In the rules: "(we're calling this Derby cross-hatching so 50 people didn't immediately start sketching cracked eggs before reading this far). Using lines of varying length, angle, thickness, closeness, etc. artists could create the appearance of depth, volume, brightness, and color. Now we want you to do it."

I think it implies that you don't actually need to do "cross" hatching, only hatching... ie. using lines of varying length, angle, thickness, closeness, etc. to create depth, volume, brightness and color...

Like they said, the reason the derby was labeled "CROSS hatching" was to avoid the numerous cracked egg submissions that would have undoubtedly been posted.

Thank you fishbiscuit! When I decided to have them playing chess, the pieces were something I was particularly looking forward to drawing =)

I think that people are ridiculous and don't know that cross hatching is a type of hatching. And the rules don't say it has to be cross hatched, just every line has to be the same color

I love to draw with hatches. Cross, single lines, broken lines, etc. This is a frog I made for my personal collection a while ago. So this is the perfect opportunity to put it on people's chests and/or bellies.

Enjoy!

Re: Hoshi Encounter

On a starless night, the young samurai came upon an inexplicable light. Into the forest he crept. Sword in hand, heart in mouth, he made his way closer. A rustle of leaves. A twig snap.
"Mebeep," he heard someone say.

Doesn't Threadless have a 90 day holding period on designs? What if Threadless decided to print this? They have been printing a lot of 2.5s lately, so I wouldn't rule it out.

Are there ways to wave the holding period on designs? Seems like many designers don't adhere to it, so I feel there is something I am unaware of. I dislike waiting out the allotted time frame, so if anyone has any knowledge on this, then please let me know.

Re: A Visitor

I'm pretty much always at a loss when the theme is open. Doodles usually turn into scarecrows or gargoyles. Honestly it's unintentionally like "Underworld" mixed with "Pottery Training."

In any case, I don't particularly enjoy DIGITAL hatching. Pen and paper is fine but something about it with a tablet doesn't click with me. Hopefully some of you enjoy it nonetheless. Thanks.

Re: Thunderbird (resub)

I thought the original problem was with the overly filled in areas of solid color. Like the birds head. May be the added detail will allow this one to go through.y

It was discussed in the prederby thread that you can outline, just fill in with linework.

I'm no artist, so I'm not really sure what's the best or proper way to do anything, but that is just how i understand it.

nice design though, regardless.

No. Yes.

Re: Hamlet: Goth or Emo?

Went with a classic character from Shakespeare and played with a sorta Edward Gorey take. To answer the titles question, I think Hamlet was the Emo kid while Yorick was Goth! *rimshot*
As Hamlet would have said it (in so many words),
"Yeah Yorick! I knew him! He was so Goth, Horatio!"

Here's a link to 16x20 detail.

The thing is that when you are hatching with graphite, the texture of the graphite will show the hatch. However, when things are done in computer with only one color allowed (or even if you are scanning original graphite then make it one color with photoshop), hatching same area multiple times will only result in one solid color.

Re: She's Waiting

Of the 2 I prefer this one. I wonder if the green one would work if you tones the black to a green. Just a thought. But love your style and this is lovely design and makes think of Tim Burton or more goth themed illos.

I agree with lmoughty. I wonder how this would pop with a possible pink or orange on a rasberry or green. I definitely would consider playing with it a resub because the design quite beautiful and striking!
