Land of the Rising Sun. Playground of the samurai and the ninja. Kabuki crucible of Pocky and Hello Kitty. The nerd's Zion, and the world's baseball champion. Once an isolated island kingdom, now a global economic and cultural powerhouse: few nations boast a character as defined, spectacular, and resonant as Japan's. We're sure you have a thousand ideas already, so read this week's rules below and get to work.

Japanese text only - and our rules about offensive content still apply. That means you should explain what your Japanese characters say, or if you don't know what they say, accept the risk that the design will be rejected. We're also relying on users to tattle on Japanese text that's obscene, racist, or otherwise in violation of our rules.

No video-game references. Get out of that box and earn your votes some other way. This rule applies to all Derbies until further notice.

Oh, no video game references but nothing about stupid rabbits/turtle/baby creatures. Woot, you should get a grip on your own site.

it will be interesting to see the different directions people go with this one. hopefully there is more thought put into it than koi and sushi. it will also be interesting to see how unintentionally racist certain artists get with stereotypes of japanese features, ie. bunnies with slanted eyes, every character wearing kimonos or gis. i really have high hopes, i hope for something off the wall, an obscure reference perhaps, clever is always good.

which way are you leaning jasneko?

Great theme! Looking forward to this one. Also big thumbs up on the video game ban. I love the idea of doing "until further notice" bans on overused ideas or fallbacks. A little list of what's off limits at the bottom of every theme would really help in getting some fresh ideas going. Koi fish would be another one worth putting on the list for this week.

Got this one up for critiques at Threadless right now. Should I give it a try here instead? What say ye? Is it a "woot" shirt or "threadless" shirt?

OH LORDY LORD!

This is AWESOME! The potentials are endless, especially with the ban on Nintendo. Japanese Game Shows, Iron Chef, Kabuki, etc.

Whoa...

By the way, the CYBERPUB discussion board for this derby is open!

I don't have any specific ideas at the moment... however I'm excited because I've always had a sort of connection with Ja'pan - love Japanese culture/art/food, took Japanese, been to Ja'pan many times, participated in a Japanese program for 2 months overseas, have many many Japanese friends... and in fact, my username is half Japanese ("neko" means cat in Japanese;) So the theme is an appealing one!

I also took Japanese in college because my friend said it was easy. But he was dead wrong! So many stuff to memorize! They have like 3 sets of alphabet to learn, and write! But it was really fun. I still get a kick saying "hotdog" in japanese .

Oh come on Woot! You are making Japanese characters acceptable, but you can't hire a translator for 1 week to make sure of what they say?! hehe!

Sure hope there's some people who speak Japanese on Woot that are willing to comb through every entry to make sure they are all tasteful. How funny would it be for Woot to print some R-rated innuendo?

HalfWheat

I wonder how many people will confuse Japan with China. And if those will get rejected or not.

I think that if entries get up to the fog, Woot will ask the designers to prove what the text says. But I'm sure that people will also be ratting each other out if the text is just wrong, never mind it being offensive.

Wondering if there are Japanese words that translate significantly different in Chinese...since they share some characters.

Yup, it's really challenging with the 2 alphabets and all the kanji. Especially in college, one of my classes was insanely hard. Haven't done anything for a while, I'm going to have to dig out my old notes;)

I love the subject, So much potential. Don't know if my art style will lend itself to the theme very well. Plus thinking of good ideas... that's another one.

My first thought was like "awesome"... which now dissolved itself to "scaffolding" especially with my abysmal votes this past derby.

Maybe time for a week off already.

Munchy Attack If you can find the name of this artist & real song title I'll buy you a daily woot shirt (your choice what day)

Dystopia Dark Lager, Where the Wild Parties at?, B.A. Bearacus, and many more wanted in XXL(PLEASE!!!)

I was thinking more about cultural references than text. Fortune cookies, for example. Which technically are American anyway but are associated with Chinese food rather than Japanese.

Since Japanese kanji are a subset of Chinese characters, any that appear in both languages will pretty much have the same meaning. But I only studied Japanese and not Chinese, so this is only an educated guess.

I'd definitely vote for it over here since it's based on one of my favorite pieces of art. I'd probably buy it over on Threadless, too. I do think it looks a bit like a giant hand randomly sticking up in the water. If you could bend the hand/fingers forward a bit it would simulate the print better and it would also look more like a waving motion.

Part of me wants to tell you to save this for Threadless, but it's totally up to you. Judging by the reaction so far, it looks like it could serve you well here too.

When you see the image code, add pixel measurements like this:

[ img=300x300]

Without the space of course. It may take a little bit of play to get it to resize proportionally without distortion, specially if the image is not a square, but it works well most of the time.

I think it will do better at threadless, hands down.

I do like it, but to be honest I think a lot of people won't. However I'm thinking it depends on what it'll be up against.

I live, I learn, and so aid my end while I believe I'm winning

Dude, you spelled "Konnichiwa" wrong. The last character is supposed to be "ha", not "wa".
