I apologize, I meant gradients with the background as in having the background fade out into the shirt color rather than having solid edges. Not specifically gradients inside the background. :3
Like, the flat works great for the characters in this instance. But the background doesn't need to be so blocky/solid.

Yeah, I created a series of halftoned backgrounds, but it just didn't look right. It kept fighting with the manner in which I stylized the characters.
In the pursuit of different backgrounds I made a few different decisions. My wife helped me to finalize a few colors.

Oh, the background on this is much improved, it's not fighting with the characters like the other one was! It really gives an impression of an elegant evening dance too. The olive shirt clashes a little with the new color scheme though, it might be better on a different color... Royal? Gray? Cranberry? Brown? Navy? (Navy might be the wrong hue, and too dark) Hmm, a puzzle, I can't put my finger on it.

Yeah, if I had a couple weeks for revisions we could probably work all this out. But as the derby is, I'm already too late.

I agree, I think this new background really makes the whole design pop. I loved the first one and this is even better!
