Derby #13: Halloween

Here it is, the one people have been thinking about for weeks (and submitting entries for almost as long), at lucky number 13: Halloween! The whole spectrum of hallowed imagery is in play, from arched-back black cats to warty-nosed witches to the "Father Murphy" costume we once saw in a five-and-dime store in the early '80s, complete with cheapo plastic Merlin Olsen mask. The winning shirts will be sold as part of a full week of Halloween shirt festivity, and we've already chosen the commissioned shirts we're going to sell during that week. So if it looks like we ripped off your werewolves-trick-or-treating-in-Atlantis shirt idea, well, we didn't. Now go trick our voters into awarding you the treat of $500. It's all in the name of Halloween.

I stayed up till 3am for this? Um. Awesome?

Please give me your thoughts. Shall I bother to colour neatly? Is it clear he's yawning? Do monsters wear pants? Will I ever stop sucking so badly? I need to go to bed. It's nighttime in Australia.

The rough coloring is good. No need for pants... I think the shirt is weird though.

I think the stripes on the shirt probably need to have that same sketchy feel as the rest of the piece. That'll probably make the shirt look a little more like it belongs.

So, woot overlords, any chance of free speedy shipping for this week of Halloween goodness? I just know smart post would get me my Halloween shirts just in time for Thanksgiving.

My favorite woot: Gourmet Coffee Cafe Single Serving Coffeemaker with Free (crappy) Coffee

i like the concept & the execution. what a great opportunity to do a t-shirt within a t-shirt.

i'm thinking you're not sold on the yawning. try opening the mouth more, tilting the head back and making the eyes squinty instead of shut.

My final shameless plug in a more relevant forum.....

I've made a new Puffaluff shirt specifically for Halloween. I've decided to try and sell it via my puffaluff web site instead of annoying everyone here with more puffaluff entries.

Click the image above or click here to order the shirt. Thanks!

You might also do one with just a lone ranger type mask... or maybe add a voice bubble (like the ones on the blog) saying "trick or cheese".

I have a conservative 5 ideas for this derby - there's a few more that I don't know if I'll be able to complete in time, but we'll see... It should be a fun one.

Please tell me they used their 60 day policy to "commission" some of Pen's old designs!

I'm looking forward to it. I was actually surprised and pleased at your civility toward Jack near the end last time on the gradient issue. My one request is that you please shrink your sig pix. Thanks.

I'm still just hoping to receive my Zombie Season shirts in time for Halloween...no sign of those shipping yet though, so it probably won't happen.

Neat! Nice take on my idea, I like the coloring job, but I agree the shirt is a little odd. And the mask isn't really obvious that it' s a kid mask. Maybe a full face mask? And do monsters need pants? I like the purple fur. I don't think this sucks badly at all.

AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH........ whatever.

Agree with AttilatheMom on the mask issue - full face (maybe even flesh colored or with a fringe of blonde hair - if you could fit it into the 6 color limit) would get the point across a bit better IMO. The balled fist does make it look a bit more like crying than yawning, maybe opening the hand could fix that. I also think the monster could use a nose or snout. He's cute as it is, but I think that it looks a bit funny with that missing (of course, he is a monster so it's not technically necessary).

Overall I like the color choices and the roughness, the monster's shirt and pantslessness look fine to me, and I think you did the idea justice.

I thought so too. Maybe having his hand open and covering his mouth instead of rubbing his eye would get that across better.

I like the idea, but (however juvenile) I can't get over the impression that he has a pole up his a**. Plus, physically speaking, that would be an impressive feat to balance it like that without leaning the rake against something.

Like the detail on the scarecrow body and face itself though. And contrary to others, I think the shirt color choice is fine.

Yeah, I'd have to agree. For me it's not the huge pile in the back, but rather the small pieces (crumbs?) in front of him that look a little off.
