Staff

The air smells sweet, the sun shines longer, and there are actual living animals out chirping and frolicking. Spring is officially in the air, so for this week's Derby give us your take on the season of life: new beginnings, rebirth, April showers, May flowers, baby animals, spring cleaning, or those tasty Spring Mix bags of salad. Think pastels and happiness. Yeah, we've done this before, but blame nature; this happens every year, y'know. And yes, we know, Spring can even mean bunnies. Get it out of your systems now, because we're locking them down after this. Now for the rest of the rules:

No text.

No video games.

No Star Wars.

No depictions of Muhammad Ali. A totally random rule from a totally random Woot staffer totally randomly-named Russ.

I was so hoping to do Muhammad Ali in a bunny suit, wearing springs on his feet, but I guess that will have to wait for the long-anticipated "M" derby.

I'm thinking of doing a bouquet of flowers made entirely of coil springs. Maybe a bee landing on it with a coil spring for a stinger.

Seems a little obvious to me though. Anybody know if this has been done?

Ali wearing a bunny suit, playing Star Wars Lego on a Wii. Where the whole thing is made out of little tiny letters.

...just sayin...

Although I plan to work on something new, I think I'd also like to resubmit my Earth Day submission. Is there any rule against that?

Do jackalopes count as rabbits?

Not feeling very inspired by this weeks theme, and I've got a busy weekend, so I'll probably sit this one out.

Hope everyone has a good derby!

Skipping again this week.
I wont stay up all night doing something good just to know an efing badly drawn bunny (or 'cute' animal) is gonna win.
Thinking about making a daily entry better

Had and idea! It should be cute and fun - may not post until Sunday : (

quicky preview

It's the sun and earth pushing off a blanket of snow and yawning.

Done in 10 minutes with mouse.

Yes, that's a nice spring idea Lagbert! It's always good to draw things really rough but color first.

Despite a lot of my recent entries having a spring theme I somehow have another three ideas... but no idea which one to pick.

I believe resubmissions must include some reworking of the design. Woot is very wooty about how much reworking is actually necessary (but I'd recommend doing more than changing the colors).

Good luck!

I like the textures, but the colors are too drab for spring imo

Ooh, I think I can work with this theme. Maybe a bunny of some sort. In pastel.

So I have a question, if anyone has the answer or could direct me to a more appropriate venue, I'd be very much obliged...

The photoshop brush tool is so very fond of smoothing lines, even at max hardness, by adding slightly lighter tones at the edges of the stroke. I can only imagine this would cause problems in a print-ready file, as they're looking for layers made up of exclusively one shade of the color, not every shade between it and white, right? Is the only solution to use the pencil tool or Illustrator? Or do they have a way of dealing with it?

vzfamily, what do you mean? He doesn't blink... :p

Haha, thanks bass'y. ^__^

Dust Bunny is trying to persuade me to let him back this week, he wants to bring some of his friends along in the war against spring cleaning... but I think I have to go with a different idea.

Oh man, thanks bassanimation. I wish BootsBoots would stop making me wish I were BootsBoots.

Oh, and note to self: Step *one* is google keywords for your design, step *two* is to sketch it out three or four times. Especially on a recycled theme...

How are they gonna deal with that? I can only imagine I won't be the last person to draw up a design which was submitted last time around.
