Re: Listen to your Conscience

Speaking as someone who's a little new around here... is there a back story to all this? I get the dislike that some have for cute stuff but the vitriol in this thread is eye-popping compared to any I've seen anywhere. I can't help but be deeply curious as to what's happened, because I feel like I've missed something.

I like the design, just not the placement. Good work though...

I would be better without the actual number 2 stuck in it so carelessly.. It isn't necessary when that image already implies; ''number 2.''

Thanks a bunch! I tossed around a bunch of ideas incorporating a #2 foam hand and this one seemed the simplest.

Not to be too much of a brown-nose, but I've admired the quality of your work for all these (2) weeks I've followed the derby

I'd love this on a brown shirt more than red, just to take the old-timey scheme all the way, but it's a charmer no matter what. Really cool.

AdderXYU wrote:1) Woot is not working. In general. The derby is broken. I'd argue that even having to have arguments like this is proof of that.

2) James Cho has gotten closest, with two prints in the Line Art derby, and one entry very close to the threshold. Others have done the dual print as well, but no-one has gotten closer to the triple-threat.

3) All I want is something reasonable to win. I don't care if it's something I want to buy. This is where I differ from most wooters... I have respect for what is actually in the running, while most wooters just want their favorite shirt to win. To me, not getting my favorite is OK so long as something worthy wins. I shouldn't spend so much money. but I can think of at least one shirt that deserves to MAKE money every week, and it never does. If people are, in essence, paying for the worst of the worst and thinking they got the best, IT IS NOT WORKING.

4) The contest doesn't have to be a gimmick. It is the way it is run which is a gimmick. It allows popularity to dictate quality, when that has never been the case, and plenty of woot shirts have proven that votes garnered do not reflect sales, meaning there is no real popularity gauge anyway. Fix the contest, fix the gimmick.

Seriously – Woot is not designed to be a high-minded online art exhibit. It is meant to let people vote on what they want to buy. Stop taking yourself so seriously. More over – if you think Woot isn’t working make your own site that does “work” to your narrow definition. Woot is fun – and part of the excitement is seeing what fellow wooters choose. I don’t always like it, but my opinion counts as much as anyone else. Sorry for the harshness, but I get tired of people dissing everyone who votes for something they like instead of something others think they should like.

Thanks for all the great comments guys.
My original design did not have the number 2 candle in it, but I thought it would be nice. It IS shirt woot's birthday after all...

AdderXYU wrote:This is a pretty sweet concept... I just wish the foam-man in the thought bubble looked as fun as the big guy. Also, the arms could be a bit more clear (maybe overlapping the edge of the held-down finger, or having fingers) to make the concept just a bit clearer and cleaner.

Overlapping the arms is a good idea--I thought about the issue earlier and really didn't want to add fingers.

As for the #1 guy, I dunno, I thought it would be funnier this way. I suppose it would have been much cuter if he was just really happy. Thanks for the the input!

Anyone who thinks "making your own [retail] site" is that easy doesn't have any concept of reality.

Look at what wins here, and HONESTLY tell me that I am more narrowminded than woot on the whole is.

I kind of hope these don't print so you can resubmit to Threadless (or elsewhere) with both designs together at the bottom side of the shirt (doing a rap-around under one arm).

I wish it was on royal blue, but as always that's just a personal quirk and not a real critique of your design. :d I like it! I also like the lines for the background. Simple, but it works well.

hmmm does that mean you wish all designs in general were on royal blue? Or just this one? I'm confused!;)
Thanks.... I don't like a lot of ink on my shirts, so I thought the red outlines/dress lines in the bg would help that a bit.

Glad to hear it, because the coloring strays from what I often gravitate towards. Thanks freiz!

It is not Woot you are insulting – it is everyone who votes. You don’t like what people vote for so you complain. Maybe if we were all as enlightened we would vote for “AdderXYU” approved art.

woot as a community. And I guess as a site, also, since they allow it.

It's not a matter of enlightenment. It should be VERY basic.

When it comes right down to it, my biggest problem with this piece is the huge gimmick crowding out the fog. As far as I'm concerned, it should be one or neither. I'm all for two different concepts succeeding by the same person if they are good concepts. These concepts are not strong enough on their own to warrant dual fogging.

Long story short, Ramyb has made a LOT of bunnies. I think they're reproducing on his desktop, and he keeps slapping them on to shirts to get rid of them.

When you're a kid, the worst thing you can hear is the suggestion that you might have twice as many eyes as you should. In retrospect this is less of an insult and more of a superpower.

i'm already aware that this idea has been done in this derby, but I came up with it independently before checking the board and decided to go forth with it. And besides, what better derby than "2" to have a few doubles? Thanks for looking.
