mindputtee wrote:I was really disappointed when I read the theme this week too. I personally enjoy memes and find them amusing, but due to their transient nature would never ever buy an article of clothing with them on it.

So, that being said.

My idea for this week is to show a number of old discarded memes gathering dust. I was thinking to include a badger with a mushroom, a lolcat, and a hamster from the hamster dance all looking sad and lonely with cobwebs on them.

That sounds like an excellent idea!

Other old memes to consider: Leek Spin, Pancake Bunny

I'm not sure that lolcats have been discarded, instead I just got an image of an overworked/slave-driven lolcat sweatshop - getting paid in sliders rather than real cheeseburgers:
"You, over tehre[sic], lime back on head nao!"
"You made those cookies, now eated[sic] them!"

Just for grins, I'll float my latest sketch. I believe the text qualifies as essential... do you think the design stands a chance of surviving the Rejectionator?

I like this one. I feel like it could probably be good for those who don't know the memes as well.
Someone care to explain the Picard (that's who that is right?)/four aces part? Not familiar with that meme.

Dangit... now I don't know what to do. I have pedobear in my design but the talk here leads me to believe that woot might reject it for that? But he's a meme... maybe they'll let it slide this week? Maybe I should replace him with a badger or advice dog....

15 minutes to the Meme-a-thon, and I am fearful. Perhaps I can find a survivalist who will let me camp out in his cellar for a week.

Even at this early on, I am going to say: WORST DERBY EVER.

"If drinking is bitter, change yourself to wine." -Rainer Maria Rilke

"Champagne is a very kind and friendly thing on a rainy night." -Isak Dinesen

"There are many ways to the recognition of truth; Burgundy is one of them." -Isak Dinesen

At this point, it is. There is some good artwork, but it is wasted on the topic.

Totally random shirt idea for anyone who wishes to run with it--Involving no lolcats:

Amber Lamps and Vince Shlomi playing Chess on a Roller Coaster.

Title of shirt: You Just Lost!

I would love to see EBM with "hide your husbands" and then...something else.

Honestly, I don't see this being a great derby.

It looks like Vader and Ackbar are reacting to Picard's hand, but since most people read left to right, Picard's dialogue is the last thing they'll look at. You might try inverting it so Picard is seated on the other side of the shirt.

It's pretty great, I got all the memes for this one instantly and, despite my dreading this theme, I would probably have to get this one if the final product held up to the promise of this sketch.

I'm trying to find the fast forward button, but am having trouble locating it. Certainly woot wouldn't have created a derby such as this without giving the rest of us a means to bypass it and just go straight to next week.
Hrm...I'll keep looking for it...

Have you tried scanning at a high dpi like 300? Scanning in greyscale as opposed to black and white helps too (unless your drawing is in color of course). I have no idea what your settings are so I don't know if this helps you at all or not lol. But I hope it does! Good luck!

At this rate you could show up on Wednesday afternoon with something good and be okay.

Ohhh boy. :p I'm not over the moon with what I submitted, but you're missing out on the full experience if you don't enter every week. This makes 33 straight derbies for me. Meme pile-up be damned, I didn't want to break my streak.

If woot is serious about enforcing its "commentary on pop culture" parameter, it's going to have to reject pretty much every design so far.

To aid the moderators, we've updated the rules. You must list the memes you're referencing. See the original Derby post for details.

So...I think I have an idea that might even be kind of considered a "commentary on the state of pop culture" But I can't draw well enough for it to work...Anyone who actually has artistic abilities and is interested just IM me

If this isn't consider part of todays "POP CULTURE" I dont know what is.

I really wish I could draw. When I read this challenge all I could picture was a shirt with this "farmville" looking field on in with a few little "mafia" men dressed in black begging each other do work for them.

I think people would buy into it.

I don't think they're accepting just any pop culture stuff are they? I mean, Bieber is very much current pop culture, but they said no to him as a meme... *shrugs*

I searched through most of the memes on the know your meme website. I did come up with a couple of things but not much.

You could Obamanize (the Hope poster) the Dancing Baby who would be wearing a Halo or a star wars helmet, or you could replace the baby head with a big yellow smiley saying LOL

I dont know this one is a tough one. I am hoping to see some clever and fun shirts.

So is this a Meme Derby or a Know Your Meme Derby, cause I'm not convinced that site is the be all end all of what is and isn't a Meme.

Also, I'd like to late request a Milhouse shirt
