Re: Violet Vampire Vivian Vance

The only reason this wasn't rejected is that it came in at the end of the derby. At that time, the woot guys are busy getting ready to print a shirt and start a new derby, and there is almost no time to get many votes, let alone get into the fog.

Re: Vague Memories

WOOT! Please do the right thing and take this shirt at least out of the fog if you aren't going to take it out of the derby.

I hope if it does win it doesn't sell, and then stays in the reckoning forever. I am so tired of shirts made for 5 year-olds, so make sure you have plenty of kid shirts available. Even more tired of Patrickpens shirts winning just because of his fanbase, and completely flabbergasted at how this thing/his stuff keeps getting votes.

WOOT admins, I am pretty disappointed in you right now. You know this should be rejected.

The volcano looks nice, and the bird looks nice, but honestly the two don't seem to fit together. The bird is all line work, one hue with a little variation in thickness but it definitely looks more stylized and brushed, and the volcano uses halftones and is in a more "real" style.

I just got my first tablet so I have the ability to draw now, I hope to enter a lot of derbies in 2010! Thanks, I have been hearing god things about illustrator, I'm going to check it out.

Re: Go Van Gogh Van!

I love this shirt. I want it just so I can point to it and say "GO, VAN GOGH VAN, GO!

And meh, "a shirt or two with a similar theme exists" isn't grounds for rejection according to clearly established precedent. I also don't see it anywhere in the rules, actually... In any case, if the shirt is somehow erroneously rejected, resubbing with a minor change can be done as per the precedent.

TobiasAmaranth wrote:Vague is not a 'thing', and memories do not start with 'v'

You know, right before this derby, while we were moving, I told my friend as we hauled boxes, "I bet there's going to be a lot of abstract V concepts. I wonder what Woot will accept?"

Apparently abstract V items are ok. Things like Validation, Vague, Velocity, Virulent, Vivacious, Victorian, Villainous, Voluptuous, Vicious. These are all abstract ideas or descriptors that start with V as opposed to literal things like volvanoes or valves. The problem is, Woot did not clarify if they wanted only literal 'objects that start with V', or if all things V, even ideas or concepts, are allowed.

I like the abstract designs because I would have been really sad with a derby full of only vultures or vampires or vespas. Wooters need to make up their minds: do you want everyone to only make designs that take the theme very literally, or do you want people to go outside of the box and stretch to come up with something really odd or different? It seems the community has a hard time picking which they prefer. It's actually rare that I see something totally off theme, no matter how weird it is.

With this design, Vague memories begins with a V, with "vague" being a descriptor and on-topic. I think the panels of the bunny floating in happy land show that his memories are in fact vague. He's not sure what happened to him. I did agree that it is stretching the theme if you're not paying close attention. But a stretch is not a break. I think people are just angry at bunnies... I don't know. As a bystander that's all I see because the design (Wooter's hatred of bunnies aside) is actually very well illustrated. I like many other designs in the derby that aren't bunnies too .

In ending, if Woot specifically disallowed abstract concepts or descriptors that begin with V, then this would have to be taken down. But it appears that they are ok with it. So if they are, then don't vote for it if you don't like it. There's a lot of good stuff to vote for here if you hate bunnies. I understand people being tired of them, but everyone's tired of certain designs. Halftone trees are to me what bunnies are to a lot of you. But, some people love them, so it's ok with me if they win. Just vote for what you like and all will be well with the world.

AdderXYU wrote:Why isn't it?

If you are voting for something knowing it is not on theme, you are saying the theme doesn't matter. You are saying that someone who follows the rules doesn't deserve to win more than someone who has not done so. I don't care what woot says. This is not on theme. You know it, and you voted. And you wonder why people don't respect you.

I don't have an issue with designs that haven't printed elsewhere being sub'd here (though I think redoing a woot entry is the height of cancellation). So long as they are on theme. This is not on theme. Whether this was done before or done for this derby, the design was created without even considering the theme until after. And that is the thing that is wrong.

Hmm, no, I agreed the theme was being stretched, not broken. There is a difference.

To me, this is on theme if you pay close attention to the imagery. As I said to Tobias, I was wondering if Woot would allow such entries. An abstract concept that is characterized by a word that begins with V is still something that begins with a V. Woot did not say it was not allowed, so I'm assuming it is allowed. That is all I'm trying to explain.

This design is a very roundabout interpretation of what Woot asked for, but it is using a very obvious V reference. There's quite a few shirts that take a less direct approach to the theme. You always ask for creativity. Well? Or, did you really want nothing but literal shirts? If you did only want that, then that's not very creative.

Also, this is directly from the derby write-up:

"Flip through your dictionary until you find one or more promising images or concepts that start with V, then go to town."

Read closely. This line in the derby write-up means this design is on theme. Vague is a concept beginning with the letter V. The rabbit's clearly illustrated foggy (read: vague) memories make this design very well tied to the title, and thus, the theme.

How on earth can you tell that the memories are vague? It is an illustration... as I said to me, these images of the bunnies dream seem very very BOLD.

The frames of the bunny in swirly happy carrot land seem that he doesn't quite remember _everything_ that happened. Some are bold, some are not bold. He has a few clear memories but some that are not clear...hence, vagueness of memory does apply.

Definitions of vague:

1. not clearly or explicitly stated or expressed: vague promises.
2. indefinite or indistinct in nature or character, as ideas or feelings: a vague premonition of disaster.
3. not clear or distinct to the sight or any other sense; perceptible or recognizable only in an indefinite way: vague shapes in the dark; vague murmurs behind a door.
4. not definitely established, determined, confirmed, or known; uncertain: a vague rumor; The date of his birth is vague.
5. (of persons) not clear or definite in thought, understanding, or expression: vague about his motives; a vague person.
6. (of the eyes, expression, etc.) showing lack of clear perception or understanding: a vague stare.

Plus, if we're going to aruge title, how about Vibrant memories of alien Visitors? That is still on theme with the derby and the image.

The image also contains Vegetables..and Visions.. Also, a Vicissitude! Definition 3 from Dictionary.com: successive, alternating, or changing phases or conditions (such as the rabbit's apparent transformation into a giant lazer-eyed monster.

I actually wish Woot would cool it with the Vague themes... -scratches head-
