Well....this was extremely well done, but yeah...merhh PedoBear on a shirt = no no. Other than that, dayum, I love the wall texture! I looked everywhere for a good one to use and I couldn't round one up.

Re: Prehistoric Duo

From the Calvin and Hobbes 10th Anniversary Book:

"Second, commercial products rarely respect how a comic strip works. A wordy, multiple-panel strip with extended conversation and developed personalities does not condense to a coffee mug illustration without great violation to the strip's spirit. The subtleties of a multi-dimensional strip are sacrificed for the one-dimensional needs of the product. The world of a comic strip ought to be a special place with its own logic and life. I don't want some animation studio giving Hobbes an actor's voice, and I don't want some greeting card company using Calvin to wish people a happy anniversary, and I don't want the issue of Hobbes's reality settled by a doll manufacturer. When everything fun and magical is turned into something for sale, the strip's world is diminshed. 'Calvin and Hobbes' was designed to be a comic strip and that's all I want it to be. It's the one place where everything works the way I intend it to. "

"My strip is about private realities, the magic of imagination, and the specialness of certain friendships. Who would believe in the innocence of a little kid and his tiger if they cashed in on their popularity to sell overpriced knickknacks that nobody needs? Who would trust the honesty of the strip's observations when the characters are hired out as advertising hucksters? If I were to undermine my own characters like this, I would have taken the rare privilege of being paid to express my own ideas and given it up to be an ordinary salesman and a hired illustrator. I would have sold out my own creation. I have no use for that kind of cartooning. "

"And making the whole issue even more absurd, when I didn't license, bootleg 'Calvin and Hobbes' merchandise sprung up to feed the demand. Mall stores openly sold T-shirts with drawings illegally lifted from my books, and obscene or drug-related shirts were rife on college campuses. Only thieves and vandals have made money on 'Calvin and Hobbes' merchandise."

Once again, no respect.

Also, where's the parody here? Tigers and humans both existed together, so therefore this is parody? It's nothing but one more shoehorning of someone else's ideas into a theme. It's not parody and wouldn't hold up if anyone cared to bring it to court.

Re: Prehistoric Duo

As a big C&H fan I always wanted some kind of C&H t-shirt, movie, cartoon, stuff animals, etc. But I highly respect Bill Watterson's integrity when it comes to his work, so much so that I wouldn't support any kind of unofficial knock-off. Parody is fine and if this had something to say about the original work I think I'd be ok with it, but it just seems like it's relying on the popularity of the source without saying much about it or adding enough of an original element to justify it. Maybe it's that it's the two characters just posed there. Also they are pretty protective of the brand and those characters look a little too much like the original IMO. I'd be surprised if this made it past rejections, but stranger things have happened.

Cave Painting
All you need is a surface, some blood, and your fingers!

There was some talk about this in the pre-thread. If this entry TRULY upset, offends, or discomforts you greatly, then please leave a comment and let me know. If too many are uneasy by this, I will delete it within my 24 hour time frame. And please don't lie about it, taking advantage of my consideration for others feelings.

I like the way the shirt color/design colors make it seem like you're peering into a cave interior. You've obviously channelled a prehistoric fast food mascot.

Love C&H, and the idea & your texturing is all really good.

It's a strongly defended property though, just as tgentry says. I'm sure I can remember a strip with a sabre-toothed Hobbes in it too... one of the mesozoic era strips... so that might further complicate things.

Spanner. Works. Gah, sorry. :-)

I also believe I have seen a C&H strip in which Calvin was portrayed as a caveman and Hobbes as a Saber-toothed tiger. I'll do some digging, but I'm sure if I don't, someone will find it.

If this is true then I'll gladly take it down. This isn't something I remember seeing and I thought it was a fun take on the theme and I did a pretty extensive search before working on the design to see if it existed elsewhere and didn't find anything similar, but I wouldn't be entirely surprised if it did.

Here's some support for what others are mentioning about Hobbes as a saber-tooth tiger:

I remember there being a more obvious example, but can't find it so maybe I imagined it.
