Its based a Celtic eternal knot (if you wanted to know that). Each set of cars could be on opposite sides of the track, if you wanted to see it that way. This is because the sets of cars are all on there at the same time (at least that's how I thought of it) rather than imagining it as the path of one set of cars.
The front car on the right side is going under the track. I drew it slightly smaller to try and show that. I could draw part of it under the track... which it is too late to do now and you'll just have to use your imagination :P
The top part of the track can be imagined as twisting either direction depending on how you look at it, so those cars could go over or under the track (they're supposed to go under).
Oh geez I'm gonna draw a diagram of it when I come back from work, can't explain it. Trust me though, I did think about this while drawing it. They DO go in a continuous motion... according the original sketch before I scanned it in and desaturated it.
