It is a song written specifically for the movie, unless he's referencing a different poem, in which case, which poem?

I feel like from a distance, this is just going to look like a certain ... umm, bodily fluid splattered across the chest. No thanks.

Songs are just poems that you sing.

Yes, you can refer to a song as poetry, though a song is much more than "just" a poem that you sing. And I don't see any other entries based on song lyrics. I think the judges wanted poems that exist as poetry in a truer sense, but I will leave it to them to decide.

BTW, lest you think I'm a "hater," I happen to really like the shirt this artist has up for sale today.

Read the thread to see what poem this was for and still don't have an answer. Anyone? Makes it seem like a rather generic design that could have been submitted to any number of derbies.

That's kinda his thing.. :P

Staff, (or Ramyb, if you'd care to answer), I'd also like to know what (genuine) poem this shirt represents. If it's from the Willie Wonka song, it should be disqualified. That song was written specifically for the movie. Despite what some misinformed web sites may say, Roald Dahl did not write it, and it wasn't in his books. It was never published as poetry. There is poetry, and there are song lyrics, and while the two are intertwined, they are not the same.

So, in other words, this shirt should be considered pop culture then?

that was fun while it lasted!

Those are definitely other words.

If this is from the Willy Wonka song, then it should first be disqualified for being a song which, despite arguments to the contrary, is not the same as a poem.

I think it walks a line, pop-culture-wise. The song is from a piece of popular culture but the art is not.

Ramyb could have easily reposted this with another title--it's vague enough--or posted proof that these words come from a poem and not a song. He did neither. If the judges let this through, I'll be disappointed.

That being said, further research shows a bunch of folks disputing it, despite it appearing on multiple sites.....

I agree that a song can be poetic, and a poem can by lyrical, but it doesn't change the fact that this was written as a song. "Pure Imagination" is from the original movie "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory". The words and music are credited to Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley.

If that's even the work this design is based upon. A question that hasn't been answered.

Calm the heck down everyone. It's a poem, and a person above provided a link saying the poem is by Roald Dahl. So it is.

That's how it works? So, I can write that my cat poops rainbows, and it'd be true because it was on the Internet? Everything you find on the Internet isn't true. Someone posted that Dahl wrote the lyrics, and someone else copied it. Watch the movie. They were written by Anthony Newley. They were written as a song. And Dahl hated the movie.

Oh, and for record, Marilyn Manson is not the kid from Wonder Years, you won't win a free trip to Disney World by forwarding an e-mail from Bill Gates, and you're never going to get any money from the Nigerian government.

And with that, I'm on vacation, and this isn't worth the trouble. Believe what you want to believe, but you're wrong, and there's obviously nothing I can say to change anyone's mind.

But one final thing. Look at this.
It's the songbook for Willy Wonka (the movie). It clearly states the music AND lyrics are by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse.

Re: Pure Imagination

It may not be what the artist had in mind, but the poem that I think of seeing this is by Emily rose budinson (if preview is any indication, her name is going to be edited, but you can probably figure out who I mean):
"There is no frigate like a book
To take us lands away..."
One of my favorites. I'd have liked to see some tees designed specifically for that poem (if only I had artistic talent I'd attempt one myself), but this gives the same general idea and is also beautiful.
