This list is gonna get loooooong as the side sales continue.

Thanks for posting this, Narfcake. What I find interesting is noting how much sales have increased across the board over the years (and how long shirts would linger as a result). Several years ago it could take a shirt a year or more to reach 8-10K in sales. Now we have 6K sell-outs on debut day, and one shirt even made it to the 10K mark in under two weeks (The Cheese is a Liederkranz, if you're wondering). Shirt.woot has definitely gained popularity!

Thanks for putting all of this together!

The things that really stand out for me so far are how few fertilizer The Shortcut sold. It's of decidedly higher quality than most of the those around it.

Anyone doubting the power of cute need look no further than A Shameless Plug. It was Fresh Cake five months prior to Fresh Cake being Fresh Cake, but the lack of a cutesy baked good (even considering the actual pun) left it at 26th worst ever as compared to 16th best. One thing I wonder about the rarities. I know that the "Some motivation required" duffel bag sold out on about the second day of the sale because I was debating buying it. When I finally decided to go for it they were gone, and I checked back several times to see if more were available. So, less than 500 sold, but truly sold out. (I don't know of anything else that this happened to, though.) Doesn't change the fact that it's rare, but in this one case the sales were actually limited to available quantity. Does that change the context of the rarities list at all- i.e., not just sold low numbers of product, but also possibly low quantity available?

Not sure if I'm getting my thoughts across, here. Think I need to post this and ponder it some more....

Some portion of the 12,400 shirt difference is probably due to the text you're right. Some portion is due to the sloppy line style. But be realistic. I know it's cool to pretend that the woot buyer is a deep, contemplative animal with refined taste, but we all know the truth is much simpler.

A good design, like a Shakespearean play, appeals to multiple "levels" of perceived taste.

Related to that thought, but also for my own curiosity I went through and roughly categorized the top sellers and they break down sort of like this. I split the pop culture into geeky math shirts (periodic tables, equations, etc.), IP shirts (creations of other people i.e. Batman, Star Wars, etc.), and Memes (pirates, ninjas, demotivational posters, etc.). We then have the cutesy shirts and several that are difficult to characterize. Many pop culture could fit in cute or geek as well, but I did not double count.

Geek: 5
IP: 15
Memes: 9
Cute: 8
Uncharacterized: 6

The cute and the uncharacterized shirts I would classify and being original designs that don't rely on external ideas for sales. The pop culture designs obviously are taking advantage of popular franchizes/objects/ideas. So that puts us at:

Original: 14
Not-original: 29

For those curious here are the ones I didn't put in a category and where they might go:

Apathy Coalition: could be a meme but the derby was about propaganda posters so I didn't feel that it was fair

Fat Unicorn: It could be a cute shirt though I don't find it terribly cute nor do I feel that it is appealing because it is cute

Squeeze: Again argument could be made that it's a cute shirt, though it would be tenuous I think.

Donut Panic: It's frightened food, and probably should fit in the memes category but it's a derby meme not really global so the average buyer wouldn't be exposed to that so I didn't count it (cute too I guess)

Music is Life: I suppose you could make an argument that it geeky because of the ipod, and it definitely fits into the swirly category, but in its defense ramy and seki created that here so for the most part I'd say it stands on its own.

Kitchen Warfare: Can't think of any real place to put this. Making bigger designs out of smaller related items is kind of a thing in the shirt world but there's no real precedent for this particular one unless you want to count iron chef or other cooking shows like that. I don't.

Oh, nice job with splitting the rare shirts from the side sales.

I may get a rare shirt this reckoning. I want rare one but I also want something I'd actually wear. This appears to be combining nicely this week, though I do feel bad for the artist.

There is no rhyme or reason to my shirt purchases although I will admit a weakness for penguins (and purple which is of no use to woot). I'd say I was otherwise immune to cutsy animal types but I may have been suckered into buying a shirt because I was watching a fish try to swim out of the danger zone. I swear, if it had been drawn in the other direction...

Those numbers from up stream show 268 Rares to 28 Non-rares, one of which was a 3-Pack of AAs. So with 90% hitting rare, i think we need a number shift.

We have 100 Rares, and are in Derby 252, So that's at least 1764 shirts. Let's call that round number around 5%. Applying this to the side sale we get 5% at 17, round up to 20.

20 or less sounds good for side sale rarity.

Although I should, of course, have thought to check the rest of the thread for that information, I think it also (in a way) demonstrates my point: the list of Special Event rarities is currently too long to be of any "utility" or, really, any interest: my eyes glaze over when I try to read it. Moreover, although Narfcake was able to link me to the list of "special event" rarities, I think most of the items that sold more than 500 units were from "special events" instead of the weekly (now twice-weekly) side sales. Excluding the warehouse fire sale, Valentine Cards and Shakespeare A-Z Tote are the only two that I recall being part of the new side sales.

That seems a little low to me. Among other factors, it seems like there's a consistent pattern of some types of items (e.g., posters) not selling as well as others (e.g., aprons); it seems like there might be a different threshold for different types of items. Choose an arbitrary percentage of stuff that should fall into the rarity category, and then, based on the aforementioned percentage, calculate the cut-off number of sales.

Updated again, as the numbers are back! Unstealthiest Ninja moves up a couple spots from side sales with the help of Unstealthiest Ninja 3: Back to Ninja School, as Nevermore gets ever closer to the 50k mark and The Binge gets closer to the 60k mark.

One new entry has been added to the rari-tees list.

The special event (side sales/Woot Plus) numbers have NOT been updated since 5/26/2012, as the redesigned pages currently do NOT show the sold quantities. Likewise, those designs in which a special item was sold too would NOT be represented in the favorites grand total.

I remember wanting What Kitty? when it was sold, but I had just bought Fat Unicorn and PolarSnugglePhant so I held off. PolarSnugglePhant is maybe the only one I bought with the intention of wearing it to bed. Usually that's reserved for randoms that I wouldn't wear outside. I think my rarest shirt is Plump Horse, which was also my first Woot shirt. It sold 704.

I got a Painted with Water poster that I still haven't framed to hang up yet. When I do, my living room artwork will consist of that, my framed cmdixon 4x6 prints, and my framed Air tee.

The hate may not turn it into housewarming (which I think was just too late in the season iirc). Even the candy one this week is nearing 500 sales. What was the arbitrary cutoff for rare?

Well, housewarming gifts sold 94 on its debut day, so it's a close race.
The petulant woot kids want whatever boring poo they voted for. The demographic hasn't changed enough to boost sales. I don't think the new derby rules are having the intended effect yet.

I'd been rooting for you to escape the Rariteest Award, but if you want it, I hope no one else buys Russian Nesting Doll. As for high rage/low sales - I feel like we used to have high rage/high sales, and the former has been restored even as the latter... has not.
