Re: Dedication
woops forgot to include a palette, but this design is 6 colours with 30lpi halftones!
Rejected because: Nice, but we can't run this, too close to existing characters and trademarks

Re: Dedication
People find ways to get mario and star wars into every derby, but at least this one is really well done. Good job.

The artwork is very well done but I don't think of how-to books when I think of getting "lost in a book". Or, how reading a book on plumbing makes one imagine any of the Mario video games. Sure he's a plumber but that's about it.

Looks great! Voted for it!
Re: Dedication
Slightly mixed feelings: I really, really love this design; I'd absolutely buy it and I'd wear it with glee. However, it doesn't seem to fit the theme of this Derby... So you get my vote, Colin, and I'll buy it if it prints, but you also get a tiny slap on the wrist via comment. ![]()
Re: Dedication
Cute design -- I like the little stuffed koopa :-D

I have to say I must politely disagree with you here! Mostly because that was the politest slap on the wrist ever, I feel like I should thank your hand for slapping me? It's weird. Haha, sure a lot of us wouldn't imagine a how-to book being a book we get lost in, but the whole idea behind this design, as I tried to convey through the title and the smaller details, is here is a kid whose staying inside on a nice day, ignoring all these toys that most would love to play with, all to keep learning about his passion. He's dedicated, he reads that book day in and day out. Sure the topic seems random and boring to us, but to this kid it's what interests him most, no one said he has to be lost in a fantasy book, or sci-fi, that just doesn't grab this guy the same way learning about pipes does!
When I was little I used to always get lost in non-fiction, such as facts on dinosaurs or how-to-draw books, the whole idea of being "lost in a book" I think really comes down to what truly interests you, to the point where you can't put it down.
That's my opinion at least! So hopefully that makes my wrist slap a bit more gentle? Lol Thanks for the kind words, everyone!
That looks like my little boy... wearing his Mario hat.. nose deep in the Mario Coin Counting Guide... I agree you can get lost in a non-fiction book!
It looks really good. Great job.
See, Mario did learn about plumbing, and apparently it has something to do with battling magikoopa

I like your explanation, and I sympathize with it completely. I get lost in reading all sorts of technical information. I can't help myself sometimes, I just love soaking up knowledge.
The funny thing is though, when I read others questioning it and before I read your explanation, I actually thought of literally getting lost in a book. Like when you're trying to work on something you don't know a whole lot about yet, and you've got a big book of information that you're trying to navigate through, simultaneously trying to learn how to use the book AND learn how to fix the thing you're working on. I've gotten lost in this manner countless times. Everybody's gotta start somewhere. ![]()

I think this a very good example of what this derby is looking for! Here a child Mario is getting lost in a book that is likely a hobby. While reading, he starts to daydream about what it would be like when he's all grown up...naturally, the items he is most familiar with (his toys) come along for the ride. And, thus, all the video games we have enjoyed are really just a daydream in the mind of an absorbed child.
Nicely done...

Wow.. seems totally unfair.. I was planning on buying 2 of these. Woot prints Mario shirts all the time, so why not this one?
