Re: KTHNXBAI!!!1
Ha ha, does this imply God is a pc user (the 'x' is on the other side for macs right?)
In any case, pretty darn creative my friend. this derby is not turning out to be the bland catastrophy I envisioned.

You know, I'd figure god was a command line type of being, but that just doesn't fly as well visually. I thought macs had the red circle on the top right... oh well.
yeah this derby is going to be very tough.

I think God would go for the CTRL-ALT-DEL combination...
Re: KTHNXBAI!!!1
I really like the color, the absence of the horizon (can't really think of a good word for "earth-circle"), the sizing and positioning. Good luck!
Re: KTHNXBAI!!!1
Thanks everyone! I guess it's the quick and dirty things that do well on these derbys. Let's hope god is a ctrl+alt+del kind of person, at least that gives us a little time to watch the shutdown
Re: KTHNXBAI!!!1
Great design, love the color too. Hope you make the fog.
Re: KTHNXBAI!!!1
deep. the way i see it is human's inevitable shutting down of earth. like killing it.
w/e the case its got my vote
Re: KTHNXBAI!!!1
Mine heart-strings have been plucked!. I just laughed so damn hard I got soda in my lungs and all over my monitor... Bravo.
Re: KTHNXBAI!!!1
love it
this is rather uninspired. not surprising to see it in the fog.
Re: KTHNXBAI!!!1
clever
Re: KTHNXBAI!!!1
*giggles* tee-hees!. nice one.
Re: KTHNXBAI!!!1
Got my vote. Very nice.
I like this shirt, and I like the colors... actually, I like everything about it. But forgive me for being rather noobish... what does KTHNXBAI mean? Or is it just supposed to show aggravation?
"Ok, thanks, bye." used to end a conversation. at least, that's what the urban dictionary told me.
I find this highly inspired.
I love it. Makes quite a statement. I will buy when at least one if it wins!
Re: KTHNXBAI!!!1
I wubble this shirt. Quiting is one thing but the idea that the earth has gotten so bad that it is time to hit the close button is so pessimistic that it almost makes me angry. Even Vonnegut jr. had a more positive outlook than "just giving up". Looks like I'm one of the few dissenters though. Oh Well.

I'm with you 68goats. I still do not see the desire to wear this shirt.
But apparently a lot of people do. So congrats to dekon (who's shirts i normally like)
Re: KTHNXBAI!!!1
Looks like I seem to have hit a chord with the people, and this was more of an experiment for me. Don't worry, I'm not done making obscenely cute and slightly twisted t-shirts.
PS- I love Vonnegut, and it depends on which point in his life you're refer to when mentioning he has a more positive outlook than this t-shirt. The last book he wrote was chock full of pessimism and disdain.
What would pushing the "quit" button on earth do anyway? Would it shake up and down like an etch-a-sketch?

I think Vonnegut definitely straddles the line. There are times he's ever hopeful, and there are times that that hope is based on a rather large calamity occurring to get rid of a large chunk of particularly dumb humans. Such as us evolving into penguin creatures with smaller brains.

I like this....I like this alot....nice job Dekon

Galapagos, one of the best books ever! "Vonnegut straddles", now there's a perfect word combination.

"dude, you got Vonnegut straddles? I never get any lovin' by reading Faulkner!"
And well you shouldn't. Faulkner sucked.
dekonstruct wrote:What would pushing the "quit" button on earth do anyway? Would it shake up and down like an etch-a-sketch?
It would probably just disappear. And then God would call Tech Support and say "I accidentally clicked the X button and the Earth disappeared. Make it come back." And Tech Support would say, "we can't do anything to bring it back, you'll have to start over." After some gnashing of teeth, swearing, and threats, God would angrily hang up the phone (after refusing to pay charges, of course) and get to work!

The Vonnegut lap dance is simultaneously the best thing that's ever happened to you, and the most depressing event of your entire life... C'est la vie
God has a tech support team? Now I'm scared.

It's like Boku-Maru, except with a side of world crushing cynicism.
And I believe you meant "so it goes".
Re: KTHNXBAI!!!1
Great idea, I love it. It made me think of God's Final Message to His Creation. Which is, of course, we apologize for the inconvenience.

