I like the car. It reminds me of the ones from the film "Sleeper"

So what's with the two things next to the car? Is it a squished person or a droid or debris or what? It's a bit too small for me to make out.

This makes my third Robbie Lee shirt. Coincidentally, I'm wearing one of my others right now.

For anybody who's wondering: 株式会社 = Corporation

So this means Corporation Robot, taking over the country.

Or burning all the trees in its path.

If giant robots are your thing.

Strangely enough, this absolutely applies to me. I guess I'm in for one.

Although this wasn't really on theme, it was also the best design in the derby. I'm conflicted about that, but since it did print, I'm sure as hell buying it. Congrats, Robbie. Your giant robot shirts are always a welcome addition to my wardrobe.

I'd buy this shirt if the robot looked cooler.
It looks like a cheesy American design not a cool anime style mech. *meh*

I learned an important lesson today. as long as your design is pretty it don't matter if your on theme or not, just come up with some convoluted excuse of how its sorta on theme and your gold!

dear Woot wright up person, would you please go punch the rejection person in the face for all us who wanted cyberpunk shirts!

If the rejectionator were on the ball, there would only be 10 or so shirts to vote on.

Nekkochan wrote:Judging by the vote counts, this derby theme got a great big ol' "I don't care" from a lot of artists and wooters, so maybe its lack of cyberpunkness actually worked in its favor. I agree with whoever said it had a good 50's SF feel - so not cyberpunk, but at least a cool shirt.

Well, there were artists who did care enough to really dig into the theme without requiring a half-page essay on Why My Design Could, Maybe, If You Look At It Just The Right Way, Possibly Be Construed As Not Entirely Non-Cyberpunk. Regrettably, at least three of the entries that fogged needed that essay.

I'm starting to feel like the threat in this coming Silver Screen Derby is going to be just as toothless as ever. We keep getting promised a bunch of rejections for not being on theme, and then the only rejections that really stick are the ones where the artist breaks the no-gradient rule, or didn't use the right shirt template, or used too many colors. Apparently, adding a studded leather collar to a tomato is enough to sail past the Rejectionator. Maybe the Rejectionator's got more on its mind...maybe a divorce, a love-child with the hired help...

I like to look at it as the dawn of cyberpunk. Industrial robot rebels against its masters, that' s pretty punk.
It doesn't have to have a mohawk or look like it fell out of the Matrix to be cyberpunk in my book.

Hey, I'm glad you think it looks good!

If you consider cyberpunk an aesthetic concept, then no- my design is not very cyberpunk. But otherwise, I think my design captures a lot of the essence of cyberpunk narratives. Granted, it's all in the details (the hovering google mapping car, the bars in the windows of the house and its broken mailbox (symbolism, eh?), all the data and power wires connecting the house to the grid, the corporate logo on the planes, robot, and car, the omnipresence of power and surveilance represented by the huge robot with the corporate logo on its LCD screen chest towering over your home... I know many of these details are hard to see in the small image woot provides, but in the actual print I think these details will be a bit clearer.

I know I'm not going to sway a lot people into thinking this is cyberpunk if they don't, and I totally get that this is not a typical cyberpunk design. But please understand that I was attempting to address the theme with my design, not simply making a pretty picture and slapping on a convoluted excuse.

This is a great shirt no doubt... but there is also no doubt at all that it is definitely not "cyber punk". I'll be shocked if one single 'on theme' shirt prints this week. Robots do not make it cyber punk folks.

"Cyberpunk is a postmodern and science fiction genre noted for its focus on "high tech and low life.""

There is some "high tech" here, but where is the "low life"? Cyber punk is not defined by mohawks or the matrix, but this shirt is definitely missing one key element to the cyber punk theme. And that is the punk.

Punk: a. A young person, especially a member of a rebellious counterculture group.

Nothing about this shirt (as well designed and easy on the eyes as it may be. Seriously nice work on the art) says "punk". Not a single aspect.

Being a guy, I don't have much issue with someone peering closely at my chestal region trying to pick out the details and assemble the essence of a cyberpunk narrative from it...but there are some who might.

This time last week, I was jazzed about the cyberpunk theme. I anticipated (sight unseen) buying at least two, if not all three designs. Based on the fog, looks like I'm saving some money.

"This shirt tells the world: “Cyberpunk? No idea what that is.”"

I also find it hilarious that Woot is basically admitting that it isn't on theme at all with this comment. I understand they are a business and they want to make money, so they are probably letting the designs that they think will sell well slide past the rejectionator (that's probably why ramby never gets rejected). Honestly, there is NOTHING wrong with that. But if that is really what is going on why do they continue this ruse as if the theme actually matters? Just show your true colors Woot.

I made my point as well as I can. Glad some people think it's cyberpunk, but I understand that a lot don't.

AND I'm really happy that most people like the design itself and thanks for making that distinction.

Hopefully for the community the pure cyberpunk fog'd entries make it to print this week. Especially Kasey's "Censor This" Awesome work.

and Joel, Barbara, and Travis?
-just quit rejecting things for other than technical reasons. it's hugely unfair. we all understand why you didn't reject this for being other than nearly completely unrelated to the theme, but the profit-tinted looking glass you examine this design with ain't the one that gets so many people in so many other derbies rejected for not quite meeting the theme.

No problem. Like I said, the art is wonderful. I just don't see cyberpunk in it at all. And yes, Kasey's shirt might just be the best 'on topic' shirt in the derby IMO.

Cyberpunk is very specific and not open to interpretation in my book. Hell, just Google image search "cyberpunk" and look at the images that appear. I didn't see a single giant Japanese robot. Again, I am not knocking your hard work or your excellent art, it's just my opinion on the theme (which in the end doesn't mean squat really).

I was so excited when I saw the theme to this derby because I thought it would bring some truly awesome punk style designs. I should just learn to not get my hopes up when it comes to woot. If I were the rejectionator I would have stamped many many shirts this week with a "Not Punk Enough" reason. I want someone to start a site that directly competes with Woot. I would like to see the exact same style of competition and voting where they actually have clearly defined rules where designs strictly adhere to the theme. There are other sites that do the "shirt a day" thing, but none that I know of have a derby like Woot does.

i'm going to abstain from the "is this cyberpunk or not" debate, because at this stage in the game, it's a moot point.

regardless of theme, woot shirts i would buy and wear have come few and far between of late, so i'm snapping one of these up while i can. my first purchase [for myself] in quite a while, though i'm sincerely hoping some of my other fogged favourites might also make the cut this weekend, as i'd love to add another KaseyFleming shirt to my collection.

Frankly I don't see anything this week that screams cyberpunk. And some of the best shirts don't come from the Derby. This is the design I was hoping to get printed, so if it doesn't rigidly adhere to what some people's idea of the theme is, I don't care. I got the shirt I wanted.
