This reminds me of those cartoons in the margins of Mad Magazine

No pun in the title but an ironic submision from "ApeLad"...

You're a stylistic chameleon Spiritgreen, matching the style to the idea. In this case you have hit on an excellent idea and done another great job in the drawing and coloring department. Now you've got the Mint Royale remix in my head.

DUDE! I'm currently living in Japan and this shirt would rock it. Got my vote.

Now this I like. Not sure the blood will make it past the PG-13 meter (or possibly the pre-1950 since they never used blood like that). Awesome shirt either way!

This doesn't even look printable to me. I could be very wrong but I have no idea how the girl has the effects she does without gradients or lines that are too small.

Hope you like the design this week. Here are a few detail shots. Not sure why but the halftones don't view very well on my shirt comp. Hope you enjoy.

Hopefully you don't find it too harsh of me to suggest that this feels like a preliminary drawing compared to a lot of your other stuff. I appreciate people might go for the sketchy style, but always wonder how your ideas would develop if this was treated as a mock-up, then fleshed it out with more polished execution. These are the thoughts of an admirer of your work, so hopefully you take it as such.

I'd say that any more "finishing" would completely ruin the effect and the appeal. You really nailed it odyssey. Excellent job!

Love this idea. I think it would be much better without the person in it. I think that the stylized spaceships are enough to imply the golden age of 3-D films.

wepnar wrote:Well there was a smattering of females dressed as pirates in the classic swashbucklers and I'll agree that this girl is wearing a pirate outfit but she just as easily (or perhaps more appropriately) belongs in the contemporary pirate genre such as Pirates of the Caribbean. The fit of the clothes along with the wide kick ass stance would never be in an old school classic, to say nothing of her features and hairstyle. So to me she is a just a girl in a pirate outfit rather than any homage to the classic swashbuckling genre. She belongs in a pirate themed derby not a classic movie one.

Exactly.

This design looks great and it's really well executed. I think you're the only person in the derby that did a good job of using the silver shirt.

No offense taken, at all. For me (and this may sound like a cop-out), I feel like my designs lose so much energy when I start trying to make them polished. The whole process becomes tedious, and I find the end result to be somewhat bland. Believe it or not, I actually did do a preliminary color sketch, before doing this version. I really like the idea of just indicating things, instead of drawing each and every thing. For me the real polish is in the colors, and taking some real time to pick the ones that I think are "just right".

I understand that this isn't going to appeal to everybody, and some people will look and think I just scribbled everywhere.I promise I approached this in a logical manner, and tried to lay down every line with a purpose.

Thanks for all the nice comments, everybody. This is a style that I've been playing with the last couple of weeks. I was a little worried that people here might not take to it. I'm happy to see it getting a positive reaction.

Re: OZ NOIR

This is great stylistically! The art just needs a few tweaks imo. Her left arm is disproportionately small, especially her hand. and her right arm is coming from a weirdly low elbow. Also, it would help the stiffness if her feet were apart a little bit! like, with one back and more on the toe, if that makes sense. Think as if you were actually standing in front of a microphone and draw that Her face is really pretty btw, not trying to be down on your art, it's nice! just a few small changes that would make it perfecto!

I could be wrong, but this just seems like an illustration in the artist's portfolio that he's trying to shoehorn into this derby. It's gorgeous and very well executed, but I really don't see how it fits the theme at all. I'm sure it will print though.

Thanks so much everyone!

I tried to push myself to do something different and challenging this week for the big 200. I really appreciate the feedback and support.

@manikx66, it's probably my animation background that makes me use slightly different styles for backgrounds. My aim is to make the character stand out more but I understand how that might not be everyone's cup of tea. ^_^

Re: FLASH! Ahh Ah Ahhh!

I can't get the dang song out of my head...

This is a homage to "Space Soldiers Conquer the Universe" 1940. Flash Gordon at its corny best.

I went simple this week. I think it fits with the over all feel of Flash Gordon.

Hope you enjoy. Cheers!

Evokes the era's cinema advertising but appeals to the modern shirt wearer. Get in the fog already!
