It's time to go back to the alphabetic well, and this week we want to see how the fifteenth letter of the modern Latin alphabet inspires you. It's the fourth most commonly-used letter in the English language, after all, and one of the most common characters in all the alphabets. So give us your best O-inspired designs: the primary subject matter of your shirt MUST start with the letter O. It;ll be more fun if you pack as many O-things in your design as possible but it's not a requirement. Now for the rules:

No text. But if you want to use images to suggest the shape of the letter O, that's fine. We look forward to your O-shaped opera of ostriches in the Orpheum.

Things that start with the letter O in languages other than English are allowed. Be prepared to prove it's a real word and actually spoken by real people.

Introducing the Mystery Icon! We're thinking of a specific design element - a person, a place, a thing, an idea. The first contestant to use this Mystery Icon in an entry for this Derby will receive a Woot! screaming monkey, whether they like it or not.

If you're new the concept of a "letter" derby, it's always helpful to look at past letter derbies to see what generally flies and what doesn't:

T
C
S
V

The new Mystery Idol is akin to the Secret Word in PeeWee's Playhouse. We'll pick a secret "Mystery Idol" related to the derby theme and the first person to use it wins. It won't be the most obvious thing or the most obscure, and it's possible a derby or multiple derbies could pass with no one winning. The idol will be chosen when we pick the themes and multiple people will know what it is beforehand.

What about proper names and fictional characters, like Ophelia?

I'm going to be fashionably late 'cause I'm not feeling too hot, but it's neat to have a wide open derby again. :^)

the Orpheum was mentioned in the description, so I'd guess it's a go. I'm hoping so, the idea I'm brewing already uses one.

And that "no text" rule ... IT'S A CONSPIRACY! Woot did that just to prevent the likes of Adder from resubmitting his greatest work ever.

I'm curious as well about proper names and such. There are some good "O" characters or so.

Just so we're clear, the Mystery Idol has something to do with the letter O in this derby, right? Or am I reading that wrong?

So which is it?
Idol?
(Something visible but without substance)
Icon?
(An image; a representation)
Which?
Tell me.

Big "Office Space" freak, first thing I thought was "O" face, too!

"I might even show her my "O" face... Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh Yeah, you know what I mean, right?!"

Does anyone have a really good template of a blank shirt that is being -worn-?

I downloaded one from the forums that has blank shirts, but they are stand-alone ones. I'd like one actually on a person.

Anyone?

Bueller?

-thanks!-

Yes, it will be related to the derby theme of that week.

Crikey, I think an idea just hit me. Ow!

Well, I'm always thinking about Japanese Martial Arts, so the next idea I had was the greatest Aikido Master of all time, O'sensei Ueshiba Morihei. He was wise as an Owl and strong as an Ox. He was also known for his circular movement and his signature enzo (which looks like an "O").

I think I have enough "O" stuff to make a Martial Arts entry, so I'm gonna call, "MINE!"

See you in the derby. (Oh wait, I'm Blind!)

Mentioning Pee Wee Harman always seems to remind me of:

"Tell'em large Marge sent ya!"

Anyways, back on topic:

I love these letter themed derbies and all, but I'm worried that since this is the letter O we'll probably get quite a few "oddball" entries. Not that those or bad or anything, in fact, I have a few shirts that would fall under that category. I'm hoping that if it does happen, that we get something totally outside of the box.

This is great, I was just thinking last night that I'm sick of these OMGOMGOMGPONIESOMG PONIES! derby themes. I love the letters of the alphabet because they allow more freedom for the artists. I even went back through the archives at all the great letter entries.

Wonder if "O Noes!" counts?

So I'll play it safe and not do that.

I hope we can get at least one "Ono Kine" or "Onolicious", both Hawaiian pidgin terms.

I'm probably gonna do a "Order of the Occult" shirt with a group of all O named animals (ostrich, otter, owl, octopus, orca, ox) dressed in robes sacrificing a NON-O animal like a squirrel or zebra. I'll probably throw a couple obsidian daggers and oleanders for good measure. This will all take place on a O shaped alter.
