If we remember our grade-school geography lessons right, 143% of the Earth's surface is covered by water. And despite what you might think from looking at our past t-shirts, there's more going on there than pirates, squids, and crashing waves. You can shoot one of those fish in that tired old barrel. Or you can take us on a journey of undersea exploration with a creative design that doesn't feature the same subject matter as countless other t-shirts. Voters, are you listening?

No text this week.

Our moderators are going to be very strict about recycled ideas in this Derby. If, say, your pirate shirt uses a similar concept to one already seen here or elsewhere, it will probably be rejected. The safest course: originality.

A call for originality? O.O

I fully expect to see a shirt done in the new popular style of a pirate fighting an Octopus with Crashing waves hitting both.

You can ride with me, or you can find your own path. Don't stab me in the back after I've cleared the way.

Originality... great, just when I figured out how to get ahead again.

YAY!!! another water theme!!! ::relaxes only slightly:: and you'll be monitoring. Great. Stick to what you say this time. And don't just allow every screwed up shirt that is only on theme because it has a sea animal on it.

I thank you.

Woot seems to associate artistic with waves.

Regardless, I am very curious to see how strict they are going to be with rejections, because there's no way people are going to be able to resist doing pirate entries this week.

Well, should be fun I like this theme

This has potential at least. Not that I have any faith in the derby.

Why not just ban pirates, squids and crashing waves outright?!? Please?

I'm half expecting woot to do this secretly and just reject every pirate, squid and crashing wave entry with a big "I told you so"

I dont have much yet other than maybe doing a take on the Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner.

Great theme. I like the strict anti-recycling rule. It's a shame that whales vs. squids are already overdone. Still...

Wow, I hope they are strikt about this one. I want to see tons of octo shirt in the reject pile.

They won't...

Because someone will actually be able to use one of those items in such a unique way, that it will be allowed to go forward and the rest will get cut and people will feel slighted.

I made this design a while back, but never subbed it here:

I never felt like it was finished. Any thoughts? Worth submitting?

Unless they flat out say they're banning octopi/squid, pirates, or crashing waves I don't really see a lot of rejecting and one or more of those will probably still win. I hope they'll come back and officially ban certain subjects. It would save them the hassle of dealing with complaints and gray areas to just be able to point to the official, clearly worded text saying NO.

Oh! I know! The PETA in me just hollared: Sea kittens!

Anyone doing seakittens after this point is just copying my idea! So there!

Should be a good theme- but it'll be tough for people to resist the resub itch- we've had several aquatic derbies already.

But as usual, I have an idea I'm not sure I can pull off in 1 day or two...

I heard about this "originality" thing a while back. An old drunk sailor told me about it late one night at the local pub. He said he had been tracking it for years and was very close to finding it.

I'm pretty sure he's fishing in the wrong waters.....

Soooo... would an angler fish be considered an overused subject? There's at least two shirts out there featuring one.. my concept would be very different though.. I'm thinking of an angler shaped submarine and a little driver looking out the eyeballs.

Thoughts???

Okay, here it is, my badly drawn on Xerox paper in ink Sea Kitten!

Whoa! I did not get that kitten spayed and she had kittens in the form of duplicate posts! I have taken the extra unwanted posts out back and sadly they died of claw hammer disease. You can ignore these now... it is probably best to anyway.

I bet if you search for "catfish" on cafepress or zazzle, you'll find several of these have been done already.

You would definitely risk rejection especially since there have been several angler fish submitted to woot itself. If you really believe in the concept (which is good), then do it up, but don't be surprised if it gets axed.

The design is strong, but it needs a shtick...
some humorous/witty element that seperates it from the rest

I actually made something sea related for the last derby but never submitted it.

I have been using Illustrator for my entries so far, but I have been having a real difficult time making the print-ready file (every color separate layer). Any pointers for me? Should I use a different program like Photoshop to make my vectors?

Also, do you have to submit the print ready file right away, or can it be e-mailed later?

Indeed... but given the style of the design, I'm not really sure how to pull that off. It might just have to be a serious shirt

Done...
I did see a couple of shirts that were similar, but I think my design should be unique enough... I want to do a school of them, and I have included front paws and may include some cleaning themselves...

Also those are 'catfish' Mine are SEAKITTENS! ;)
