Thanks for the comments. It's encouraging!

Ok, I thought the best way to show graffiti is to actually do what people consider graffiti- drawing over something... so what better to do than my own design from a few weeks ago? Because of the small amount of votes, it probably DID suck...

Isn't graffiti the name of the software used on palms for stylus-to-text writing? And the style of writing on the pictured palm is using the "graffiti" letters.

No. Other than both being about the caterpillar in Alice in Woderland, those have nothing in common. The style is completely different, and Cho's includes the completely unique idea that Alice has painted the caterpillar.

And for good or ill, there's a derby tradition of minor tweaks happening to the print file before it has been sent to Woot. In the past, spelling errors and minor design changes have been made this way. Until Woot requires the print file before voting begins, this will continue.

Here is Cho's Response to that comment....

Hey! thanks for all your comments. I couldn't agree more on a lot of things, but allow me to explain.

No, it wasn't something I did and just tried to apply it to the theme. I actually had an entry I submitted on Friday which I felt wasn't on theme, and I removed it. I worked on Alice Saturday - Sunday morning. About it being not graffiti-enough, i'm not too sure -- I've lived in urban environments all my life and graffiti isn't limited to just illegible text and funky lines. A lot of them are done by paintbrush, airbrush, pastels, and so on - but I know what you have in mind about what graffiti should look like -- it's just not the style I was going for [if you're interested, please check out "Graffiti World Street Art From Five Continents" and you'll see what I mean]. Truthfully, this woot crowd wouldn't of gone for a more general graffiti approach to the illustration, which is why I compromised and did something more intricate / illustrative. This is also why I included Alice, to reinforce the idea that it's been painted on the wall or shirt.

As for the "changes" yah - I know you guys may think i'm getting special treatment when I say I'll make "changes" to the design when I submit the print file. No, this isn't a double standard. It is generally frowned upon, but if it doesn't change the composition [what the voters vote for], and doesn't "change" the design, then it's fine. Honestly, I just want to put out the best shirt possible, if it means I have to add some minute detail no one will even notice, then i'll do it. So don't be angry with me about that, i'm doing it for the people who want to proudly wear their shirt without being asked "hey what's with her face".

In conclusion, i'm sorry if that offended anyone or if in anyway I made it seem like it was ok for just "cho" to do, because it's not. I'm not trying to change your minds on what you think of me in general, but I can assure you - there's no double standard here, and I do all my designs on the spot every week. Thanks for reading guys.

To add: about alice having the hose -- I was thinking of escher. Kind of playing around with the idea that creator is a part of the creation. As you well know, I don't illustrate stuff that would actually function correctly in real life. It's an illusion, but I think I failed getting that across.

Well, they both illustrate an existing work of fiction in which a caterpillar is smoking a hookah. Otherwise, I don't see that they're all that similar.

Everyone who submits has the option to email their finished file to woot instead of submitting it through the form. It's not that Cho is the only one who gets this time, it's that he's the only one so far who's been vocal about using it.

The thread referred to is here, look near the end.

and I never said anything about gradients anywhere, personally. That message did get through, evidently, despite my design being no different in it's display characteristics than derek's design. I actually love his design, and I've voted for it, pauses to make sure, but someone posted a question about why it had a gradient when gradients are always rejected. That raised my questioning spirit, and led to me making a similar shirt, not a bad design, I think, displayed the same way. My concern is that putting a gradient on the detail image makes some designs, maybe most designs, look better. and that means they get more votes, and that gives an unfair advantage. I think in future derbies they ought to ban this practice.

from the 'Huh?' link,
What do you mean by "design detail"?
The design detail is an image of your design on a solid background of one of the shirt.woot base colors.
list of colors.

doesn't say on a gradient.

vishneda wrote:I wonder if the poster is referring to the visual effect that the high red gives against the light grey. The illusion of a pink glow is there at first, but as your eyes separate the colors the illusion fades. This is probably stronger on the screen, where the bright colors are more luminous than they would be in print.

Anyway, this shirt rocks and the colors are fine with me. If you did change it for submission at uneetee the one thing I would ask you to change would be to make the bullseye more like a vinyl record and less like a bullseye. That takes the whole "target" element out if it.

Hey, I agree!

I have to ask you a question. Please only answer if you're going to buy something from woot eventually.

Do you enjoy life, or does that joy only come from criticising things? You could try commenting on a design you like, for a chance at trying something new. I mean, really. If you're here looking at the designs, why not spend time promoting the designs you do like? You could even go buy a pair of SanDisks and gain the right to really support them via voting. Novel, I know.

I waffled over "suck" vs. "stink"... but I thought I'd give the more serious one a go. If it gets rejected, it will be interesting to see if it is the wording versus the concept. IE- Wonder if they would kick it out simply because it's a commentary on top of another design...
