Staff

Everyone's got beauty on the inside, right? That's what our moms keep telling us, anyway. This week show us what virtues give people that inner beauty everyone's always on about. Whether it's kindness, tolerance, humility, or some other crap that doesn't really exist.

No text only designs.
No Star Wars.

Looking at the top shirts from the previous derby, I can tell why that No Star Wars rule is there.

Yeah, so there's that...

Sometimes, you just have to say "no" to the predictable. There ARE people in the world who want to wear something without a crutch character on it.

As it is, I can see why Lucas Arts have gone after certain companies, banning Star War shirts from being sold. Nothing like seeing a character you developed and created be used in a cheesy gimmick.

Beauty within?

Perhaps sexy skeleton designs, Alien chest burster designs, but not sure what else (maybe cuteness inside rib cages)?

I'm at a loss... so maybe this week is a skipper for me...

[Spoken]
Don't look at me

Every day is so wonderful
Then suddenly, it's hard to breathe
Now and then, I get insecure
From all the pain, I'm so ashamed

I am beautiful no matter what they say
Words can't bring me down
I am beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can't bring me down... Oh no
So don't you bring me down today

To all your friends you're delirious
So consumed in all your doom
Trying hard to fill the emptiness
The pieces gone, left the puzzle undone
That's the way it is

You are beautiful no matter what they say
Words can't bring you down
You are beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can't bring you down, oh, no
So don't you bring me down today...

No matter what we do
(no matter what we do)
No matter what we say
(no matter what we say)
We're the song inside the tune
Full of beautiful mistakes

And everywhere we go
(and everywhere we go)
The sun will always shine
(sun will always shine)
And tomorrow we might wake on the other side

We are beautiful no matter what they say
Yes, words won't bring us down
We are beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can't bring us down, oh, no
So don't you bring me down today

Oh, yeah, don't you bring me down today, yeah
Don't you bring me down ooh... today

A few ideas for the stuck.

  • A bunny helping a turtle across the finish line.
  • A polar bear using a narwhal to rescue a penguin.
  • A Ninja painting Sumi-e
  • Pirates handing out treasure to the poor.
  • (as above) Bowser giving Mario a bouquet of Fire-Flowers.
  • Link with a Navi who is actually quiet and helpful.
  • Dr. Who...something
  • A cute cat...doing anything.

If allowing pop culture resulted in Derbies in which all top places were Pop Culture, I'd say you had a point. But let's go back and look at the last 5 shall we?

257: On the Beach
- Top 10 - 4 Pop[3 SW], 1 Kawaii, 1 Turbunguin, 3 Artistic
- Top 25 - 11 Pop[6 SW, 2 Mario]*, 1 Kawaii, 2 Turbunguin, 1 Bacon, 1 Robot, 7 Artistic
* 12 if you count Cthulhu as pop
- Total Pop: 29 in 131 [10 SW, 4 Mario, 1 TMNT]

256: Lost in a Good Book
- Top 3 - 1 Artistic, 1 Cat
- Top 10 - 3 Artistic, 2 Cats, 2 Pop[1 Mario]
- Top 25 - 7 Artistic, 2 Cats, 1 Turbunguin, 1 Kawaii, 7 Pop[2 Mario]*
* 8 if you count Cthulhu as pop
Total Pop: 15 in 88 (11 are LITERARY pop culture)

255: Double Take Derby 17
- Top 3 - 1 Pop, 2 Cats
- Top 10 - 3 Pop[1 SW], 2 Artistic, 2 Cats
- Top 25 - 7 Pop[2 Sw], 5 Artistic, 2 Kawaii, 5 Cats, 1 Turbunguin
Total Pop: 8 in 126

224: Trompe-l'œil
- Top 3 - 1 Pop, 2 Artistic
- Top 10 - 3 Pop[1 SW], 4 Artistic, 1 Cat, 1 Robot
- Top 25 - 8 Pop[1 Sw]*, 5 Artistic, 2 Kawaii, 2 Cats, 1 Robot
* 9 if you count Cthulhu as pop
Total Pop: 7 in 100

223: Insects, Bugs, & Arachnids (But Not Worms, Because Gross)*
- Top 3 - 2 Artistic
- Top 10 - 5 Artistic, 1 Kawaii
- Top 25 - 11 Artistc, 4 Kawaii
Total Pop: 0 for 146
* No Pop Culture Allowed

CONCLUSION: Pop is no more common that Artistic. Even when the Derby is an ART FORM this is True. Even when POP CULTURE IS EXCLUDED we see only a MARGINAL rise is Artistic Designs.
And personally I think that's more attributable to the stained glass effect of Butterflies and DragonFlies than the Pop restriction.

Also, look at the book derby. At least 8 rejections due to copyright infringement. Pop culture is risky, and doesn't necessarily increase your chances of winning.

Pop vs. Non-pop, or Pop vs. Artistic?

Currently I would call POP on:
Thanks For All The Fish
Star Powered
Family Breakfast
The Formula For Success
The Keepers of the Word
The Binge
Leonardo
We Be Rollin'
Inconceivable
Iron or Gold
Tough to Please

I call Artistic on:
Swept Away
Star Fishing
Cranes Nouveau
Pip-squeak
