There are actally a few examples of late entry shirts winning. Cool Breeze was a late entry, I believe.

Pensketch wrote:Honestly? It looks to me like a random collection of images from an "urban style" vector graphics pack. Don't get me wrong, great designs can be done using images from graphics packs ( http://www.gomediazine.com/success-stories/user-showcase-highlight-round-6/ ) and I've used a few of them myself in both my entries this week (skyline behind the zombies and telephone poles shooting out of the guy's head) and as the ink splotch background for my "Zombunny Brainers" However in all those cases, the vector pack isn't the main focus of the design.

So it's not so much what you're using, but how you choose to use it. And to me this just looks like you went through and grabbed random "street" images and plopped them in a pile with almost no thought to how they interact with each other.

That said, this kind of stuff is popular, and you'll probably get far more votes than anything I make will. It just won't get my vote. Sorry if that seems harsh, but you did ask.

I appreciate the feedback, no need to apologize. I actually went and found the images I was looking to use and converted them to vectors with PS and AI. I had this idea in my head as soon as I saw the theme -- to mix things associated with the city in an attempt to recreate the busy-ness of city life -- kind of a mashup of sorts. I wanted the street to run the length of the shirt, the lamp to rise above it all, the manhole to be in the middle of the design, and the others to fill in the space as I saw fit.

I also realize these shirts are popular, and it was a design I could see myself wearing, and hopefully others like it too. I'll tweak it some more and submit it sometime later today, I hope.

Thanks again for the feedback.

I took my first submission down. Before I resubmit with fixed colors, what do you think of this:

It depends on what you are going for. The drop shadow does make it pop off the shirt, but it's not something you would see in a spray painted design. Perhaps different areas of black spray paint behind the white, so it doesn't look as cookie-cuter?

I don't vote until the end of the Derby for just that reason.

Also, Woot - I've lived in rural, suburban, and urban areas and I tell you that raccoons are an URBAN problem, not a rural one - just noticing your incorrect reason for rejecting the raccoon shirts someone submitted.

Come one people some people spend hours making a design for the shirts. If you can take (steal) an image and spend 2 mins to put it on you shouldnt be allowed to submit anymore.

I hope they don't flat out reject it. The concern I have is he pretty much put a filter on an image. They have put the hammer down on the not original before.

Well, I resubmitted the design, I don't feel like changing it anymore, and I'm satisfied with how it turned out.

I agree the that by itself it looks cookie cutter, but I tried darker splotches behind and it really wasn't working out, so here's what I went with:

Vote here if you like it, and I'd love to hear any thoughts or feedback!

Don't change a thing, you struck oil! I like the grimy urban feel to it. One of those votes are mine.

Thanks. I appreciate the comments. After all the other comments I did some work on it and I still like the grimy version better myself. It would look prettier without the pollution.. but then again, so would the mountains here in Colorado...

I don't want a pickle, I just want to ride my motorcycle.

I have to agree there. I was very timid when they said no words, but it has really opened up graphic minds. Good call woot, just hope it won' t be a continuous restriction.

I agree that it was smart to re-submit it in the center, but I don't necessarily think it's better that way. For some reason, everyone here likes the designs centered in the middle of the shirt, but I think this design looked much better at the bottom. I was actually going to submit mine with the design at the bottom, but realized it would lose a lot of votes.

Hey, the early shirt gets the worm.
Or the early bird gets the vote.

We shouldn't have to rewrite metaphorical proverbs to suit our latter entries.

It's just so hard to predict what those non-designer, non-forum-posting wooters will vote for and buy.
It must be hard to be woot. They've been trying to do that forever.

For the record, what is woot's policy regarding the copying of a photograph to use as a shirt design? Does it have to be copyrighted, or does it matter?

stevieg123

quality posts: 0 Private Messages stevieg123

To woot:

I think it would be a good idea to limit the entries to one per person and limit the votes to 3 per person.

The current state of things creates scatter bombs of votes and designs. Votes and designs should be well thought out and precious, IMO.

well, i think images centered are just generally more wearable. Creatively I like the idea of varied placement, but it can be difficult to wear shirts with designs predominantly at the bottom. It's not visible while sitting, tucked in, if you are carrying something, etc. Anyhow, in this case I don't think there is much in the design that reinforces a need to place it at the bottom - and for me I'd prefer to have the design in a more wearable location.

I like that idea, the number of votes should be limited, 3 is a great number. I don't think entries should be limited though. One more thought to add to this, perhaps there should only be one or two days of voting? I the current system is causing people to rush to get their designs finished so they can get as many votes as possible. Giving the artists more time will not only result in better designs, but it will give voters a chance to see every design before the voting starts.
