just stopped by to take a peek at the fog and say hi. it feels weird taking a whole week away from the derby after not leaving it alone for a second last week.

i see that derek's fog'd shirt was similar to another shirt? too bad.

Quick question: I noticed several members posting references to GoodStorm for selling tshirt designs. Have any of you seen the print quality of these shirts? I've used Cafepress in the past, but sometimes the colors aren't quite what I expected. Just wondered how the two compared.

Ok so I currently have the skills of pre-schoolers using dull crayons on 1-ply toilet paper when it comes to creating designs for t-shirts, especially compared to what I've seen in these contests.

But I have had a few ideas for past/current contests (i.e., urban crop circles using streets; inversed pumpkin [take a picture from inside a carved pumpkin and you’ll see what I mean]) that I was going to submit but didn't because it would have taken me too long to finish the design because I am still learning the software.

If I did submit it wouldn't have been until Monday night/Tuesday morning because my weekends are usually booked and don’t have the hours I would need to work on it. I have read, and agree, that the design would have to be amazing to gather the votes to even approach the fog if they were posted on or after those days, so that would leave me and my attempted art out completely.

So here’s a suggestion to tweak the contest that I think would help everyone. The only thing I am suggesting to tweak is when the voting actually begins. Move the start of the voting period to begin in the afternoon or late Monday.

This would give Woot time to comb through the initial waves of submissions and do their rejections and would also allow people to modify their own designs if needed. The start/ending of the submissions and when the voting ends would remain the same. The 3-4 days of voting, in my opinion, would be enough for voting on the designs.

I do think it is great contest where all three sides win (Woot, artist, and consumer).
[lurk]

This wouldn't help everyone, only the people not winning...

We're actually waiting for the first couple brave souls to get theirs and let us know.

What is with people entering their kids crayon drawings as shirt designs... it may be cute to them, but to the rest of us it only makes the derby page take longer to load... Unless I'm mistaken, one was even rejected, retracted then resubmitted.

Get a life.

I love this shirt, and I would buy it if it went up for sale. But I'm wondering how it's getting past the copyright infringement issue. Even if this represents kids in Joker and Batman costumes, these are still DC trademarked characters.

Since the "Unusual Suspects" one got rejected, I would like to simply know how this one is surviving. I don't get the logic.

I mean, I like it, but I'm afraid to vote for it given the fact that it has more than 6 colors. I would have thought it would be rejected by now, but as of this posting it's in 15th place.

Oh and btw, I'm so happy that my "Mistaken for a Vampire" has made it this far. I've never had a design in the top 100 at this point in the Derby.
Thanks for all the support, and keep voting!

I was wondering what everyones program of choice was to make their designs. I'm pretty new to this and although i'm happy with how my designed turned out it was pretty tedious to make and it doesn't look like th quality is up to the same levels as others. I used gimp portable which is close to photoshop. I also have inkscape which is close to illustrator. Any advise or tips you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

It's not, they just don't delete entries like that unless 1) lots of complains 2) it gets close or into the fog. That way they don't have to make people upset. If it doesn't win, then they don't really have to reject it and save themselves the bitching and moaning.

Illustrator, for sure - although Inkscape is a nice, free substitute. Also nice is the Free version of Xara for Linux - it actually does some things (gradient masks, for instance) FAR better than Illustrator.

Yeah, I just don't get all the crudeness toward the end of this one. I would think that anyone who wants to share this sort of garbage would find a more effective way of doing so.

Also, for future reference, the term "snuffleupagus" [that is, r a p e] is never going to grace the fabric of a winning shirt. Feel free to stop using it in your designs.

I'm starting to think goodstorm is even slower than woot + smartpost, as they haven't shipped my shirt yet. And it's been 12 days since I ordered it. Avg smartpost delivery to my house is 10-15 days. Longer if the mail sorting machine gets hungry and tries to eat my shirt (5 of 6 bags arrived with holes and tears, 1 so bad the post office rebagged it). Hopefully, when my close encounters shirt gets here it will be unholed AND the right size. I can't wait to see what the hallowoot shirt is tomorrow. (Congrats Riff).

