slomer wrote:hey now TG... panic + food = good! I know it is one of those themes that gets beat to death but it is a heck of a lot better than friggin koi and trees (although that embarassed tree autumn one was good). Actually truth be told wacky anthropomorphism is just cool period. I will take food, chairs, animals, whatever you have if it is funny. Maybe someone should make a shirt that has humanized shirts on it! oh, gmv

I think the difference between "food panicking as it is eaten or otherwise readied for consumption" and "koi and trees" is specifics. In the fall derby, for example, we had "Autumn = Embarrassment" and rglee's Tree Toupee, which both took on the same tree quality in very different ways. We also saw Summer Leads to FA.IL, which had a tree as a central design element, but used it as only a part of a larger concept. It's an overused element, but it's one that can be made fresh with new concepts. No matter what food is panicking, however, it's still going to be pretty much the same joke. And like the donuts, it goes stale fast.

Re: The Last Panicking Food Shirt You'll Ever Need

Sometimes there's a thin line between biting (so to speak) satire and tasteless (so to speak) pandering. But this is pretty clear satire. Oddly enough, I bet it's gotten a lot of sincere votes because it really is kind of fun. Nice work in spite of yourself, tgentry!

Especially about the Octopi / other cephalopod based woots. If people are tired of food and other themes which have become cliche on this site then simply don't vote for them, or better yet innovate something new that all the other Wooters will then emulate and ultimately transform in to its own cliche.

But it would be a shame to let a great design like this one fall threw the cracks simply because of an Unofficial Food Related Woot Embargo, hereby know as the U.F.R.W.E.

Leave "No Grapes" in the Haight.

Again, it's about what you can do with a concept. There is very very very little one can do with the panicked food concept, because it is a specific concept. As for octos, if we just look at Cho's work alone, we have the pattern derby one with one big octo made up of smaller ones, we have sashimi hunters, which had a bunch of little divers getting back at their nemesis with chopsticks, and we have this current one, where the war wages on with an octopus coming after divers with nets. Three different concepts with a similar main element. As opposed to a bunch of identical concepts with only the type of item changed. There are plenty of action films out there, too, but some take the action genre and build something at least slightly different, while others put out Die Hard 14.

While I think the title does lend a lot of the charm, I also think that Rock/Paper/Scissors is ingrained into our popular culture deeply enough for people to get this either way.

I agree completely. But this begs the question - what's wrong with turtles? Trees and bird silhouettes, like panicking food, usually end up pretty much the same, but turtles are just as versatile as cephalapods.

if i lost the pixels, and just did it more freehand-style would that help? i feel like changing it much from the original would take away from the instant recognizably and charm.

Re: Within this World of Chaos...

Way cool style!!! It is a little dark, but I can get over that. The only small critique I could give is that the Design Detail pic almost looks like an abstract Jesus wearing a crown of thorns... maybe I'll see the Virgin Mary in another one. That being said, this is a very cool design. Gets a vote from me.

I'm not really sure... it'd be kind of tough to pull off. the freehand would make it a parody though. best idea in the derby I think. just that nasty copyright.

valarking wrote:I think Banksy is boring and he's certainly not the first person I think of when I see spray painted imagery.

I was just really looking forward to getting one of these, and to see some nerd-virgin come in and spend all that time to compile a list of reasons why it should be rejected is ridiculous. He can have fun with the faggy animal friendship shirts he'll get "for his girlfriend". I wear shirts because I find them visually appealing, not because I think they're a totally unique and insightful statement. I mean, it's a frakking bomb planet. Wow, cutting political commentary right there.

Valarking,
You make no sense and I suspect you may be missing some of your faculties. First off I am a woman, not a "nerd-virgin" in search of "male nerdy graphic tees" for my "girlfriend". Second I compiled no such list for "why it should be rejected". I don't even know what this "it" you speak of is. If you buy shirts solely because they are visually appealing then there is a good chance you look like a Druish princess hipster and take yourself (very) seriously. What does the Bomb Planet shirt have to do with anything? Why did you bring it up? What are you talking about? Please try to make a more coherent argument next time you try to post on the boards.
-Obstacle

P.S. Stop writing "frakking". You sound like a sissy. Just say the word or shut up.

AdderXYU wrote:Solid point.

I mean, the guy DID make a Dark Knight entry last week with bats. Which by the rules should have been rejected, due to the Dark Knight being about BATMAN, which was not evident solely by the title, but was not only kept around, but HM'd.

So woot precedent states that any David Shenoda design that goes against a stated restriction based on weekly rules is unrejectable. Which should open up huuuuge avenues of creativity to those of us named David Shenoda

I don't know, maybe you're brain is too big. Or maybe you're vocabulary so large, that it's choked off the part of your brain that regulates common sense, but the design has nothing to do with the band or anything copyrighted. Furthermore, the title is not going to be on the shirt, so as far as the shirt itself goes, it's just a fish in a leaking shoe, ergo a design that need not be rejected.

And by the way, all this is secondary to the fact that it obviously is not going to win, and therefore probably not even worth the time it takes to review for rejection.
