Re: Roughly BBQ

It's a stretch but a clever play on words nonetheless. Would be difficult to "get" if I didn't know this was a barbecue derby, but I'm sure you know that already.

The "yay broccoli" face is getting old. I'd like it if no one ever used that "two dots and a half-moon smile" face ever, ever again.

I'd be more upset if your panicked marshmallows weren't so damn hilarious. For now, that pretty much makes up for the old hot dog faces.

At least you don't have any unrealistic expectations here. This is a great idea though! I'd also like to have seen graham cracker spaceships or something but I hope you'll get to work a bit harder on your future entries. Welcome!

Could also be rejected for non-incidental text. Take away the plus and equal sign and you would have no idea what the shirt means.

Funny and well made... Yet I wonder how many more Star Wars Themed BBQ entries we will see this week. This IS the third so far if I'm not mistaken. Fails to GMV for lack of originality I'm afraid.

Though I will admit this is the best design out of the three, so at least you got that.

I would rock this shirt. It not only is funny but it works on a few levels. I think I would have leaned towrd keeping the evolution going with futuristic man with the Soylent green levitating it on the radio-pit, only to make it more subtle. Keep it up!-GMV

My advice to you: put a kitty on his head. Oh, and make the kitty in illustrator and spend 4 minutes at maximum on the kitty. You should get many, many more votes.

Re: Mongolian BBQ

As a person who is particularly picky about languages, I have a bone to pick with the fire character on the apron. First, though, as someone mentioned, Dragons aren't really part of Mongolian culture. That aside, I still take issue with the use of kanji.

From wikipedia: The official language of Mongolia is Khalkha Mongolian, which uses the Cyrillic alphabet, and is spoken by 90% of the population.

The character isn't even used in the official language. Therefore, the name Mongolian Barbecue doesn't apply to this shirt in any way. The character is an incorrect language (also, I'd have recommended the character for grill instead of heat/flame), Dragons aren't Mongolian and Mongolian barbecue uses swords/sticks and shields over fire.

All of that being said, I like the design. The dragon is well-done and it's a cute idea. But the misnomer kinda bugs me. -_-;

EDIT: And before someone goes "Yeah, well what would YOU call it?!" I should probably say that had I made this design or a similar one I'd have called it "yakiniku" which is Korean barbecue that is popular in Superspryteachu! I choose you! and other Asian countries. Before Hangul was created, Korean was written in Chinese characters, justifying the 火("hi") in there. And Dragons are found in Korean culture, although the beard would have to be a little longer.

Pwnt.

Yeah, I was wondering about the Kanji and the dragon being Mongolian, but I still like the shirt. :3

I think that one thing that wooters really like to see is details. So - where this is a design that is likable and could do well, would probably do better with more detail instead of just perfect lines and solid colors. Take yesterday's shirt for example (the dancing salsa), it had that sketchy style to it - also check THIS style out. I sure wish I could make a design like that!

*sigh* I'll say it again, "someday..."

I was talking to a friend of mine about the derby, and said I should try to do a Draxx-esque design, with all the distressing and layering if I ever wanted to get any votes. I am still learning how to do all that stuff, but try to incorporate a little bit more into my designs every week. I am slowly getting good enough at the basics that design that took all day to make initially (and looked bad) now only takes a few hours (and look much better).

I think next week I will do something that is completely over the top for me, and just go all out using everything I have learned since I started doing the derby several months ago.

me2you wrote:I don't feel like I'm "qualified" to say anything, but thought you might like to hear something from somebody rather than nothing from anybody. ;-)

The colors in this design make it hard to look at, and actually hurt my eyes. Maybe if you were to try and use colors that compliment each other more. It's quite a challenge, for me, to be limited to only 6 colors - but I've seen amazing designs that only consist of one or two colors. Using the color of the shirt to the design's advantage really helps with that factor.

As for this design itself; there is something lacking... (I feel the same way about my own designs, so don't take this the wrong way please). Simple is a good thing, but sometimes small details go a long way. I would tell you what I think it needs, but I haven't figured that one out for myself yet.

I sure would like to be able to make a design like THIS

*sigh* Someday...

I feel the same way. This design was my speed over quality thursday night design for a noon friday submission. It is still rather plain. My biggest problem has always been the details, but I am working on that. I tend to get the gist of the design and call it done, when I should really spend more time adding the details to finish it off.

I really like the shirt you linked. It's designs like that that I pull new ideas from. I know how to do the things done in that shirt, but I would have never thought to combine each detail together to get that overall look. The same goes for someone like Draxx, who uses techniques I know how to do, but does them in a way I wouldn't have thought of.

I am going to have to start doing a design every week where I just go above and beyond, and do something out of the box for me. That way I force myself to think outside the box. Right now I do a thursday speed type design, then a second one where I actually spend a bit more time, but use basically the same train of thought. Next week my second design is gonna be something new.
