Staff

You may have noticed today's Shirt.Woot offering is a little different than the usual designs you'd see here. "What's the deal with the color of that shirt?" you may have said to yourself. It's a special day in Shirt.Woot history, as we're celebrating our 200th Derby AND announcing that we've chosen today to release two, count 'em, TWO brand new shirt colors for our Shirt.Woot designers with which to go nuts. Say hello to Silver and Slate!

We think it's going to give you guys some cool new color options and an alternative to all the navy/black in your wardrobe while maintaining the darker, more distinguished look you seem to prefer. What does this mean for you? A few things:

  • First up, if you're a Shirt.Woot designer you'll want to download our updated Artist Templates (available in either Illustrator, PDF, or PhotoShop).

  • Second, it means we'll be saying farewell to two colors in order to make room. Heather Gray and Orange will no longer be options for Derby and Daily submissions. We know, it's sad to see old friends go. However, we reserve the right to throw something on them again just for fun if the mood ever strikes or a design is just screaming for it.

  • Lastly, designs currently for sale (or in the Derby this week) that use Heather Gray or Orange will continue to be printed on those colors for as long as they stick around. We won't be suddenly switching It Came Out of Nowhere to silver or The Cake is a Liar to red.

So there you have it! Two new colors! A super cool shirt for sale right now utilizing one of said colors! Let us know how excited you are in the comments!

awesome! hopefully derby 300 sees lemon and creme, swapped for purple and mint.

WHERE'S THE PURPLE!?!?!?!?! *cries*

also... That means they'll never bring back Oh Burned as a classic if they ditch the orange. That makes me sad.

Hahahaha you beat me to it, Jadenkale! I was just about to bemoan the lack of purple. But, silver and slate are also great :D. Wooo!

I don't see the need for a swap, just add 'em! The more the merrier.

Even though it's the single most hated shirt color on Woot, I'm sad to see Heather Grey go. In the right hands, it can be a really superb shirt color. Some of my all-time favorite shirts have been on heather grey (Flying, Robot Zombie Vampires from Space, Final Approach).

Nice to see the additional (non-heather) shades of gray. I love all my Asphalt shirts, but it will be great to have a little more gray-variety with Silver and Slate.

But losing orange is saddening on its own. We've had great orange tees in the past.

I think that leaves open the possibility, at least.

happy for silver; but I actually (yes, it's true and I am willing to admit it) like orange and heather grey...

It has to do with cost, and probably a color phase out, most likely. Besides, keeping more and more colors on hand could hurt their sales.

Yeah, I didn't notice til just a moment ago that they replaced heather and orange. I rather liked both of those colors, but they're usually tough on the crowd. :\

I will admit to being bummed. Greys are fine every now and then, but it sucks to lose two of my favorite blank colors for it. I'd always hoped that if colors switched, it would be in favor of something a bit bolder and more unusual (though I suppose many would also view those colors as more difficult to work with).

Still, it's neat to see any big change, even if it's one I'm not personally fond of Keep switching things up, Woot!

Thank you, thank you and good riddance to heather gray. There have been so many designs that I loved but I just couldn't stand the heather gray.

I am pysched about silver and slate! Though, what will Hallowoot be without orange??

I also fail to see the reason for the swap. I suppose woot's warehouses may be packed full with stock that they simply can't afford to have little used colors in stock as opposed to more popular ones.

What I really find fault with is adding two gray scale options. Do we really need that many different ways to put something on gray? I wouldn't want a purple shirt or some of the other colors but they make a hell of a lot more sense than slate.

What I would have really liked to see is creme disappear for some of the many alternatives like natural, sand, nude or tan that are infinitely better looking.

Awww man, do we really need 3 shades of gray? Wouldn't 2 shades of gray and a purple be better? *pout*

I was hoping for AA eggplant. It's dark enough that guys would have no problem wearing it. Two new shades of gray is always useful though. I'm very sad to see heather gray go -- looking in my closet, it's probably the 2nd most common color I go for...

Have you noticed how there is usually an absurd number of gray shirts every week? I would say that's the reason for having several different shades. It doesn't seem like a very good reason, especially when you look at how much of a difference there isn't, but who can fathom the mind of woot?

I was just thinking that tomorrow's theme will probably be "Silver" or "Gray"?

EDIT: Or "monochrome"?

I've noticed. Silver is a reasonable replacement for heather gray (though I like heather gray better). Slate is just a slightly lighter asphalt or a slightly darker silver whichever you prefer. Tweeners are never really useful. IT's not different enough from either to add anything. The only real benefit is for people who want a darkish gray shirt and dark ink. It'll be more visible than on asphalt.

That said, it really doesn't add anything to the repertoire. A new color would. Not everyone likes bold colors but for all that there are shirts that just look better on orange or yellow or red. People rarely use them, but that doesn't mean the option shouldn't be out there. Purple would add an entirely new dimension for some designers. Slate is a miniscule deviation from what we already have.

I do agree, a new light neutral color would have been so awesome. I like soft looking, earthy art, but cream is such a hard sell to the audience. :\ Maybe for the future we'll get some nude on in here.

