True, but the context is quite clear. And any evocation of emergency contraception just reinforces the theme of disappointment and resignation. Props on the team effort! GMV.

That was what I thought of first, too: Living the morning after pill?

A winged fog entry. Wow, I predicted this... if you allow the wheel = watch. The font is really nice and drippy.

well i've never heard of that morning after pill, nor do i think the grand majority of people reading this will come to that conclusion. having a kid at 20? yeah i lived plan B big time. go fable. gmv, as usual.

That is all i saw upon seeing the design "Plan B" = morning after pill. Have fun explaining that to your local activist christian

Snap.
nice design, fable.
IMHO, the font for PLAN B should have been just a little thicker. right now, the difference in thickness between the font sizes is a little too much for me.
good luck in the derby!

I think you're right. I noticed that when I got back from my doc's appointment. It was actually a 5px brush, and my own handwriting. I think 7px would probably be a good fit.

*giggles*, I love it! Definitely will buy when it goes on sale. Not sure if resorting to Plan B is quitting though, just changing tack. I'd like to think I haven't quit altogether even though I'm on plan D already. ![]()
Hey Fable- Happy to see you with an early entry into the fog. A little sad to see that you had to add the clock and wings to make it 'fly' with the voters. I miss the cute details I'm used to seeing on a Fable entry, but you definitely deserve to be in the fog.
Hope you can sustain the momentum through next week! GMV!
Re: Plan B
good to see clip art is the key to getting fogged now. eesh.
I'm about ready to take a well-paying job in a field I have almost no interest in over what I'd really love to do for the rest of my life, so this shirt might actually be appropriate for me
brizz wrote:good to see clip art is the key to getting fogged now. eesh.
It is a t-shirt design contest - not a drawing contest. Plan B doesn't do it for me (no offense), but some of the clip art shirts turn out great.
It is all about designing a shirt that people will vote for (and hopefully buy).
Seriously - too many haters.
Edit: Also wanted to add that there are some awesome hand-drawn entries too. Great range of styles from cartoon to sketch to just plain funny.
amach06 wrote:Everone knows thats not what the intent was.
Not the intent, but that's the first thing I thought of when I saw the shirt, and the Plan B in red ... the design is beautiful, I just find it disturbing.
Re: Plan B
So... thanks for the support and critiques! To elaborate a bit...
Yes, I did use clip art and text. I said I would (...and you all thought I was kidding!). It just works into the theme this week. Here's my rationale:
The theme is about quitting, and my shirt is about moving on to Plan B. My personal Plan A of submitting quality artwork entries wasn't working, so I quit and went on to Plan B. Since I was losing to clipart and text, I figured, "if you can't beat them, join them - and then beat them at their own game." ;) The concept is also mocking the typical, rockstar-esque dream, so I wanted to use the typical rockstar-esque design. Hand drawn art looked too freelance-ish, so I went for cookie cutter art. It was much faster AND I got to work on other artwork.
All in all... I was just going with the theme. ;)
...and I had no idea there was a contraceptive called Plan B. Although, even if I did, I would have done this anyway. To me, and many people on most occasions, Plan B usually means the alternate plan. I can see how recent events would make people think of the contraceptive though. Just a fun, twisted aspect of the design I guess. =D

Art is cleared to be printed, right?
Also, I'd buy this if you incorporated 6 more pieces of clip art. Make sure they vary in color only slightly.

supporting abortion and a woman's right to choose does not mean advertising on your chest you had an abortion, by the morning after pill or other means. as I said, I know it wasn't the intent of the shirt, I'm not stupid, I get it, but the first thing I saw when I saw the design is why would you be advertising that you gave up your dream to use the morning after pill.

This is all a little silly. Plan B as an idea far outdates the drug, the name of which was obviously based on the idea. The concept of the drug in context of this shirt doesn't even make any sense. If your dream was to be child-free, taking Plan B is part of "living the dream" and if you dreamed of having a child, you wouldn't be taking Plan B.
Absolutely Cool. I want this. In fact I have many people I want to buy this for.

You know what else the rest of the world has heard of? The term "plan B" outside of the context of birth control. Seriously, no one is going to think birth control first, Size Comparison Diagram wasn't covered in penises, no one saw a swastika on Feed the Whale, and Cat Carrier isn't WWII Era Japanese Propaganda. If you're old enough to have a credit card and buy shirts, think about being old enough to mature past grade school logic.

Perhaps we travel in different circles, but since it's the first thing *I* thought when I saw the design, I am sure others do too. And of course, others will have no idea and take it for how it's intended. I found the design disturbing and said so. Isn't that what this area is for, to comment on the designs?

I am curious though, if you don't mind me asking... If you look at the design on whole, all of the contextual evidence supports the idea that Plan B refers to the alternate plan. There's nothing really feminine about the design, and nothing that would imply it's about contraceptive methods. Is it the title that leads your eyes to Plan B first, and then the rest of the design? Is it the red that makes you look at the Plan B first?
Just wondering for future reference.

Hey, I'm not the one that thinks "Plan B" is some new thing, as opposed to a phrase that has existed for years before even condoms. I also still consider a "chaser" to be a drink which follows another drink, or possibly one who chases. Were there a shirt which said "Straight, no chaser", I would not presume it to mean "I'm not ebullient, and don't take hangover pills". But again, clearly I'm alone on that.

