Nightshooter wrote:I mostly agree with you, this has no business being in this competition. But, I don’t think this is the same as "the epic begins". That one at least mostly fit the derby.
I love turtles and the TMNT, but this is ridicules to try and say TMNT is part of India in any way...

I think you're missing the point. I don't believe that the artist intended to imply that TMNT is in any way connected to India. Looking at the posted rules, this very easily fits into the derby theme:

Rules wrote:"Anyway, we want to see shirts inspired by incredibly ornate and detailed Indian art, art full of "voluptuous feeling" and "sensuousness." Whether you're inspired by sculpture, painting, the intricate patterns of henna art, shimmering textiles, the rich history, or simply the natural beauty of the subcontinent, let it all out."

See? "...Inspired by incredibly ornate and detailed Indian art..."

Nowhere does it say that every entry must contain a blatant reference to India. It's about style. Even in the Pre-Derby thread, this was said from a Woot staffer:

llandar wrote:Personally, I'd much rather see designs from people who read up on a particular style of Indian art and try to create something using the techniques, rather than "I'll just draw this thing that everybody knows is in India."

So there you go. Quite frankly, as pretty as some of the other entries are, I'd be less inclined to wear them due to the fact that I don't really feel the need to wear something that screams "INDIA!!" as a country. This, however, I would consider wearing because it's A) Something I relate to and like from my childhood, and B) Because it's an interesting style that isn't done very often with pop culture.

The rules state that only people who have previously bought from woot can vote, sorry. When you do find something you want, text will appear above the image. Saying 'I'd want one'

Re: Heaven Above, Earth Below (Or: Lotus)

WHOA. I woke up to a lot of votes. O_O;; Man, that's better than a cup of coffee. Thanks to everyone for the compliments (including one from my mom, HAH)! I'm glad to hear that you guys like the design. -:]

@fungusamongus/chunkydesign: I agree about the design being a bit high, actually. For anatomical purposes, I was worried that the lotus would end up too low on a person's chest, and (for women, at least) it would ride below the bust awkwardly; but, I think I overcompensated a bit much. Also, when I placed it on the template, I didn't see the edge of the collar. It's a good lesson learned for my future designs. Thanks, big time, for the feedback! -:]

@carmelpixie: Haha, I went with the pinkest pinks I could find! Glad you like it, and thanks for the vote. -x]

@paigeg: I'm ... mildly obsessed with the Asphalt color. It's the "richest" gray shirt I've ever seen, and I love it for that. -x] Thanks for the vote, though! Worst comes to worst, we can always form the "Asphalt Gang" and go raiding local eateries in our awesome Woot shirts. -:D

My brother actually wanted me to print it on Creme (same colors as above). Would anyone have been as interested? (Just curious. For feedback purposes.)

I also like this entry. The details are really cool and nicely done. You have to really look to see all of the clever bits that are hiding in the flourishes. Not everyone can relate to an Indian concept, but this is something people can connect with.

I concur with this. The dozens upon dozens of variations on the Henna, elphants, and elphants made of henna are nice and all, but there are only a few entries that I would likely wear in this derby, and this is one of them, because it captures the idea of art from India/the henna style and it relates to me.

thanks! (o;

Scheherazade is a story from the Persian Empire, which distinctly and explicitly shared a border with India. The two are not one in the same, ffs.

Re: Henna

This is astonishing and amazing, but I too think that the off-center placement is really detrimental. The image is too far from center, and not far enough. It just looks as if there were really sloppy registration when they were printing the shirt. This is far too beautiful a piece of artwork to damage its beauty by having it off-center. I hope that you/woot will center this design before printing it.

Re: Unfair Advantage

The derby is a tricky old beast. You don't want to create something too obvious, you want to hit the theme from an unusual angle and be unexpected - but when you're finished the connection to the theme might be less clear or more personal than you wish it was, however much it was responsible for inspiring it.

That's one of the things I love about Woot though. The theme is the jumping off point and you don't know where you'll end up. Right before the theme gets announced I know that 24 hours later I'll have made something that I would never have planned or drawn otherwise. Sometimes it's great, sometimes it's really not, but when you put in the effort at least you always learn something.

50 straight weeks since my first entry... still got a lot to learn, but it's doing me good. :^)

Sweet colors and shading and it uses a lot of printable space in a very natural, and eye-pleasing way.
