I will take that as a compliment because that shirt is sweet. The colors are similar, but a little brighter. Maybe that designer and I are soul mates!

At any rate, thanks for the vote! Keep 'em coming ya'll.

Then you have to allow every other entry, no matter how unrelated to the topic, because you can technically dream about anything. Those people that have theirs rejected because it's not dream related are going to be pretty peeved when/if this one is allowed through. I have to wonder how many people would be supporting it as on-topic if it wasn't for the Cheesesandwich name on it. If it was some new person you'd never heard of, do you really think it would have so many saying it's on topic? I really do like the shirt, I just think it should have been a daily.

Edit: Just saw the first wave of rejections, looks like they are being pretty forgiving on what's on-topic.

If you are going to do shirt based on the Eurythmics song, something more related to the lyrics in the song would have been appropriate. Or better yet, maybe something more demented from Marilyn Manson's version. I have been trying to buy a Shirt.Woot Derby shirt for months now and it's ugly shirts like this one that keep me from buying.

I just don't get it. Why would anybody want to wear this shirt? The only thing clever about it is the title. Take away the name and all you have is cupcakes on a branch. How is that related to dreams? I feel that there are other designs out there that better convey the given theme.

The fact that you think Marilyn Manson is "better yet" than Annie Lennox means you're wrong. Especially since the lyrics are identical, meaning the image wouldn't be more demented. The original song is demented enough.

But the point is that SWEET dreams. Are made of cupcakes. because cupcakes are sweet. Expand your mind, sir.

Regardless of your poor interpretation of music, I agree with the user who stated that this shirt does not convey the theme of this derby. The fact that I was responded to, most likely for my mention of Marilyn Manson, shows that you are no more opened minded than the average sheep.

Marilyn Manson is simply for a different sort of sheep. Annie Lennox has been pushing boundaries musically and conceptually for decades. Manson has been honing his shock factor without honing his musical skills. Now, to be fair, AC Superstar was a brilliant piece of anger, as was much of Portrait, but by and large, he's a marketeer. He knows what disillusioned teenage quasigoths want, and he gives it to them. He's selling to a very defined market, one which are sheeplike in their embracing anything that is marketed as "not being for sheep". You're defending a cover as being better than the original, and trying to attribute qualities to it that don't exist. Nothing about the latter version would give different inspiration for a design, unless you could make designs scream. It's like calling Limp Bizkit's "Faith" more inspirational than George Michael's original.

And it's cupcakes growing on a tree. Is this not something people may dream about? Would you be as averse to the same design with money in place of cupcakes?

On theme or not, I want this shirt. So everyone go vote for it.
This derby is pretty much impossible to determine on topic or not anyway. As long as the artist explains it, it's pretty much going to be on topic.
You can't really say "I'm sorry, you're dream's not valid."
Now I have to go buy some cupcakes.

I don't mind it when people create accounts for the soul purpose of bashing people, in fact, i rather enjoy that. What I do mind is that I am nothing but jovial and accepting of this kind of over-the-top rudeness, and yet it still comes. I know it's bound to happen, but it's kinda lame.

I never expect anyone to like my designs, woot or otherwise, so I don't consider this a fail. I always hope that people like some of the stuff I do and I strive to constantly be improving my skills. If either of those things is happening, I am a pretty happy camper.

Why are you so mad about this shirt? You are never going to like all the designs.

With the exception of a couple people I work with, I don't know anyone on woot. I have been submitting pretty consistently since the "BLANK is the new pirate" Derby, so I suppose I have conversed with people on here, but I don't think people just vote for their friends. Well it looks like his join date was back in November so you are wrong once again. I love how the sheeple of this thread have to be accepted by others to feel loved. If anything this shirt will win out of pity and you can go back to feeling all warm and fuzzy in your bed at night. Try to put a little more depth and imagination in your designs and maybe you won't have to put up with the bashing. Sounds like you are used to it anyway.

To all the other designers who managed to create way more imaginative designs, when your shirt doesn't win, this shirt and all of it's "followers" are the reason why.

How?

Contrived: adj. Obviously planned or calculated; not spontaneous or natural; labored: a novel with a contrived ending.

Outside of the fact that all designs are planned and calculated to some degree, please enlighten me as to how this one is more so.

