Well, how do you fare compared to the Zeitgeist? Chat up your fellow wooters and let us know how lame this poll was or what obvious choices we missed. For example: Was this poll a) STUPID, b) DUMB, c) POINTLESS or d) ALL OF THE ABOVE?

I chose portal, but others right up there are Bioshock (for it's psychologic twists), Psychonauts (simply for cleverness), Whiplash (for it's comedic approach).

I'm sure many others, if I got enough time to play others - obviously my list is *ahem* slightly old...

Typically the SNES RPG's, Chrono Trigger still being my favorite game of all time.

Again, this question is about story not creative gameplay. I have a lot of love for Portal, especially its sequel.

Fallout 3 or Skyrim.
Played them for months!
Looks like Assassins Creed 3 will be the same situation!

+1 for any Infocom game. All they had was writing. But of those listed, I think Half-Life has the best story. I want to say Mass Effect, but I like the richness and detail of that world, not necessarily the writing or storylines.

I don't think a lot of people played this game, but it's still the best I've played.

I'm going with the Final Fantasy series. While it isn't what it used to be, the series as a whole is very creative & unique in many ways. The heart of my childhood will always lie with Aerith at the bottom of that lake...

Nothing can beat Monkey Island, ever. Also, Portal and Half-life should be one choice together since their stories are related/in the same universe.

Of the choices given, the Half-Life series has the best story. Portal 1+2 has the best writing.

Portal has great writing, as in dialog, but not storyline. I went with Mass Effect. I'm just going to overlook that whole "ending" thing.

Mass Effect. I like how each volume is kind of its own mini piece. The first is the classic space opera (complete with film filter). The second is the heist movie, complete with collecting the disparate characters into one cohesive group to take on a big task. The third is the hard-edged and dark against all odds film, the Return of the King of the tale, in which our heroes must battle incredible odds with something so intangible as hope and determination.

THANK YOU! How did I miss this poll? Also, Deus Ex, System Shock 2, Baldur's Gate 1&2, KOTOR 1&2, NWN: Mask of the Betrayer, I also happened to like the story in Dragon Age: Origins but that's up for debate.

There's the usual suspects - Fallout 3, Bioshock, Fallout 2, etc.

And then there's the real good stuff:

Star Control 2 & Space Quest 4

The writing for both those games is great for different reasons!

BTW, you can get Star Control 2 for free on the Google Play Store & PC (It's called the Ur-Quan Masters now).

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines. Not only the best storyline/writing of any video game, but the best voice-acting, too!

I second the Final Fantasy series. Great storyline in my opinion.

Best writing without a storyline? Animal Crossing. For sure.

Anyone play Bard's Tale? The one with Cary Elwes as the voice of the bard. That has some really funny writing, and the story is over the top spoof at its best.

Wrong, wrong, wrong. The Metal Gear story has been running for decades, and is the most captivating of them all. (I am an admitted Metal Gear/Metal Gear Solid addict.)
