The Latin on this shirt is incorrect. The author used an internet translator. I am a Latin scholar and know that "Diligo est Mortuus" means "To regard highly is dead." Diligo is a first person, singular verb. The true translation for "love is dead" is "Amor est mortuus." Wearing this shirt as is, would be an embarassment to Latin. Please change the translation!

shouldn't it really be "Amor mortuus est."? My memory of a lot of years of Latin is that in general we ended sentences with the verb, especially a straight statement like that one. granted, Latin was still a live language then, but still. ;^)

That is a good point. But still, Latin has very flexible word order, so if you wanted to emphasize the substantive adjective "mortuus" is may be placed at the end. The begining and end of the statement are the most emphatic. "Amor est Mortuus" and "Amor mortuus est" are equally correct, but have subtle differences in the emphasis that would be up to the author to decide upon. Thanks for the catch!

Totally correct on the word order comment, but it doesn't change the fact that the statement as it currently stands is completely wrong... hopefully no one ends up wearing a T-shirt that makes absolutely no sense.

The Latin is incorrect. It doesn't really matter the word order since the conjugations are what allow for proper translation but since the entire thing makes no sense, this shirt should not win unless it is changed and resubmitted.

I agree with all of you about this, it can go in any order, but it usually ended with the verb. If it were a poem on the wall in Pompeii, or something, they might change the order in trying to make a rhyme, but usually, it ended in the verb.
Regardless, there is probably a two word declarative that would work even better, much like Cave Canem, for "Beware of the dog"

Not that any of this has anything to do with whether the shirt is going to hang in there in the fog. ;^)

Paradoxically, I love the execution of this shirt. However, I really can't vote for it unless the Latin is corrected. Too many people I know would recognize this as a pretty bad mistranslation. But again, I love the idea. Change it, and I have some friends who'd like it too!

Perhaps I would, but my real world skills, such as grammar and ability to research another language in order to adequately translate into it, are far more important to me than the success of my designs.

In the defense of the designer, I looked up Diligo in my Latin book. It does mean esteem or love. So he/she really isn't that far off base. I do think amor would be the better word to use here.

I don't think I'll stay in the fog, a lot of great designs are gaining on my, but I'm going to fix the text (Amor est mortus) and send an updated art file to woot. I don't know if they'll accept it, but it's worth a try. Thanks Dana, and all the others who helped with the Latin. Who new woot had such a scholarly audience.

Although Diligo does mean "to esteem" it is a verb...verbs don't take adjectives....just thought I'd throw that out there.

And I'm in agreement with Fable, Rob... definitely talk to Woot, see if you can change it up. I don't back down from feeling it's way too hot topic, but what really kills it, to me, is the Latin... Amor Mortuus Est would actually probably be the best wording, but Est Mortuus should be fine as well.

Not that I'm entirely sure what Love being Dead has to do with quitting.

Damn you beat me to it. Except diligo est mortuus is pretty much untranslatable. "to regard highy is dead" would be diligere est mortuus, if you had to write it, and it could also mean "to love is dead." Are you sure you're a latin scholar? I minored in latin in college (five semesters) and I wouldn't call myself a scholar in latin.

Oh they're right . Latin can pretty much go in any order for the most part. There are some common scenarios where it does matter, but in this case it doesn't. Usually you will see it at the end of a sentence though.

I know my opinion probably doesn't count for much, but I think "Amor" is the best option, if only because it's clearer what is being said... most people would be able to hazard a guess at what "Amor Mortuus Est" (or Est Mortuus) would mean, yet would not be familiar with Diligo, or its root.

Also, I'd suggest emailing Woot sooner than Tuesday, just to ask if such a change would be kosher. That way, if they veto the change, you don't have to worry about what wording to use, or fixing the design to reflect that wording.

I agree with the previous comment except to add that "Amor Mortuus Est" and "Amor Est Mortuus" are basically identical in meaning, except that the second one (with the adjective, mortuus, coming second) adds slightly more emphasis on the concept of "dead." In Latin you can use just about any word order that you want, although verb last is most standard. That being said, you can choose between those two statements, realizing that the first is more "proper" and second is more emphatic.

Yeah, you're right on that one...the infinitive would be only thing to make it even close to sensical. I was trying to not nitpick on the incorrect statement for the sake of average readers, but rather be accurate on the corrected statement. But thanks for correcting me anyways, I suppose. And calling myself a Latin scholar is simply a way of saying that I have a scholarly love/interest init, not that I believe I should get a medal or anything.

I hope everyone realizes altering shirts once they 'won' is an effort on our part to sell the best possible shirt. I'll tire at the inevitable moaning about this in the future.

On the 70s shirt, I think some people bought it BECAUSE of the mistake with the apostrophe. It almost had a cult following by the time it was printed in the 'best of' derby.'

If you wanted the "To love is dead" in Latin i think it would be something like:
"amare mortuus est." Not really sure since I took Latin 3 years ago.

To "quit" simply means to stop - but as used here we are meaning rather "to stop when there is still a chance of success". Obviously Love isn't - and never will be - "dead" so if you give up on Love you are giving up when success is still possible. Those who vow they shall never woo again are quitters.
