don't think you have ever had a similar shirts exist rejection before in all your time on woot. I don't know if this week will be the first, but either way, it is a reflection on your work as a whole. You have a consistent and recognizeable style, and are able to make old ideas into your own. This particular one is too close for my tastes, but others obviously disagree. To each their own, and best of luck to you regardless of what happens.

To some of you others in this thread (you know who you are)- If you want to pretend to care about the rules of the derby, at least be consistent with your claims. Like I said before, snarky and evasive comments won't accomplish, whether you want to address the issues that were mentioned or not. The rejection notice doesn't say "same shirt exists," it says "similar shirts exist." If you want to tell me that the designs aren't similar, you might need to get your eyes checked. I realized that it was probably a bad PR move to bring this up at all, especially given the power of Walmazan's name, but I have been making an effort to be more active recently on the forums and didn't think my comments were unwarranted or unfair. This thread is just another crystal clear example of double standards on woot (and I mean within the community, not the staff).

While the use of the tattle button is nice, waiting for woot's Monday rejections quietly sitting on one's hands has for hypocrisy sake never EVER been the woot communities strong point. =/ Ponders the group of comments in this thread... it's like opposite day.

I also found at least 2 other similar shirts OTHER than the woot one or the teefury one which I remembered but couldn't locate. This one was at Snoorgtees:

To be honest, Walmazan does get the benefit of the doubt from me. He has earned it by proving he is a respectable artist time and time again. In your argument, it was never a question of "similar shirt exists;" it was more of "I think you stole this design." You made an accusation against Walmazan, and now you are trying to play the victim!?! If he had a continuing history of "questionable" designs like this, then yes, I'm sure we would treat him no differently than you. Bottom line is it is not a double standard; we would have to let Walmazan slide on like 900 "questionable" designs before that was possible.

Collectively, I have more shirts by Walmazan than by any other artist (14 solo, 4 collabs, 3 GJ, 1 TF, 1 TL), so indeed, I have some bias in this.

That said, I firmly believe it's not Radiomode's previous entry but the TeeFury shirt that is the basis of the rejection. TENSO Graphics has had works printed here at Woot too.

Whether it is an unfortunate case of coincidence or indeed an influence from past designs, we will never know. The bottom line is that it's not the first time a well-executed design has been rejected for the SSE rule, and around here, it won't be the last.

I sent in my comments to Woot by 'tattling' on another 'SSE' but in case those goes unseen, I'll say it here.

There needs to be a level of consistency with rules.

As with every week, I check honourable mentions. Among them this week is Ochopika's "...This Isn't Working" design which happened to bypass the 'Reason for Rejection: Similar Concepts Exist' rule that I've noticed.

Walmazan's "Copycat" was rejected by this reason. Similar concept? Sure. Same execution? Not by a long shot. His design far surpasses the examples that were displayed above as similar - but with differences (placement of cat, photos of cute faces vs butt pics, the addition of personality where others lack).

I say all of the above, because Ochopika displays very much the same quality of original work, and yet "...This Isn't Working" is VERY similar to this design: http://www.threadless.com/product/439/Ambition_Killed_The_Cat/ ...and *wasn't* rejected.

Ochopika's is better, but then, Walmazan's similar concept is better as well.

NOTE: Example used was only that, an example. No accusation. Both artists have my respect.

My point? If rules are to be established, they need to follow suit with the rest, otherwise it looks unfair.

Personally, I believe Walmazan's "Copycat" rejection is unjust.

This is incredibly disappointing. While this concept has indeed been done before, I agree with everyone that it was certainly a different execution. However, what may have not been entered in the calculations is new woot-ers (like myself) and those who do not follow other t-shirt sites (also like myself) who were itching to buy this design if it printed because they could not buy any of the previous "similar" shirts. Now, with no chance of it being printed, you have certainly lost my dollars.

As disappointed as I am about this rejection, my guess is woot it trying to not "play favorites" by not rejecting a SSE from a favorite artist. There's still hope for an HM... it would not be the first time a rejected shirt got one.

Re: COPYCAT

Although I understand why this got rejected, I am saddened. I wanted to wear this shirt until it fell apart.

This is the only shirt I really wanted this derby, wanted enough to spend the money on.

Please submit it somewhere else.

Try teemagnet.com it has links to many shirt sites, though the prices will vary - so pay attention to that.

sarahthebibliophile wrote:um... similar shirts almost always exist. I spend a silly amount of money on woot shirts and other items and am pretty annoyed with the fact that they seem to have arbitrarily applied this rule. As others have pointed out there doesnt seem to be any uniformity.

I think I am going on Woot-Strike.

Walmazan - I sincerely hope this shirt prints elsewhere as I will definitely buy one.

It almost seems that when an Idea has a plethora of similar shirts woot shrugs and lets it by, but if there are only a hand full it gets rejected. I suppose when there are a hundred versions already there also wont be any chance of a lawsuit. But it does seem annoyingly inconsistent.

You won't remember every image you see. Though I'm sure Walz did know that there would be similar designs on this subject. After all it is an old saying, and the internet is made of cats

One of the derby's many many rules is that woot does not want the submitted shirt designs to be TOO similar to an existing shirt. If there is a shirt with the same concept, execution, or joke, the design runs the risk of getting rejected. This is determined by the woot staff... otherwise known as the great and powerful REJECTIONATORRRR.

Of course to throw a wrench into the idea that this rule is consistent: the person or persons acting as the rectionator may not always be the same, also some designs seem similar but have new elements, or are drawn in an interesting new way, or use an old joke slightly differently, or sometimes woot doesn't get around to rejecting shirts until quite late, or even in some cases NEVER due to some complications we never hear about.

This can be quite disheartening to a lot of people regardless of how the axe falls on the designs. Whether one wishes the 4 designs with the pocket cats, of which there are MANY many examples of previous shirts existing, would actually be rejected(I'm looking at you woot) or that this shirt, Copy Cat, that had two examples of existing shirts to compare to wasn't rejected; the rules are still up to woot's discretion as to how to and when to enforce. Much to many people's dismay.

Sometimes no one notices and shirts sneak by(there are a ton of examples in this derby right now, just sneaking on by) but than sometimes everyone notices and woot STILL lets the shirt pass on by, and then for a change of pace sometimes shirts get mercilessly rejected even if they aren't that similar at all. It's a toss up. Basically it's suggested that artists check to see if someone has done the idea as a shirt before you make it for the derby. Google is your friend.

Re: COPYCAT

Similar shirts exist? The execution of the idea is nowhere near the same (tee fury v. walmazan). Bad call woot. I'll be looking for this design to print elsewhere too!

I am sad this one got the boot I loved the design and such. From what I can see of others similar to it, they are very dissimilar compared to others in this derby that are getting by. Ah well I guess that's the nature of this beast. I just hope it's not all star wars shirt's that win. :/

Re: COPYCAT

I am a cat person and I try not to buy cat shirts because it advertises me as a "cat lady". I would definitely buy this shirt. I hope it can be resubmitted in a later derby.