For what it's worth, what you said was contrived in that every makeup-wearing woe-is-me fauxgoth worth their weight in clownwhite uses the term "sheeple" and tries to act as though everything they dislike is "part of the mindless masses". You drone on about nothing in the exact same way millions of deluded people do, acting as though your thoughts, identical as they are to so many people just like you, are somehow more unique than the masses, when it's really just a different form of herd mentality. If this shirt is contrived, tell us why. Surely if you're smart enough to break free of the herd, you're smart enough to articulate your feelings maturely and intelligently. While you're at it, perhaps tell us what you DO like. Or you can continue being a reactionary twit... you're so good at it, I'd hate to deprive you.

hohoho, i love it when people feel the need to define words. It's so original! zomg, i think i'll call you webster!

here is another definition for you;
con·trived /kənˈtraɪvd/ Pronunciation[kuhn-trahyvd]
–adjective
obviously planned or forced; artificial; strained.

in other words, this shirt looks like it was OVER planned. The linking of the "Sweet Dreams" song and this shirt was so strained that the outcome was a bit crap (but some people like crap and that's cool too).

anywho webster, as evident by your ramblings, it is quite obvious you've made this argument before. Is it possible you had your heart broken by a "fauxgoth" before? (great word by the way, i think i'll steal it!)

and you calling stevgtguy a reactionary twit is pretty hypocritical if i say so myself. What is it that you're doing at this very moment? OH YEAH, being a reactionary fauxgoth webster twit! If you ask me i just think you like arguing...but i can see through it! I know you just need a friend. Would you like that Adder...a friend?

1) You are correct regarding the "makeup-wearing woe-is-me fauxgoth". I am not one of these sissy little "my life is horrible" pricks.
2) Unlike how they use the term, I refer to sheeple as people who follow the norm rather than gather their own information and make their own informed decisions. Case in point is the current President of this once great country. Had everyone not followed the masses, maybe we could have gotten a more competent President.
3) Contrived can also mean artificial.
4) There are many other designs in this derby that better fit the theme. Cupcakes growing on a tree is nothing that anyone would dream about except for maybe a person the size of a small country. Here are two examples of shirts that imo fit the desired theme:

http://shirt.woot.com/Derby/Entry.aspx?id=9312

http://shirt.woot.com/Derby/Entry.aspx?id=9357

On the second shirt, another user, alboneus, made the same observation as I,

"More often than not the really good stuff gets passed over for more "popular", less shiny, boring shirts. Good luck."

I, unlike him, choose to stir up trouble because I like to get a reaction out of people. Also I think this shirt is homosexual. Unfortunately for me, any publicity is good publicity so their is no stopping this monstrosity from being in the top three. For those of us who actually enjoy wearing original imaginative woot shirts, we can only hope that it goes down in near miss history.

All politics aside, I am mainly disappointed in the woot community as a whole for voting for a shirt that does not quite fit the design theme. Obviously if this wasn't a reoccurring problem, woot would not have mentioned it at the beginning of this derby.

You seem to be taking "dreams" pretty literally as "what happens when you go to sleep." In that case, if I can dream of a non-existent monster, I can dream of cupcakes growing on trees. If cheese had put a bed under the cupcakes with a little dream bubble, would you be complaining it didn't fit the theme? People who dream of cupcakes on trees must be big fatties? Seriously? But people who dream of big scary monsters are, what, cooler than everyone else?

Your comments say, "I don't like this shirt so you're all a bunch of sheep for voting for it." This is an assumption that gets made time and again in these derbies...people who are voting for the top shirts to, I guess, get more popular with the crowd by casting their mostly anonymous vote? While many derby winners don't sell out these days, they do sell at least the number of votes they're getting, so the people who are voting for it are also following through with their wallets, not just their mouths. You sound like a petulant child who hasn't gotten his way, which is too bad, because you've actually got some interesting things to say.

I see your point. I follow through with my wallet on the designs that I like once they win, as I have bought a few Derby shirts recently. I could understand how a problem such as this would present itself in every Derby, it's just frustrating to see better designs lose out. It all comes down to people's perception, and no two people will perceive the same thing the same way.

Maybe woot should start a "Near Miss Derby" and all the 4th, 5th, & 6th place shirts could get made.