Just as a general aside, I am getting really tired of hearing about how slow Smartpost is....

Woot is VERY GENEROUSLY offering free shipping...so if it takes 10-20 days...BIG DEAL! You paid nothing for shipping. If you are in a hurry to get your shirt...pay the $5 s/h and get it next day shipping. Otherwise....STFU!

It's not the speed I mind, its the half chewed up bags and one slightly damaged shirt that bugs me. But since I paid shipping for the goodstorm shirt I would have expected it to get here faster is all. Didn't mean to complain.

That's your opinion, that you're free to state and you have, and others disagree, which they are also free to state and they have. Obviously neither side is going to say, "Oh you're right, I was wrong, it is/isn't a cool shirt!" There's no need to repeat the same sentiment to every single person who has expressed admiration for that design.

Can't complain about shipping? Do you work for Smartpost or something? I find the information on shipping time for other people's packages to be useful as a gauge to compare my shipping times. "STFU" is a bit harsh here.

OK... I think today is the last day to vote, and for personal reasons I'd like to crack the top 10 . If you haven't voted yet , this is my only attempt to beg you to...

In any case, I have a number of other similar designs for sale via "Bountee" at

http://www.bountee.com/user/memetic

That Woot would never consider printing ...Since I've already placed them there, I can't use them on a Derby in the future. Also, a couple are a bit risque, and Woot wouldn't be down with that...

Like:

Also, I'd like to say that the folks at Woot have been very responsive and fun to talk to...Thanks so much to them for running such a neat shop.

Frankly, I like the snark you usually bring the forums, so I've got nothing against you. I just thought it might be nice for people to know that the whole 'pay nothing for shipping' might not be/probably isn't "exactly true". I've worked with a number of retail and wholesale companies and we'd do things like 'free shipping' or 'super low freight' and the like because we just calculated shipping fees into our original markup on items. That's probably what woot does as well.

Just to defend first: I'm not saying that this is in anyway a bad or shady tactic. It's pretty common actually, and I have nothing against it if that's what woot is doing. I'm just pointing out that 'Free' most likely isn't free.

That said, my first Woot experience was great - I input a code that Woot generously offers so that Texas residents don't get screwed on Taxes, and for some reason it didn't take - they were nice enough to refund that to my card, even though they really aren't under any obligation to do so. I don't know...I know Woot is, like any business, trying to make money but they certainly understand the value of loyal customers. I think that they are taking the approach of building brand loyalty, even if they have to take a bit of a margin hit to achieve that. Seems successful so far!

I mean, are there thousands of hip people in the discussion forums over at Target.com? Does Walmart have people staying up late at night (except Black Friday) watching their website for the next great deal?

I like the fact that my $10 (or $15) shirt is indeed, $10 (or $15) on my card, and watching the mail has become a game. By the time I get a shirt I've generally forgotten that I was expecting it, so it's like christmas in the mail every week!

AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH........ whatever.

I'd say it's actually incredibly fair to say STFU.

Woot offers free shipping. Woot makes no claim that it is quick shipping or efficient shipping. Just that it is free. They offer a reasonable next-day option (I've spent more for standard). You take the free option at your own risk.

And really, it's not that risky. Sure, there are a lot of complaints, but that's from an immediate gratification culture. I remember seeing those TV offers when I was younger, and they'd ALWAYS say "allow 4-6 weeks for delivery" or something of that nature. It was just understood that things took longer to ship than to buy at the store. Now, we're all technological. We see a week as too slow. We see a month as an eternity. We want want want and need need need, and complain when we don't get our way. I'm not saying I love the build-up... I don't know anyone who prefers waiting... but if my shirt takes two weeks, hell, if it takes a month, I have other shirts. I will survive. Life will go on. And I will have saved five bucks.

I get mine in 3-4 days. living in texas is great. It's like the extra 83cents tax is for the fast shipping or something!