Yeshhhhh! Good call woot. There have been enough times where I've designed something and thought "this needs to be on a lighter shirt... but no one likes baby blue"

FIVE of the fogged designs are on asphalt right now... more grays just makes sense.

Wooooo new shirt mock up/shirt template! I still like the photo shirt templates better but this one is much nicer.

Edit: I'd like to see some odd colors like purple, teal, a mid-level brown might be nice, and lord help me pink. LOL.

Also I'd really love it if we could get Sunshine instead of Lemon?

Anyway I'll pretty happy with some different greys.. and I'm glad they kept the greens they have.

I'm not sure I see how - unless woot is just buying a ton of blanks and having them sit around (rather than ordering them as needed for printing purposes), offering another ten colors shouldn't make a difference. And I can't imagine how it would change sales...

odysseyroc wrote:awesome! hopefully derby 300 sees lemon and creme, swapped for purple and mint.

Most my shirts are cream... not really by choice. I do love both lemon and cream. Purple and mint would be really nice. Personally, I would love to have turquoise too. It seems like one of the easiest overly saturated shirts to design for and looks good.

..oh just look at me. I'm a kid in a candy store now. give me and inch and I request a mile :P I am indeed satisfied with the new shirt colors, so I will just shut up!

I am also disappointed that what we basically got were two more shades of gray, though I do understand the reasons why. I have a lot of Woot and Threadless shirts, most of which are red, brown or orange. I would love to have more purple shirts but I guess I'm part of the minority. Gotta cater to the masses and they love black, grays, bunnies and penguins!

I didn't see we lost orange at first. that is a little sad, but I do kind of wish that it was more of a florescent orange or bright orange to begin with. Too many people confused it with red in derby entries. Though it was a little tinter in value, I don't know if designers really lost anything.

Slate is actually a wonderful color, in my opinion. It's close to Asphalt, but a little more friendly. Silver is actually much more like white, in that it's surprisingly light colored, but still nice. They're actually both pretty good colors.

I'm with you on purple though. Maybe mint. My preference would be a few more colors that differ as much as possible from other colors that are offered, so that there can be a bit of a larger range for artists to work with. Still, Slate is a great addition, and I'm somewhat fond of Silver. Orange itself is a great color, but I've always found the orange shirts to be not the friendliest shade of orange. I'm not too unhappy it's gone.

But I want "It Came Out of Nowhere!" to be on silver! The only reason I haven't bought it before now is because it's been on that awful heather gray.

Heather gray can be shockingly nice if the design is right. Even great designs though don't always make it work, but there are some where it's outstanding. My favorite example is Clefhanger. I got it in a random, because I thought it was a boring shirt at first. But in the end it's become easily one of my favorite woot shirts, if not my favorite. The design works perfectly on the gray, and even looks good on me (admittedly, heather gray tends to not be a flattering color). I can't describe what makes it work when other heather gray shirts fall short, but it does.

Still, it's not the friendliest color on most people. I'm hoping to get Cycle of Life in the next random since I missed it when it was posted. It's one of the best designs I've seen on woot in months, one of my favorite to come out of the derby, and one of the best uses of heather gray, but despite all of that I have a feeling the way the colors work won't be that flattering in the end. I'd still wear it because it's great, but I don't have high hopes for how it will look on me. Heather gray can be a troublesome beast.

Really excited for the change; I even posted this week how my designs would be affected if woot had different light-colored options.

Like others, I'd love to have seen Mint or Eggplant (even though that's dark), but I'm more happy just to have different choices--Thanks Woot!

As for Heather Gray, I won't miss it. An Orange, well, it always looked awesome on my monitor but the monitor could never seem to capture how truly BRIGHT it was.

Heather always seemed to be a much more versatile canvas than a lot gave it credit for. Even just for the change and as a viable alternative I'm excited at the prospect of silver. I think the slate will prove to be a worthy addition as well. When you have a shirt design and you're swapping out shirt colors to see what works best, the difference between shades of the same color can make a lot of difference. Those differences should be a creative gain for the possibilities it offers designers, as well as the grey loving buyers. Some of the lighter shirt colors that are on the muted end of the spectrum are where I would put my vote if there were more shirt additions like blue jean, jade and sand.

I have a daily coming up on heather grey... is it being moved to silver?

and

why not pink?

Woot's giving us new derby colors? Is this real life?

I hate to complain in the face of good news, but I agree with those saddened by the lack of purple in this announcement. I'd rather have a nice purple than slate.

In case woot mods are paying attention to people's reactions, mark me down as wishing that eggplant was chosen instead of sliver. I'm also sad to see heather go, but I guess I'm in the minority on that count. I'm actually wearing a heather woot shirt as I write this.

Put me down as someone who also wishes there were more light colored earth tone shirt options outside of creme. Also, while I'm personally not a fan of purple, I can see how it would appeal to a lot of designers and buyers so I'm surprised it wasn't added.

Oh well. More grays are always good, given that asphalt was starting to dominate my tshirt collection.
