Re: The View

This is a truly beautiful landscape; did you try it on navy blue?

I tried! For some reason, didn't seem to fit good with the green on the hills :/

WOW!! What an outstanding design! Really hope the lateness of the entry doesn't negatively affect it. Anyway, plus 1 from me.

That is a couple photos put together with an overlay color layer. Isn't there a "No photos" rule?

Actually, is done with a mix of brushes in photoshop, then turned into line halftones.

That's what I was thinking too :/

And unfortunately, showing halftone details doesn't make it any less likely that these are photos.

I really hate being a tattle, but I also want other shirts to get a fair shake:

Re: The View

Well, I used a brush for the mountain (as I said), then turned into halftones and colored it myself. I guess the brush it's made for that picture/wallpaper (as you can see, my design is not that picture in its entirety). It's the use of brushes prohibited? If that's the case, I have no problem at all with my design being rejected.

It is a good shirt, and you no doubt put a lot of time into this design. Unfortunately, Woot has a no photograph policy because it is difficult to determine who the rightful owner of the image is. I'm assuming that you didn't take that photo, and if Woot printed the shirt, they (and you) could get in trouble with whoever did.
A very recent example is the Shepard Fairey "Hope" poster, in which he redrew a photo owned by the Associated Press and got sued by them.

Had you taken the photo, it wouldn't be an issue legally, but Woot still wouldn't allow it.
I think that all decent artists draw from references, and I need them all the time, but its important not to pass someone else's work as your own.

I really don't like being a tattle, and I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, but I'm not sure where the rejectionator is on this one, and I would like for some of the other designs get a chance in the new hottness.

Re: The View

Depending on the brush license, it may be illegal to use it in this type of media anyway. (For profit.) Most brush artists give instructions to link back to them if used. (Or other instructions.) Unless you bought the brush set. In which they still probably are breaking the law using someone else's photograph. If you didn't buy the brushes, you could be sued if the brush maker found you, AND you could be sued by the photographer if it ever got printed. (As could Woot be sued.)

I hope that makes sense?

you're being entirely too nice. designer straight up lied when asked if a photo was used. this makes me sad.

lol, I suppose you could have made a brush out of the whole picture and used that, right?

I was wondering how quickly you found that image, but then after a quick google image search, I found that the image is already used on a book cover http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/natures-keepers-bill-birchard/1102645799 . I'm guessing, that makes the situation one more layer of sticky.

Arinesart - while I love what you put together here, I wish you'd kept the photo as reference material and changed things up more, making the mountains completely your own.

At this point in the derby it's pretty clear this won't print, but nonetheless it's unfortunate to not see the rejectionator around as it lends some credence to these sort of antics.

There are no rejections at all this week actually, and I'm sure there are others that should have been axed too. Maybe it has to do with the sponsor? What was the last sponsored derby, was it DEVO? I think that one had rejections.. hrmm..
