“Dear sun, you would not be able to hear the honking of an oncoming bus, if you would just shroud your ears with both of us!”

Breaking news. It seems as though the sun has been struck by a bus after leaving work just moments ago. We have here the driver of the bus:

"Well, when I saw him step into the road, I started blarin' my horn, 'loud as I could, but he didn't seem to notice! He just kept on walking...there was nothing I could do...it was too late..."

Off-topic to the shirt, but this comment just brought to my attention that a standard and relatively neutral word for orientation has been ponied here.

It can be used hurtfully, but let's be clear: the comment above is exactly as hurtful with or without the word substitution. The word pony is the neutral word preferred by most major media style guides. If straight isn't blocked, pony shouldn't be either.

Yup. My 15-and-a-half-month-old, 25 pound baby wears the K4 size. They are a little wide on her and are certainly too long, but she isn't swimming in them. She sleeps in them and occasionally wears them around in public, proudly proclaiming things like, "BOOKS - NO ELECTRICITY REQUIRED." And yes, she really does love books.

That said, I'd order up. I'm fairly certain that by the time she's 4, K4 will be relegated to a box (or worn by an as-of-yet-nonexistent younger sibling?).

This is something I've thought long and hard about, but it does boil down to people being more likely to use it with poor intentions on the internet. We do filter straight on and off as well, depending on it being used in sales, etc.

I assure you no disrespect is intended when filtering the word. Would you rather we left it untouched, or we tripped up people using it negatively? The hope is to make hatemongers look/feel as absurd as they are. (That's a serious question, by the way -- I'd love your feedback.)

Yes, they do.
My DD is about 35 pounds and I put her in a K-8 and she has some room to grow (you do want this to last a bit). Order 2 sizes up.

Hilariously, I missed the substitution on this one earlier because there's an infamously trashy pony bar in Seattle called Pony. It doesn't even have a name on the sign, just a picture of a white horse on a black background.

... I wonder if they sell teeshirts.

Thanks, Gatz!

I do get that there's a tricky balance there. I'd personally prefer that the neutral word be left unfiltered, with the understanding that it might take a little more moderation work.

Filtering it leaves the implication that it's a "bad word." I'd rather not be identified as a bad word more than I can help it.

I'd posit that "internet people" who use the word negatively will circumvent the filter, anyway.

Thats a cute shirt. I would say probably more for kids or a pajama shirt, though.

Then we take the appropriate action for hate speech AND circumventing the filter. =) Method to our madness!

If it helps, we do filter plenty of other words just to mess with people. Profanity and hate speech do get filtered, but a lot of them are just for fun and to pester people. Try typing h-e-h without the dashes, for example. =)

We constantly re-evaluate our filters and will definitely take your feedback into consideration on the next iteration.

How did you feel when they were filtering the word 'tree'?

Some times the filter is just to mess with people's heads. Like the time they filtered 'the'.

And from reading further in the thread: hyuk :P

Uh,ok,I got very confused by the rainbow/pony discussion ( how and why is now beside the point) so after looking up every euphemism for "pony" that I could think of I looked up,"pony people "and it was quite an eye-opener.....

That does help, as does your thoughtful response. As an alternative to unfiltering it, and in the spirit of Woot's delightful word substitution policy, here's a second proposal: choose some word more distinctive than "pony" so people can actually tell what the subject of discussion is if they're trying to, for example, mention a pony bar, and then use exactly the same substitution for straight.