Nothing says "i'm a tool" more than random 'i hate bush' comments.

No one here mentioned Bush, the shirt has nothing to do with Bush, and, though Cheese did hold a position in Bush's cabinet as 'secretary of awesomeness', that was during his first term, so it's rather old hat.

Democracy tends to favor the masses, on woot as in American politics, that's just the way the concept of 'voting' works. We're glad that you're unhappy with it. It makes all of us feel better that you'd like to see more creepy black shirts that go well with shattered dreams and empty eyes. I think almost everyone feels that frustration every single, particularly the artists! Like you said, nobody perceives things the same way, and I have been utterly bewildered before by the voters too. It would be pretty cool if Woot did a Best Of derby quarterly like they did in December, to give non-winners a second chance.

The shirt doesn't have to be black to be "cool" and obviously you are a republican since my one sentence about Bush caused you to spew multiple paragraphs. And yes, the concept of voting does work, as evidenced by everything that has ever been voted on, but does that make the results right or correct?

Remember that forums serve a purpose so that people can voice their opinions. But since opinions are like ***holes and everybody has one, so everyone gets a say! Regardless of whether or not you agree with me, I still caused you to take time out of your day to respond. That to me is the best part.

Two simple points.

1) You mentioned Mr. Bush. Good on you, he's a twit and I can't wait for next January when he's finally at the mercy of history. However, er, completely unrelated to this derby. Especially because

2) You stated that "I think this shirt is homosexual". Which implies you think homosexual equals bad. Which is pretty much exactly what a good chunk of the "sheeple" who voted for the man in point 1 believe.

I don't think cupcakes growing on trees is some sort of impossible concept for someone to dream about, and I'd argue that if it is NOT a dream without the title, than the Fable design you cited isn't either. Without the title, it's just little robocopters kidnapping little guys. Where's the dream? Nowhere, by your logic.

We're all upset when something inexplicable reaches the upper echelons of the derby, but most of the people who frequent the boards can articulate our reasoning. You have proven an inability to do so. You think the shirt is homosexual, read bad, and that's the be all and end all. That, and you like being reactionary. You want to lash out at "unoriginal, unimaginative" shirts in the fog? What about the penguin with wings? I've never seen a shirt with cupcakes growing from a branch, but I've seen about 100 flying penguins. Or what about the clipart extravaganza which will probably take first... how is that more original?

Re: Sweet Dreams Are Made of These...

Well, I just got home from work and read through the copious amounts of comments on my shirt page. All I can really say is... "WOW!" I always expect people to say negative things in the forum... some constructive and some not. What I am surprised at is when somebody (anybody) takes their dislike for a particular shirt, and turns it in to an opportunity to insult someone (or an entire forum of people) personally.

I really and truly respect the fact that everyone has an opinion and the right to share it, but throwing around put-downs and insults is not really expressing an opinion, it's just unnecessary. When I don't like shirts, I just don't vote for them I may offer constructive criticism (mostly when asked), but I do not lash out and question/judge/insult the designer's skills, physique, political views, sexual orientation or otherwise. I just don't get it.

It's a shirt with cupcakes growing from a tree, it's brightly colored, it's supposed to be fun and/or funny. It shouldn't be the center of a rage filled debate. At the end of the derby, either people voted for it or they didn't, none of this back and forth will really matter.

I am always pleased and grateful to win or be printed (this week would be no exception), but if it doesn't happen I am fine with that. I always just figure it means that not enough people liked the shirt, nothing personal, just didn't like it. That said, it's nice to see as many positive posts and notes as negative ones. It probably all balances out in the end!

wow. I haven't seen so much hate over a shirt since cheese's very cool owl was losing out to pensketch's very cool hourglass.

But what I don't understand is why people get so bent out of shape over whether a design fits the derby theme or not (in their view). when you wear said shirt, will everyone looking at it think 'wow, that must have been made for a dreams derby, how cool' or will they be thinking 'wow, those are some awesome looking cupcakes... great, now I'm hungry'?

FWIW, you got my vote. Even though looking at cupcakes I can't eat anymore would be a horrible sort of torture. (Maybe I could pretend they are gluten free cupcakes, mmmmm).

Congrats to the other contenders on a pretty tough competition this week. We shall see what happens tomorrow. GOOD LUCK TO ALL!
