I was going for a sketchy rough blue print feel - I hope it didn't take the sketchiness too far.

No way - it looks dead-on to me. And I LOVE that you included the optional frequency thingummie for "Martian silicone-based life forms". Lol!

I still don't see why this one isn't doing too well.

Its definitely in my top 3 favorite in this derby.

I like it even better than my own entry.

Would you kindly...

thanks, I'm a little bummed, too, but I think it's the intensity of the colors... kinda looks like a kid's shirt, which, with the beer, is a little disturbing I'll be trying a more sophisticated color scheme next time. I am happy with the concept, but don't have time this week to resub.

What causes Golf Balls to always find the water hazards? Well a long time ago, a clan of Viking raiders set to oar, in search, to find and punish Loki. But Loki tricked them and turned them into Viking Gremlins, dividing up their forces, and condemned their souls to eternal clubbing by their arch rivals - “The Scots.” Forever stuck inside, “Golf Balls,” their hearts yearn for the open water to again raid and plunder. And how do the dimples work, you ask? This is were the dimples come into play: Golf Ball Dimples are really portals were the Vikings thrust out their oars whenever a water hazard is present and using the wind and their paddles as wings, - cause the Golf Ball to hook or slice for the water. But the curse grew even bigger than Loki's intentions, when the world adopted the sport of Golf. This is just a little known fact!

The graphic is pretty simple on this one because it's was so darned hard making the sentences work correctly.

Those of us students who can write a decent sentence hate the horrific grammar of our peers just as much as our professors. We're the ones they always want to proofread their work. XD if my shirt does win, I'll be sorely tempted to give one to one particular friend who always asked for proofreading but then felt insulted at how many marks I'd made!

Re: Funny Bones

I don't know DianaSprinkle, but it seems illogical for her to have copied it deliberately. She's been on Woot for some time, she knows how it works. She knows that people will pick up on similar shirts. So why would she deliberately copy a shirt and submit it, knowing it would be rejected? That doesn't make sense.

Logically, she didn't know. Whether she subconsciously saw the other shirt, I don't know. But I've certainly seen people closely reproduce ideas they couldn't possibly have seen. It happens. So while I condemn plagiarism, coincidences - even close coincidences - do sometimes happen. Very possible she's entirely innocent.

tgentry wrote:The theme was How Do They Work. It's pretty clear cut: "For this derby we want you to show us how things work OR, in the event of your not knowing exactly, how you THINK they work." Does this design show how the TARDIS works, or even how the designer thinks it works? It's pretty clear that it doesn't. There was plenty of room for showing how the TARDIS works, the designer could have done a cut away and just showed gears or something, and that would have been enough to fit the theme. I don't see how you can look at a design "abstractly" or "aesthetically" and have it fit the theme when the theme is SO clear cut and literal. It's spelled out very clearly. I'd be seriously disappointed if this got printed over entries that were actually on topic. I could have dumped a half dozen designs on this derby and explained it away that it "abstractly" met the theme guidelines. Hopefully that's not a precedent woot is willing to set.

aesthetically- its a damn good shirt, and sort of does fit the theme- Davinci sketches did sort of, at least how i understand it, explained how his invetions would work and stuff- they way plans/outlines/blueprints would...
and this particular shirt uses that idea- and looks alot better than some of the shirts that fit perfectly witht the theme...i think its important to consider both- aesthetics and relevency...and whether or not it will sell, and this shirt will sell if it is printed...in this particular case- it works just fine without neccessarily adhereing exactly to the theme-but whether it does or not changes from one persons opinion to the next

odysseyroc wrote:The classic comics style derby was the same way. In the end, people who worked to stay on theme were punished by non-rejections of stuff that wasn't even trying to be on topic.

The alternative is the pointillism derby, though, where the brilliant salt and pepper rhino shirt was rejectionated for the spoonic reason that the shakers were not done in a pointillistic style. Because apparently literalizing the theme was off-topic?

Perhaps I'm biased by not being a designer, but as someone who spends more time wearing clothes than arguing about them, I'd rather see a good shirt I'd wear that has a mildly orthogonal relationship to the theme print than an on-topic piece of crap like the vomit cloud.

So then you think that if a design looks nice it doesn't need to be on-theme? Seriously?

Look, if the theme were Water Gardens and I did a picture of the TARDIS in the impressionist style of Renoir (with the reasoning that Renoir did paintings of water gardens) do you think that would be on-topic? Even kind-of? That's what your argument is boiling down to, in addition to it looking nice so the rules shouldn't really be applied to it. When has that EVER been a justification for not rejecting something? Is anyone at woot even looking at this?!? If I look at this shirt I should be able to tell how the thing works (whether it be the real way or a fanciful way). That WAS the theme, which couldn't have been worded any clearer. This is literally an object sitting there, revealing not a single thing about how it functions.

It seems woot is doing an "anything goes" approach to this derby, so the entry will probably get by. It is a nice looking shirt and will sell well. Still I feel for anyone that actually played by the rules that will be edged out if/when this entry wins. Since there's not really a valid argument in favor of it not being rejected and I'm just repeating myself, I'll leave it that and let woot run their business.
