Thanks to tip from someone who will remain anonymous, the way Woot bases the daily sales rate and the rank in the reckoning is NOT by ongoing days, but by using future-based accounting. So for a Sunday derby winner like Life Choices, its sales are automatically divided for the 8 days that it will have by the time the reckoning occurs this coming Monday, even though only 4 days has elapsed thus so far. Which now makes the numbers make sense ...

Well, even a great one would debut lower than actual and subsequently climb higher over the week, as the denominator is fixed, but the numerator continues to rise.

Taking a 3rd place derby winner for example again ...

Sunday - debut day. Sales don't count.
Monday - day 2, and bystander. It sells 80, which would suggest a DSR of 80, but since Woot bases it out to the end of the next reckoning period, it's 80/8, or a DSR of 10.
Tuesday - day 3, and in the new reckoning period. DSR of 10 places it at like 25th to start. Through the day, it sells another 40, so total sales by the end of the day is 120. 120/8 = DSR of 15.
Wednesday - day 4, and its DSR lifts it up to 23rd. It sells another 40, for a total of 160 now, and a DSR of 20.
Thursday - day 5, and it's probably at 19th now. Another 32 sales, and so 192/8 = 24, and it's probably at 16th now. ... and so on.

That makes a surprising amount of sense. Nice work, Narfcake, and hats off to your anonymous tipster!

Unrelated: did anyone else notice that today's woot email said "Teach Talks Funny" was the second place finisher? When I saw it I did a double-take and thought woot had decided to put the winner up yesterday (didn't get a chance to look at woot yesterday at all).

The speculation was that it was Darth Substitute and Woot decided it was too close for comfort. At 4 am, I had another thought - it was Truf Shuff's and Woot decided not to go toe to toe with the Rat [M-I-C...K-E-Y....]

... and because someone wanted this in a more mathematical terms, and in a way will explain (and debunk) my DSR math from prior derbies, especially regarding 3rd place designs:

#1 derby has Friday debut, then Saturday-Monday (3 days) to build up sales. It enters the reckoning with 3 days of sales already out of the 10 it will have before the reckoning period ends, so it enters with 30% of its sales reporting already.

#2 derby has a Saturday debut, then Sunday and Monday (2 days) to build up sales. It'll enter with 2 days out of 9, or 22.2% ...

#3 derby has a Sunday debut, then only Monday to build sales. It'll enter with just 1 out of 8, or 12.5% ...

This is in contrast with say the previous week's #1, which has 10/17 (58.8%) to start, or a 4+ week oldbie, which would have 21/28 (75%) to start.

As the days progress, they get nearer to the 100% mark, but because the most recent derby winners started out lower, they have the greatest chance to rise in ranks. By the end of tonight, #1/2/3 will respectively have 6/5/4 days to report, or 60%/55%/50% of its (strongest) sales figures factored in.

If the above reckoning information is correct, the question I would propose is: what calculation for "DSR" is actually more useful to provide?

The fixed denominator DSR unfairly penalizes all shirts that have sold for less than 4 weeks at the start of every reckoning period, but matches woot's ranking.

The variable denominator DSR won't match woot's ranking until it converges on the final day, but will more fairly judge what will survive.

Both are valid perspectives, but I can understand why Woot uses the fixed denominator method - it feels a lot better to see a shirt rise up from the lower ranks than it is to see it fall from like first place on day #1 to whatever in a week's time.

The ranking penalty is probably not as serious as it sounds, though, as the recent shirts do have their best sales numbers numbers (debut week) to factor in.

This week, all those around the danger zone have been around 4+ weeks, so it's all still relative to each other. As of last night, 21st is 27 sales behind 20th place, and 22nd is 48 behind. Unless that gap closes a lot by Sunday night, I think it's safe to say he's not going to even try saving either of them come Monday, what with today's Substitute Teacher, Mr. Dark Helmet and all.

To calculate approximately how many additional sales is necessary, take the difference between the DSR, multiply by the number of days for the shirt's basis, and round up to the next whole number. 20th and 21st are both oldies, so it's 28-days ... and that means it will take approximately 32 more sales of 21st to reach 20th place's sales rate. Between 20th and 18th ... just 3 sales. 18th and 17th ... 104.

Full disclosure: I own four of these shirts - I am NOT a ramyb hater.

It'll be interesting to watch what happens to the numbers tomorrow. If Narf is correct about the number of shirts needed to save 21 and 22, they SHOULD go away at Noon Tejas Time. Substitute Teacher SHOULD put Funny Things into the bottom of the lot after Noon. Predictions: Aztec Sunset and Seasons will go away, but Funny Things will see some remarkable sales just before Noon.

Edit: Funny Things' remarkable sales will be due to both ramyb fanboys and girls AND loads of elementary school teachers going back to school.

I have shots of the shirts - on me - in Alaska, but don't want to insult the eyes of Wooters by putting them up.

The Ice Scream is trying to get out of that permanant deep freeze. If Narf is correct, it'll need huge sales in the next 18 hours.

Definitely somewhat dating myself here, but I feel like a solid percentage of woot-goers are with me here... I love all the 8-bit style shirts!!! Morning Power-Up? Cake or Death? The Perfect Moment? If I didn't already have enough Woot shirts to choke a rhino, thus making each purchase decision sheer agony, I would be rocking all three of those. Possibly at the same time...

A woot-off AND a random in a week? Woot sure has its way of making us fill our closets and empty our accounts.

As for the DSR ... 22nd place would have one that's somewhere in between 21st and 23rd, but since it came out on the 11th, there would only be 11 days to factor. While 21st needs 30 shirts to make up for 28 days of sales, 22nd could make up that with 19 sales, presuming that its DSR is only .01 more than 23rd place. Of course, that's only for the present moment ... any additional sales of 20th place will affect those numbers too.
