even though i haven't checked the forums or purchased a shirt in a long time, i had to log in just to comment on this...

ramyb, seki... this shirt is awful.

now don't get me wrong, i'm not saying that you're not good artists or that you don't have any SKILL in creating shirts that lots of people would want to wear - your success on this site alone disproves that statement quickly. i AM saying that your lack of TALENT is stunning, and i can't believe that you can even begin to defend yourself with such comments like "this took a lot of time/effort/thought", etc. sure, you can make a design look good, but if the design itself isn't well-thought out, who cares how good the art is?

there are so many amazing things you could have done with this theme, even using the characters you've created; make an actual scene with them instead of laying them in obsessive rows for strangers to "read" off of people's shirts. choose just one of the characters and do something unexpected with him. use a placement for a design that isn't bang in the center of the shirt. utilize some form of a background that isn't an obvious afterthought.

you both can do some good work, but seeing a shirt like this, you wouldn't know it. stop cruising and get serious, stop offending the shirt.woot population with your lack of creativity in design execution, and stop picking and choosing your fights; i dare you to take me on and explain to me why your design should remain the way it is.

edited for spelling.

Re: Shouri

I think the first kanji might be wrong. In the last part (lower-right corner), I think the final downward stroke is supposed to cross the horizontal stroke.

I love the shirt, though! I would totally buy it if the kanji were fixed.

Granted, only the people who can read kanji are going to get the joke. Er, only the people who can read kanji and have seen Animal House

This is genius.

It's the kind of quirky I would wear which overlaps (but not by a large margin, mind you!) with the kind of absurdity which is stereotypical of Japan.

Not only that but the subject material is arguably Japanese.

GMV for sure. Will buy if I have money next week >.<

Re: Shouri

For all the artists out there, when you use pre-made brushes like the big watercolor brush stroke in the background, do you have to re-do it with halftones or can you just leave it as it is? I ask because those kinds of brushes usually have varying shades of the same color and I'm not sure whether Woot can just print it as is with its varying shades (of the same color though) or whether you have to re-do it with halftones or whatever so its printable.

I have no idea if this is the answer you're looking for, but Woot generally won't print gradients, but they will print halftones. There's also a limit on how fine the halftones can be, but no one is really sure of what that might be.

Here's the link I think you were trying to point to:

http://www.j-pop.de/dragonball-z/wallpapers/dragon-ball-z-100.jpg

The dragons are different - facial features are not the same. The claws are different too but you're right in that the placement of the dragons and their respective poses are really similar. If you told me that the Dragonball design was this artist's inspiration - I'd totally believe it. Beyond that, I'm not sure I can say they are the same dragon.

Re: Rising Sun

I really liked your concept here of using Japan's national flower in your design. I think you were trying to use an exaggerated and stylized version of a spider chrysanthemum:

Unfortunately, your choice of the color orange and the fact that this variety of chrysanthemum doesn't really look like a sun, stylized or not, may be a problem.

Perhaps this is a better choice of chrysanthemum:

The color is more akin to the sun in the actual flag and the close-set petals give a better shape, even if you had exaggerated them.

Consequently, your design does resemble food or a sea anemone - both of which take it completely out of the realm of the theme and, I think, your intent. Perhaps you would consider a resub - it's still early in the derby. Just a suggestion...

Re: The Crane's Return of Favor

The design is based off of the famous Japanese folklore, 鶴の恩返し (tsuru no ongaeshi - The Crane's Return of Favor).

There was an elderly couple living in a town. One winter day, when the husband was walking home through the snow, he spotted a crane stuck in a trap. Feeling sorry for it, he let it free. Late that night, a beautiful young girl came knocking at the couple's door. She claimed to have gotten lost and asked to stay for a night, so they let her in.

The stormy snowy days continued, and the young girl took care of the elders and made them happy. Then one day, she asked the husband if she could have some thread to weave some cloth, so he bought some for her. When she was about to begin her weaving, she told them, "Please, never open the door to my working room." After she finished weaving the cloth, she told the husband to go to the city and sell it there. The husband obliged. The cloth was a huge hit due to its immense beauty, and the elderly couple became very wealthy. However, the mystery behind the girl's weaving bugged them until one day, the elderly man opened the door to her room while she was weaving.

Instead of the girl, he saw a withered crane using its own feathers to weave the beautiful fabric. The girl explained that she was the crane that had been saved one winter day by the elderly man. The couple begged her to stay but the saddened girl turned back into a crane and flew away into the sky.

-Translated the story from the Japanese Wikipedia page.

This is why the crane in my design is crying.. it is sad to have to leave the people she cared about. :'( It's hard to see in general, but hopefully the detailed views will help that :x
