Re: Of the Moment

If I could put the love of steampunk in my heart for this derby to make something that true fans of it would want, I definitely would. Unfortunately all I could do was research it, which I did do, and make what seemed on theme to me.

I get what you're saying tho, a lot of the designs just don't "feel" steampunk and if you're really into steampunk then you probably were looking forward to a good shirt that captured the spirit of it. It's disappointing when the winning ones don't. That's how I felt in the deco derby anyways. Btw, I'd still like a real deco shirt if anyone knows of one...

Thanks very much to those that do like the design tho. And those that don't, that's cool too. I just like the attention.

braveBebe wrote:This dosen't look like stempunk! You should've gave the girl HUGE goggles and one of those big furry hats that covers her ears. Oh and you need an artificial metal arm in there somewhere and maybe some smoke out of her ears... JK this is perfect. Any more steampunkiness would have ruined it. I love it, hope you get into the fog...

So you're saying it's OK that the design completely misses the theme of the derby because it looks good?

snarkygal wrote:There is nothing steampunk to this

I disagree there is nothing steampunk to this, as its title, it represents an idea coming to shape, and that idea is being expressed through abstract tendrils connecting to whirring gears.

Just because its pretty and blue doesn't mean it isn't steampunk.

It may not be grungy robots, but in my mind its there. All a matter of perspective and opinion of course.

HeartlineTwist wrote:Why, praytell, is this not steampunk, other than clearly breaking the Flying Penguins rule that has apparently been redacted.

There appears to be some feeling that steampunk must involve steam (I know that the steam has been pointed out in this already). The problem is that steam isn't a necessity of steampunk style. At the beginning of the derby woot pointed to the wikipedia article, which if I may say has a picture of a steampunk computer, with NO steam (for obvious reasons).

@JustJiggles Oh, and by the way, it is more likely that you got got it wrong, not four different artists.

Don't give up hope! I think that your design has a chance of making it back into the fog!

I was amazed that your shirt was rejected because of a color issue. I am actually surprised how often this has been an issue recently. Keep up the good work and submissions!

Re: Project A.N.U.B.I.S.

This is a representation of an alternate Steampunk reality where Pharaohs of Egypt discovered steam and had their own Victorian age. They created project A.N.U.B.I.S. for population control.

mrwednesday wrote:Please show us your submission as well. If the ability to analyze and criticize art requires that you be able to create art, surely praising it does so as well.

Hopefully my response to this isn't really needed because most people here are not foolish enough to try to make your point but given how often it seems to come up it felt necessary.

The OP said: "Tell me people, HOW DO YOU DO IT? What compels you? If I submitted a masterpiece and Ramyb submitted a shirt with a pile of excrement on it, by your voting record I would still lose! I'm flabbergasted..."

I merely submit that we test this theory...

Looks tons better on brown, though I must admit it took me a few glances to realize there was a girl on the left. Her dress blends into the smoke, making it fairly hard to notice.

wickedDesigns wrote:Very creepy. I wish the arm was a little less solid to better match the style of the rest of the image.

Thanks! That's a good observation. I wish that I would have thought about that earlier. I actually drew it as an outline, and filled it in after transferring it to computer. I also thought about giving it a pattern like those seen in skeleton watches.
