Above are some examples of a darker artist. Also look at the 1800's Dante's inferno illos for examples.
Thanks for the link! There are some on the page you linked to that do bear a resemblance to this shirt (and some of the other less obviously-woodcut-feelings shirts in this derby). I guess I always expect a certain level of stylization to a woodcut, which this doesn't have - but that doesn't mean this couldn't be done as a woodcut. I think I might save my votes for the more distinctly woodcut-looking shirts, since that's the derby topic & we get great illustration entries all the time. But I do see your point.
Re: Nestng Hen
I think I want china with this on it.
bluetuba wrote:I don't have a problem with the artwork or relevance to the theme for once, but it's not really original. Swirly flowing abstract type design is another well known Ramy trope.
I remember some fish and some headphones...
Re: Lionpowered
You're totally getting the "whimsy" vote from me. I love your textures, too.
bassanimation wrote:This fellow looks pretty distinguished! Awesome character, SG. I think you really nailed the woodcut look too. +1!
I completely disagree. It doesn't have the heavy ink spots, scratchy lines, or uneven distribution from the pressing of the block. And it's just a bunny dressed like a Mexican badass so there's really no concept either.
Re: Find the Fish
I realize that that 3rd color you listed is the shirt color, but in the future you may not want to include a non-ink color or you may get a undeserved rejection.
Re: Imagination Takes Flight
I really like this design and was also quite surprised to see it was a RamyB. Well done for breaking out of your typical style, it turned out very well!
As a dog owner and lover... I'd buy it. My dog always howls/barks/twitches in his dreams, and this could very well be what's going on inside his head.
Re: Hooot
this. is. awesome.

Put 'art woodcut' into google search. The top results will all be complicated designs. I think the reason people think simple when they hear wood cut is because they are now used to photos instead of carvings for everyday images. In reality woodcuts were as complicated as the knife and hardness of wood allowed (well, and skill of artist, but we'll gloss over that part here). Soft woods would have less ability to take small detail, while being easier to carve. balance was needed since soft wood also broke after fewer prints on a press. I think what you are thinking of when you here woodcut are inlays. And even those get complicated, and more colorful!

Yeah, no kidding. Though I think this little guy would have stabbed whomever took his leg. It was probably a shark... a very stabbed shark.
Re: Dreams
A vote from me! I think it's darling!
Re: Gallows Humor
Heey, lets nitpick. When illustrators created woodcuts the lines were kept flush with the outer bits and were what got inked, in a way it was an early negative. In this image the ink is between the lines, not used on the lines. If it was the opposite maybe a non-gray shirt color could have been used. There, now someone has nitpicked in the thread of someone who... oh wait you do print often. Well in the thread of one who goes unflamed. I like the subject matter- :D
Re: Blue Whales Wood Cut
Here's an image of blue whales rendered in the cunky-colored style often found in wood cut stampings. Two colors on royal.
Re: Bravo!
I think you meant this to be on a black shirt.. But it doesn't display that way.
Re: Eucaleaptus
It's a pun!

I think it was originally going to be a wanted poster, but no text rule got added....

A little different tone than my other entries. I hope everyone still digs it!
hahahaaaaaa, ridiculous
Re: After Midnight
Re: Swift Blade
Awesome art; hate the color. sorry.
Numbers have been deleted to conform to No Text rule. What time is it? Bring the noise!
Re: What time is it?
I really, really like this, and I agree, I think grids can work on a shirt, but I think what throws me off is the actual shirt being white. It may look better as the light green shirt with a white outline around the edge panel? Just a thought.
Misskari wrote:I certainly respect your opinion, but I've come to kinda dig grids on a shirt. I had another shirt with a rectangular design print and it worked better than I thought. Or maybe I'm just trying to pimp my instructable on how to make a t-shirt into hangable art, again. ;)
I don't believe that woman's a mother...
I'm not sure why this is so funny, but I love it! I want one!
Re: Too Close...
I'm really excited about this design. I love the story of Icarus. I tried several different color combinations but kept coming back to black on Grass... If anyone has an Idea of a color combo they'd prefer I'm open to suggestions. Thanks everyone!
AdderXYU wrote:As always, similar shirts exist Same color on color, similar styles.
It's a black bull on a red shirt, sure, but I disagree about the style. And I'd much rather have this shirt. Very much hoping this one prints. But then, I'm a taurus.
Re: Baby Blue
This shirt was inspired by my own little boy who at the moment has croup. He is a very blue little boy. I hope this one inspires you all. I did it from the heart this time.

mrwednesday wrote:I'm really not understanding the raves for this design. It looks nice, sure, but there's nothing particularly amazing about the concept. Things coming out of the pages of books are well covered in the shirt world. ramy has already submitted one or two in the past and there are many others out there. It also strays very little from many of his past work other than he had to make it look like a woodcut.
I just feel that he did a good job in making it look woodcut and he stayed on topic, which is something he is most often accused of not doing. I don't see glaring design errors, like lighting issues or missing shadows.....(of course I should throw in here that I am not an artist, so sometimes I don't see those issues until I see them pointed out in the comments--then I can't unsee them, lol) I understand that you don't like him, never will, etc, etc. I have been around long enough to hear the stories of what may or may not have gone on at certain places. But just because a few people say that this particular shirt is well-done of him, doesn't mean that there is no other shirt anywhere out there that could have a similar concept. It simply means that....we liked the shirt design. ;)
Appreciate the positive comment, jbb04. Cheers.

Ah this is really nice looking! I like the way you've done the owl.
Wow. This reminds me of a painting my parents got when we were living in Spain. It is a bull- painted entirely of bull's blood with white pigment for the horns. I would buy 3. And then log on as my husband and buy 3 more so the whole regular and extended family can sport it. Hello sentimentality on a t-shirt.
