Where was Woot and Apelad when I was in school. I'd have worn this to school.

I don't know.

I've played trombone for 20 years, and the teacher's hands are in an odd position. The bell should be bigger and a bit farther from her head, the slide should be much longer, and the grip seems reversed, though it's tough to tell because of the silhouette (the slide is used with the thumb and middle and index fingers on the slide bar, not the edge of the slide). And the omission of the MUTE is almost too much. Without the mute, you don't get the "womp womp womp" sound, which is the whole point.

It's a cool design and concept... but trombonists will have a hard time not nitpicking it.

I showed this to my wife who is an elementary school teacher, and suggested that she buy some of these for her teacher friends.

She said, "That'd be great, if I was a band teacher."

Sigh....

My husband and I agree with you. The MUTE is the "whole point". It is a deal-breaker for the 2 band geeks here. We just can't see past this being overlooked. :-( Rock on to those trombonists who can! :-)

Bummer. Otherwise, the design/shirt would have been an instabuy for him - a card carrying band geek and Peanuts fan. Sorry ApeLad. :-(

Looking for MXLs Alien Sonogram, Tin: Old Skool, Puppet Checkup and Flesh Wound from Teefury; A Wicked Mess, F5 Refreshes You, and Sissy Fight. PM or teetrade (tomsman)for trade or sell.

I always thought they used the plunger type mute. (not the fixed ones like others posted)

With these, you can manipulate the tone by moving the mute closer or further from the bell and get the "wha-wha" effect.

You mean a plunger?

Because on a trombone, its generally just an (unused) plunger, which is what I believe they used for the tv show

Just as a follow-up... Teacher Talks Funny was the 1st place shirt. For some reason there was an error in the initial write-up (if you notice the 1st Place badge was always on the Teacher sales image), but there's no error in the vote tally. Rest-assured, there was no phantom first place shirt.

I played trombone...and could care less about the mute. It would have looked silly with it, and gotten a little jumbled on the illustration. Thanks for keeping it simple! Obviously the highest percentage of voting individuals got the joke and appreciated it well enough even without the technical burden.

FWIW, I've been a professional trombonist for almost 20 years, and the lack of a mute and the minor inaccuracies in the drawing of the trombone don't bother me. Besides, the mute used isn't commonly known (as seen by the guesses above), so I can't really fault the artist for omitting it.

The teacher's voice was played by a trombonist named Dean Hubbard using a solotone mute, the same type that can be seen here (at 0:23).

Solotones have a particularly muffled sound, and Hubbard used that along with a few playing "tricks" to emulate a comically indistinct voice. He might have added some wah-wah effects from fanning his hand or a plunger over the end of the mute, but the basic sound is from the solotone.

Funny shirt, ApeLad... I'm in for one.

That is just silly, it is an elementary classroom, she obviously didn't get the jok that it is charlie brown's teacher, and that is where her voice comes from. I am a teacher and I laughed my a@@ off and immediately voted for this, and now have one on it's way to my house!

Now that I've slept on it... I'm starting to feel indifferent. Is it absolutely accurate? No. But, as a longtime trombonist, I'm beginning to think I absolutely MUST have this shirt regardless because it is pretty awesome.

Oh well... still 10 more hours to think about it...
