Re: Taking Flight - Tribute to Leonardo DaVinci

Last one for this derby. Taking Flight - A tribute to Leonardo DaVinci. This design was inspired by several of DaVinci's Invention Sketches for Flying Machines. His Bat-Winged Glider, Helicopter and Parachute are all incorporated into this design. For instance, the single arm of the bat-winged glider makes up the "netting" seen on the woman's head. It also makes up the wing of the bird sitting closest to her. Two of these side by side make up the bottom portion of the butterfly in the background of the design. The larger wings are from the actual glider sketch. DaVinci's helicopter sits atop the woman's head as a hat. The woman in the design is from DaVinci's painting "The Virgin on the Rocks".

Meant to comment, earlier - I would looooove this in a brighter color, but it's a beautiful re-imagining of his work and gmv.

Hi Hotcha- I actually thought about this a lot before reworking his sketches and trying to come up with the best way to express my ideas with limited colors. One thing I wanted to do was try to capture the softness of a DaVinci Portrait and the antique quality of an old master's painting. I wanted to stay with the natural darkening of hues that you see in the old paintings. Plus, I wanted to try to keep the antique quality of his sketches...the dark brown and cream seemed to work with the sepia tones that you see in his sketches. I thought about a brown or khaki background, but since my other two DaVinci designs are on brown, I didn't want all 3 to be the same background.

I just couldn't visualize this design on a red, blue or green background. (Navy might work?) If you don't mind me asking, what color would you have liked to see. The asphalt with dark brown and cream seemed natural to me, but if you look at my paintings, you'll know that I'm a huge fan of rustic shades. PM your color choices, or post them here...maybe I can rework a custom one for you.

It's funny because from the stuff you PM'd me, you have no problem using those brighter colors, but I do associate your derby designs with olive, brown and asphalt. So I don't know, really, I would have liked to see more of the design "pop" just because it's so...very cool. Either with more contrast from a brighter shirt, or from a brighter design. But it's great as is, honestly, because the work is so well done.

You're right. The ones that I've submitted as dailies to woot have been on bright colors, but my derby ones have been more on the natural side. I hadn't thought about that. Now, you've set me up to try to incorporate the two! I'm going to play around with your ideas and see what happens. Maybe I'm in for a surprise. I'll try to do something bright like the one I PMd you or like the koi on DBH and see what happens. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised. Always love the challenge! Thanks for your encouragement!

I love this. Not just for the Leonardo design, but b/c Hudson Hawk is one of my favorite movies. If I wore it, nobody'd make that connection but my dad and I... so I need two!

Excuse me. I must speak to the dolphins now!

Thank you so much! I never saw Hudson Hawk. I had to look it up to understand the connection, but from a brief synopsis of the movie, I think I see the connection. A shirt that works for you AND your dad. That's perfect!

Thank you Attila!! There was a lot of movement with the entries last night. I'm overjoyed to be in 6th. It's bittersweet though because I had to pass a few of my favorites to make it into 6th. (Patch and Edgar, I adore your entries!)

Thanks again Attila. Glad you like it.

Thanks! I'm really trying. It's actually been a great change from working with brushes on canvas. And, I think the graphic work online might even be influencing my paintings. That's kind of fun. (Someone ask if my Koi design on DBH was available as a painting. Sold two koi pieces as a result!)

Then coming on here and seeing people voting for Taking Flight" has really made my day. Thanks everybody! I really appreciate it!

I have to agree here! For sheer design, this is one of the best entries I've seen in this derby, and in recent times. It looks like a lot of the modern t-shirt design that I see people weaing out and about. Well done!

Re: Taking Flight - Tribute to Leonardo DaVinci

I really like this design, the colors, the layout, all very pleasing. Only one small thing. the thin wire frame in the background should be pushed into the background even more, possibly fade the color. I think it competes too much with the main design. Still, a great shirt and it's getting the props it deserves.

Thanks Everyone. I was almost afraid to check this morning. I can't believe it's only Monday. There's still way too much time left. But I'll continue with my big silly grin at least for now.

@Dekonstruct-Thank you for the kind words and the critique. Nice coming from a 2-time winner with great design skills. I believe that the thinner frame in the background will disappear into the shirt much more than the rest of the design when viewed by the average passerby to the tshirt. I think this is a design where the viewer will be drawn to the image as a whole and then start breaking it down into its DaVinci-related parts.

@JBedWar - No bashing the Toaster. I love that one!

@Caspianta - Wow! Haven't seen you in the forums for awhile? Hope everything's okay! Here's a link to an image that can help you with the details. After drawing the bat-winged gliders used in the background of the larger image I used the single-wing and created the netting in the woman's hair by overlapping the wings. i drew the bird and then used one of the bat-wings to add a winglike detail to the bird. Hope this helps. I'll get a picture of the little parachuting man too. He's really cute!

Thanks DRoller and Dagith. I appreciate the support. Hotcha and Fable are firing up their engines, so Taking Flight will need a little momentum I suspect. Votes please!

As for placement, I thought about doing it centered and have the parachuting man and birds off to the shoulder. I was afraid that this might be outside of the printable area and face the rejection stamp. So, to play it safe, I went a little lower and let the "flight" take off from the bottom up. I wanted it low enough that a woman's topography wouldn't alter the image too much.

I love my tshirt from Killopo (Summer Breeze) i think. And I figured a similar placement would be nice for this design.

Thanks again for the support. I really do appreciate it!

Thanks Alex (and Derek!) I definitely appreciate the comments especially from a trained designer. (I should be thanking you for not entering this week as you are certainly a derby contender!)

Off to get dinner ready. Thanks again everyone. I'm so excited to be in the fog!

Fable and Derek - I'm rooting for you to have one of the Editor's choice selections tonight. I'd love to see one from Edgar or one from Duneboo too...I think that was the designer's name. Heck...I'd also like to see the Pucker around the world get printed. That was Kenney's best one (imho)! Good luck guys!!!

I think my placement is higher than 289's tree design. Plus, I used the entire 16x20 space, so the overall picture is much bigger than the tree image from the winter derby. I made sure to put the bulk of the image above what I'd call the 'scrunch line'....maybe the lowest butterfly wingtip might get slightly scrunched, but I think the rest of the image is going to lay very nicely across the shirt.

Thank you to everyone for your support this week. It's means more than I can tell you! Best of luck to all the foggers and the nearby contenders. It's going to be an exciting 24 hours. I'm so nervous I can hardly type!