It's the PlanB in red I saw first with the sad face that made me think the morning after pill. I like the rest of the design; but then again I'm one of those who does like a lot of the clip art, wings, girly stuff that's so frowned upon by some here.

I don't think "Plan B" is something new. A "chaser" is a drink to follow another, and I don't see penises, swastikas or other such things in those designs you mentioned.

Guess I'm the only naive soul here who totally missed the Plan B morning after connection. I NEVER thought of that in reference to this design. I simply saw....Plan A: Live the American Dream. Oops...failed, move on to Plan B. The sad face meaning that he/she failed at first and now has to take the next best option.

so in other words, instead of trying to improve and hone your skills and create more original and satisfying work, you say eff it and fall back on tropes of unoriginality in pandering to the masses for the sake of a buck. great. The future of the derbies is not a bright one if this is the attitude here.
I agree the contraceptive pill stuff is sillly, but come on fable....just because walmart has cheaper prices doesn't mean you have to shop there and contribute to the evil empire.

FWIW, she's pretty effectively proving a point, and I'd rather see this in a derby about quitting than any other one. Granted, as I said elsewhere, I'm kinda hating how many designs this week are doing just this, but on the plus, I don't think we'll be seeing a new, cliparty Fable from now on. Or I hope not. That would make me cry.
Maybe, though, if we can get some clip-art nonsense to win three derbies in a row, woot will ban all unoriginal art wholesale?

do you really belive that Adder? As long as shirts sell, do they really care?
snarkygal wrote:do you really belive that Adder? As long as shirts sell, do they really care?
In my wildest dreams, I do.
To me, that was the point of doing Editor's Choice shirts... to show that woot cares about the shirts they're selling, not about how much they'll sell or whether the masses like them.
Woot has used thematic elements as limitations before. They have mocked their meme-voting base openly in descriptions. They seem honestly frustrated about some things that win, and I've seen rejections where the reason was "thank god, I can reject for text", or something of a similar idea. Woot wants to make money, sure, but I don't think they want to do so at the risk of "selling out" to any particular group. They've already been putting a halt on text just about every other derby, even though text entries seem to BLOW off the proverbial shelves. I would not be surprised if we start seeing derbies with "no clip-art" limitations.

Well, you almost got my intentions. Close enough I guess.
Derby theme: Quitters
So... I quit this week. It was for the sake of the design. I really couldn't have worked it better. No possible way I can think of.
Oh, and in regards to honing skills and original, satisfying work... I spent the time I saved by using clipart on OTHER artwork - the real kind. The other artwork required much more skill, was much more original, and much more satisfying than any of my derby entries have been. "Design" in general isn't always about the best artwork. Sometimes, the symbolism and message are much more important. Illustration is about the artwork. This time, it was about the message. In that sense, I'm glad you're upset. It means you agree with the frowny face in my design. =D

I guess the biggest issue i have with the design is that ultimately it doesn't fit the theme at all. Failing to reach your dreams and moving on to plan b is not quitting, it's perseverance. Perhaps laziness if you want to put a negative spin, but the simple message of moving on suggests the exact opposite of "quitting."
AdderXYU wrote:I would not be surprised if we start seeing derbies with "no clip-art" limitations.
The first "no text" limitation was set into place after I won for Coupons. I honestly expected a "no unoriginal art" limitation for this week...

If Plan A is to be a rock star and your girlfriend gets pregnant, you quit Plan A and go to Plan B, and get a real job. That was even built into the theme description: "No-hope, go-nowhere rock bands roar about how they're in it for life, when what they mean is, they're in it until they get their girlfriends pregnant and have to get real jobs." Perseverance is pursuing a goal no matter what the hardship. That would be getting the girlfriend pregnant, but still trying to go for the rock star Plan A dream anyway. Quitting isn't always negative. Sometimes, the smart thing to do is to quit Plan A. It's not necessarily the fun thing to do though.

Plan A and B aside, it's safe to say that quitting plan 9 is always the smart thing to do. Bela Lugosi's just going to die midway through.

You need to make at least 1 woot purchase before you can vote.
http://shirt.woot.com/WhatIsWoot.aspx#q7b:
Who can vote in the Derby?
Woot users who have previously made at least one purchase at any Woot site. See, we don't want people to create multiple accounts and stuff the ballot box. And we also want to make sure the winning designs are actually ones that our regular users would like to see. This restriction might seem anti-democratic, but voter fraud and prank voting are worse. And like we said - all you need to vote is one purchase on your account record, ever, at any Woot site. Even Bags O' Crap and LeakFrogs qualify.
Ransdell wrote:HOW THE HELL DO I VOTE FOR THIS SHIRT? WHERE IS THE VOTE BUTTON!? I know I'm a total newb at this, but help me out here.
You have to have purchased at least 1 item from any of the Woot stores, Woot.com shirt.woot, wine.woot, or sellout.woot
Until you purchase an item you are not eligible to vote on the Derby Entries.

First thing I thought was the birth control thing, shame too because this is a great idea. I'd of like to see the red text say "Backup plan" instead.
