I love the colors and the feel you've created. And Firefly is probably the best short-lived TV series ever. (M*A*S*H and Seinfeld all-time best series).

But placement-wise, it looks like my crotch is going to be on fire.

And not in a good way.

Silintli - much thanks at your much needed comment. I have been getting a bit discouraged with the lack of votes during the past few derbies, as well as not too much feedback on how to improve a design.

I even entered this design in the derby discussion thread ahead of time per someone's suggestion, but got no response on how to improve it or anyone's opinion(while people in the same thread gave opinions on the 'known' designers pre-designs, that already get tons of response in or out of that thread!). So... that was really quite frustrating.

In other words, good timing - I appreciate you saying that!

Vote!

Re: Inspired by The Amazing Race

I think it's clever and I actually feel like the shirt is whimsical enough that you can let some anatomy slide. However, I agree with the criticism of the stump-legs on some animals and the more detailed feet on others - it would make sense if the stump-legged critters were farther away and thus less detailed, but that doesn't seem to be the case here. Keeping a consistent style throughout the design would help.

My other nitpick is that the dog looks a lot like a fox without a fox's tail. It would've been nice if he looked a bit more like a proper dog.

Okay, so to address a few things.

One, you're really not going to appreciate the shirt if you hate cute animals AND don't know what the Chinese zodiac is. I accept that. Sorry for you guys.

Two, I agonized over what style to make this design. A lot of you think that drawing this cute animal style is easier than doing it in a more artistic style, but it's not. It's easier for me to do the animals in an artistic style because the coloring is much easier (since the drawing stands more on its own when you're limited to 6 colors) - for example, tgentry's Sun Wu Kong shirt was artistic and just one color. Can you imagine how dumb cute animals would look colored like that?

Anyway, my point is that I wanted to do a cute animal side design, but I considered a different style at several points, including at the beginning and also when I was 3/4th done with the picture and the colors weren't working out. In the end, I like the design and I'm glad that some of you can appreciate the colors and layout, even if you dislike cute animals.

Three, I am getting sick of cute animals too. This may be good news or no news, because one, I don't consider my elephant design from last week to be a cute animal entry, I consider it a visually pleasing picture with some cute elements. I also am not sick of cute staplers or cute cheez-its, for example. :p But if this image were not of the Chinese zodiac, then I wouldn't really care for it much (as it is, I love China. ) Honestly, because people complain about cute animals so much, I almost feel obligated to do them so people don't start complaining I'm selling out.

But anyway, four, I won't be doing a cute animal next week. This isn't to appease anyone, it's just a fact that I want you to know now so you can get on my case less until it happens. Haha. I wish. ;)

@ eHalcyon - Some of my long post is relevant to yours. Anyway, of course the rooster is going to catch up! Look at how hard it's struggling. :D Also these are magical animals that grow to arbitrary sizes determined by how they fit into the picture. >_> And the ox is running daintily in order to not upset the mouse and its mai tai, but it's so awesome that it's going to get first anyway (OR SO IT THINKS.) :D

I wonder if the halftones would print well.. anyway, this looks really nice, and I love the placement. (I like unique placements though...) If this prints, I might be in for one. (The only thing is, please make it as big on the bottom of the shirt as possible!)

itsbeth wrote:I usually don't jump on the 'ripping on ramy' bandwagon, but come on dude, you're doing semi-realistic big cats again and yet they have the same jank anatomy people brought up last time that you said you'd work on. Lions and tigers don't have long forelimbs like that and that's one heck of a big leopard if he's the exact same size as the lion. It wouldn't be so obvious if you'd at least switched up the poses.

*sigh*

The concerns that were brought up last time were that the body became very thin towards the back, that the hind limbs were strangely short, and that the tiger was in a hyena stance. I tried my best to adjust these things in this design (you can compare if you want)- and while they may not be perfectly realistic in proportion, I tried my best to adjust them as much as I could (and did two versions of the picture because I was unsatisfied with the first).

Honestly, I didn't have any expectations for this design, and while it's actually doing better than I had anticipated, it's by no means on track to hit the fog. I just did this design for my own amusement, as a thunder follows lightning and therefore thundercats follow lightning, without a particular intention of it doing well.

The main problem for me is that, when I have an idea that I think is amusing on some level, I want to do it in a style that I think is visually amusing as well. Unfortunately, the style is getting less amusing over time as I use it more and more, and I can understand why you are all upset about it. While they may look exactly the same as everything else I've ever done, my entries the past two weeks were actually an attempt to adapt the style to be a bit different (larger animals, smaller eyes), but to no avail. I can't tell you that this is the last animal picture that you'll see from me, because it's not, but I'll at least try to change something, and also do them much less often. We'll just have to see how it goes.

paulkremer wrote:I have to be honest radiomode, I usually love your work. I own 2 of your shirts, The Music Industry is one of my favorites of all time.

But this one makes me sad. It's one thing to have a blatant Mario ripoff where it fits, but quite another to FORCE a Mario ripoff TO fit the theme. I'm starting to see more and more designers use blatant references to pop culture for no other reason than specifically to use it, and it's getting old.

I realize the point of this is to get printed and get paid, but tossing aside the cleverness and creativeness I know you have inside of you for attempts like this make me sad. I hope that your future designs are ones that represent actual creativity, because those are the ones I like.