Y'all are a bunch of well read people. I love it!
and yeah, I did mean "so it goes".

I prefer the final message from the intelligent beings..
So long and thanks for all the fish.

Clearly, the dolphins saw this shirt coming... that's why they left
I think the idea of this shirt is clever, but rather artlessly executed
Re: KTHNXBAI!!!1
Aberrantic you're going to have to be a little more specific as to why this shirt is not artfully executed. If you mean there are no frills then you have arrived at the point of this design. It's minimal enough to show only what needs to be shown, to me that's what made it work.
minimalism, gestalt, Bauhaus, all valid "art" movements no matter how big a game they talked were still relevant and artful.

Exactly. I think this is great! It makes you fill in the details on your own.

Hmm, I suppose it is the simplicity that kills it for me... An Earth, a mouse, an 'x.' It's a bumper sticker image, not art. I guess, if i may make an analogy of sorts, it's not art to me the way AlvinPing's dream shirt was art to me. Although he took clipart pictures, he modified and creatively overlapped them in a way that made them different from the stock images, whereas this, if you did make any changes, I'm afraid I can't see them. Like I said, I do think this is a clever idea, and the idea works, but the execution does not work for me as a shirt. I hope that wasn't too confused an explanation

So if I'm understanding you correctly, you wish there were more "frills", more design elements. Basically, you're not into minimalism, that's fine to each his own. But realize that the entirety of the shirt was thought out. All of it was "changed" as you describe it (I would rather call it "created") There were three different versions that had to die for me to arrive at this, and it was my belief that anything "extra" added to this shirt, actually detracted from this shirt.
My neo-baroque, rococo phase ended when I left college, not so say AlvinPing's shirt wasn't good in it's own way, but the message got lost in the details for me. We can both be good artists sitting on opposite sides of the spectrum and still chat at the pub. It's just pictures after all right?
I also believe that a bumper sticker has it's place as a piece of art. Do not tell me what "art" is, tell me what you like about "art". Lumping things into the "art" "not art" piles like that is elitism, the very enemy of creativity.

I guess I am saying that more "frills," as you say, would be better, although I'm not sure if I would like that any more. I guess it just comes down to personal opinion, and mine is that, while, clever, this is bare, simplified, and artless. But that's just me, and clearly there are plenty who disagree. I'm ok with that.
I believe that is the greater scope, lumping things into "art" "not art" piles does inhibit creativity, but individually, it can actually be very helpful in dismissing avenues that the artist feels are uninspiring. For my art, one of those avenues was technology. Other people have made extraordinary pieces using images of technology, but within my own work and what I prefer, it is simple for me to dismiss designs like that immediately, as it holds no interest or possibility of exploration for me. But again, that is a personal choice. One man's art is another man's trash, and vice versa.
When I saw "bumper sticker" I mean that the idea is somewhat shallow, a clever quip that goes no deeper than the surface. To me, true art is multi-faceted, with subtle overtones that speak of greater meaning. That is not to say that other things cannot be art, just that they don't seem great to me. Damn, there goes that personal opinion again. Of course, this is a shirt, not an art contest, so I suppose this whole discussion is somewhat invalid anyways. Hey, good luck.
Oh man, I just realised I'm bipolar about art. Crud.

err... yeah. about that. I don't think I'll be doing much of that anymore, since it really doesn't come out well on fabric.
Glad you liked it tho, at least it looks great on a monitor! ![]()

Hey, just means you're on the road to recovery ;)
Pretty much all art discussions boil down to the points we've made. It's all relative, and it's the differences that keep it fun. It's an ageless fight methinks, and I guess it can't be avoided. Art is art is art is art is art is art is art... and yet there really isn't ever going to be a clear definition of art.
I'm willing to bet there are ways of making t-shirts fit the so called "High" forms of art. Perhaps hand crafted, wood block printed, dyed, stitched, molded, and wired for sound... who knows. I'm just some dude at a dead end job trying to make something fun.
It's nice to have these talks though, good luck to you as well.
