Well I like the limitations but it's hard for me to imagine any decent shirts coming out of the theme.

This theme is psychedelic. Dude.

Meh.. this can be one of those hit or miss kinda derbies. Maybe it's just me, because I'm not really into sports.

As a sports fan and a sci fi fan, I love this derby idea!

This theme is... overtly specific.

does it have to be soccer? or can i make up my own sport?

Make up your own sport.... none of us knows what the Galactic Cup is, so it could be anything. I am sure it is something spacey... or not.. i dunno.

However, I've got a fantastic idea for Mega Bad Minton. I want to have a rocket powered shuttlecock with lasers shooting out of it. It could be really sweet.

Please, please PLEASE tell me this isn't a soccer-only space derby.

Upon closer inspection of the derby requirements, it does appear that the W00t staff was requesting soccer/football related designs only. I do like your idea though!

I think alien sports could result in some fun designs since you can riff on anything.

It seems clear though that Woot is truly asking for alien SOCCER which is so limiting that I can't see much coming out of that...

Er...really? I'm not a big fan of these overly-specific derbies. I like the wider themes more, where you have some wiggle room. There's also less opportunity of seeing the same idea being repeated in several designs with a more open derby. *sigh*

Well, if they stick to that, then plan on a lot of soccer balls turning into comets after some alien does the backflip kick.

Which will be cool once. But after 30 of them or so it'll get a bit tired.

Sounds unfortunately like they're limiting the subject to soccer. Ugh. How boring.

On a side note: I wonder if shirt.woot has ever considered having a shirt theme contest? They could run it concurrently with the shirt contest.

Just have a contest where artists can come up with their own contest themes. We could submit artwork that could inspire the contest. You'd have the same fog, just like with the shirts. We'd only know who came in first, second and third by seeing what the contests were every Thursday for three weeks.

If there was a Woot theme contest, you could be darned sure "space soccer" wouldn't fog.

Maybe the winner just gets a small cash prize, or a gift certificate for Woot or something.

I think that falls to us to interpret and them to not reject our interpretation. Anyways, for the record, I am NOT limiting myself to normal soccer rules and in turn soccer itself.

Why not give them one of each of the top three designs from the derby that uses the winning theme?

This whole theme feels like one of the totally random rules, all glossed up and wearing heels.

Except WAY less fabulous.

Can we make a pact to all submit the same design? How about a bunny and penguin in space suits, with a soccer ball between them. One bunny is intersted in the ball, the other is disinterested, disgusted, surprised, etc.

This is the idea I had, I need to work on the sticks. I can't decide on placement, full center or pocket?

Well, it sort of depends on who you are talking about when you say "unwearable". I think the demographics among the artists here are generally more women and less jock-y than the typical consumer on Woot.com.

So while the designers here may not be as excited to design for sports, the typical Woot.com customer may like the idea of a sport-themed shirt much more.
