Artists should profit from their work. They should not make work for profit. How are you people so unable to think of what is fair for art? Do you not appreciate it enough to think it deserves to have fair principles applied to its production and profit?
I understand where you are coming from, I used to do some photoshop for fun and made my own shirts back in the day. But when you make a competition out of it and have there be a monetary compensation, there are going to be people that take advantage of the system simply because they are greedy and are only in it for the money.
Think about it, according to all the controversy going on, most of the artists that already submit their work aren't getting paid for what they submit anyway since it's the same people winning over and over. I know if I made a design and won, the money would be nice, but I could care less about it, that's what getting a job is for.
Sure you could bring up issues of copyright and what not, but in the end, there should be that sense of pride behind knowing that you designed something others wanted, not, "oh money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money!". There will ALWAYS be people that try to scam their way into making "easy" money, so the best way to combat it is to remove the temptation. Plus, I'm sure they would charge a little less for shirts. :p
