This one is nice, but how many of these are we going to see in this Derby?

Exactly... which directly explains my sadly rejected submission...

Re: Sherlock of Oz

In the book, the flying monkeys do not live with in the witch's castle, and only serve her when summoned by the magic cap, good for only three uses. They weren't there when she died. They carried Dorothy to the castle and split. IIRC, they also didn't wear little outfits, but I could be wrong.

So strictly speaking, while this is a cute design, this is a mashup of a book and a movie, not of two books. If that matters - which, Woot derby rigor being what it is, it probably doesn't.

We are all daft sometimes, I'll be more than happy to shed some light. The design is a birdbomb holding a olive branch. The bird bomb is a mashup of war and peace.
Dove=peace Bomb=war birdbomb= war and peace
The crown on his head is representative of "The prince" by Machiavelli. Peace to all and war to some.

Re: Treas.Isl./Finn/Hyde - Mashed Potato Mash-Up

Took mash-up literally and made a mashed-potato sculpture incorporating Treasure Island (skull w/ eye patch), Huck Finn (boy with hat and stick lounging), and Mr. Hyde (psychotic looking man in a hat with peas for eyes).

Inspired by the literal idea of a "mash-up" and my young nieces & nephew that are visiting and spend more time playing with their food than eating it!

Hope you all like it!

I had higher hopes for this, but came out alright for my first try at a derby and creating something in such a short time-frame. Anyway, would appreciate any tips/advice/criticisms/etc.

Re: POE / WONDERLAND

Madness isn't so bad when you have friends to share it with. Various characters belonging to Edgar Allan Poe, as well as the author himself, having a tea party with characters from 'Alice In Wonderland' and 'Through the Looking Glass'. How many of them can you name? :D

I think it's fair to use memorable movie images to communicate the book ideas. Sherlock Holmes never wore a deerstalker in the books but that's as iconic as he is now.

Everyone has a different mental image of the characters and places in these books, so it makes sense to find some common ground.

Love your style of art. Great clean lines. No wasted strokes.

I'd change...
I think I'd reframe this shirt so that it stretches more horizontally and less vertically. Maybe surround it with some Greek scrolling to add a bit more to it. There's a lot of empty space below. Add some Greek ships? Just needs a little more. Not sure what.

Great looking shirt though.

epic awesomeness.

really, you two are just brilliant together. This is truly one of the best designs I've seen in my time here.

I would love to see this as a huge, all-over print, or at least as big as could possibly be printed. I think that would showcase the amazing detail in the design.

definitely voted!!!

Re: THE CALL OF CTHULHU / MOBY DICK

This was a quite a challenge. This went through 4 different shirt colors. Cthulhu was green, grey, and brown. Ahab was orange, green, black, and blue. I tried tons or things. Drakxxx'sxs's concept that he posted in the thread had a red Ahab just to point him out. Some people mentioned that red actually would be cool. Given the colors I was already using, that made a good contrast so I just went with it. And it was the only thing that worked. Every other combination I tried just turned into a mess. This way, even at a distance you can tell it's not just a "cool squid thing" but there's some dude about to get him some dinner!

Is that the Jabberwocky as Satan? Love it!

If this is a mash-up of Dante's Inferno, then that might be a 3-headed Jabberwocky standing in for Cerberus from the Third Circle of Hell.
