I'd buy the argument that it's a 127 Hours reference if "And that's why you always leave a note" wasn't a direct quote from Arrested Development.

This is one of the most entertaining leaps of assumption I've ever read.

I don't like this for the same reason I don't like analyzing poetry. If I have to take the time to figure out what a shirt means and then have endless debates over what the creator actually meant, it's not worth it.

Oh, plus I didn't like Arrested Development so I didn't watch enough to get the reference.

It's a shame I haven't enjoyed any of the shirts for about a month now.

More than worrisome. If this had been in a Derby, it would have been out. Also, it seems weird that we can't reference Woot in a shirt for the Derby, but Woot sells shirts where a bunch of us don't get the reference (I came to the community page JUST to find out what this shirt was about, because if you don't get the reference, it seems to be a generally insensitive shirt about suicide. I think even if I had gotten the reference, I wouldn't want to wear this, as I wouldn't want to make people who've lost someone to suicide all upset upon seeing my shirt.)

Anyway, the fact that the graphic/message is already out there seems anti-Woot. And the ethics of the shirt for those who don't know the show are poor.

For those who haven't seen the episode/scene from Arrested Development (or just want to relive the good ol' days)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gv2kaXP6Uv0

The shirt is in referenced to the scene between 10seconds and 48seconds.

And my day got worse because it seems that very few people have been exposed to the great art that was Arrested Development. Anyway even though I have entirely too many Woot shirts I am getting 3. But who gets the other two I can’t decide yet.

This show ruined a entire theatre watching Scott Pilgram vs. The world, when I shouted out "Thats Ann" in the middle of the movie.

What the what? For AD fans, it's a pretty damn obvious reference. Is it unusual that Woot would cater to an audience for a show that was canceled after three seasons for low ratings? Yeah. That there's a debate about the referense is probably a testament to the show's low ratings; it's absolutely an AD reference, no question.

But it's not an abstract shirt.

Agreed. I'm buying it b/c I thought it was a 127 reference.

It is a reference to Aaron Reynolds [Aron Ralston](yes 127 hours). In the movie he says he should have left a note, in the book he says he knows that he should always let someone know. At the end of the movie it says "Aaron is still an avid climber but now he always leaves a note"

Maybe the scene that has had the video linked to, transcribed, and described about 20 times now? You know, the one that has the line "And that's why you always leave a note."

It still might... Everyone's still working on it. Jason Bateman was on The Daily Show a few weeks ago, and said that currently the holdup is getting Mitch Hurwitz signed to a deal. I can't (refuse to) believe that deal won't get done, and the script is supposed to be mostly done, so hopefully we'll start hearing real news about it soon.

At first I didn't understand the shirt at all, as I've only seen about three episodes of Arrested Development. Then I googled the quote and found the clip and realized I have seen the episode this quote is from. And so I laughed. And laughed. And laughed. Oh boy.

Just did some research. Aron Ralston cut off his arm in May 2003. He made the news and was given a lot of air. The episode Pier Pressure aired In January of 2004. AD was known for it's timely references. So we can sum up that even if this was directly a reference from AD, They MOST LIKELY did get their materiel from the headlines of a man learning a lesson in quite a drastic fashion.

This is the final conclusion I'm going with.

I'm confused by how many people are saying "I'm too old" along with something that sounds like "kids these days and their TV shows that aren't like the ones I walked uphill both ways to watch, keep off my lawn!"

My parents are in their fifties, and they and all of their friends enjoyed Arrested Development. I've never met anyone from the US/Canada who hasn't even *heard* of Arrested Development, and I know many many people who have seen it, and until this thread, I had never heard of anyone not liking it. Seriously. What I'm saying is, this is hardly an unreasonable idea for a design. There are plenty of references on woot's shirts to video games and things like that that I don't get, but that doesn't mean that there's something wrong with the shirt. It just means it's something I don't get.

The rules for derbies don't apply to the daily shirts that Woot! picks themselves. And, even in the derbies, whether or not text is allowed is dependent on the rules of the specific derby.

i am the designer of this shirt...

It is unfortunate that we can't see the EXACT date this shirt was posted on redbubble.com but judging by the forum comments under the shirt, it might have been added 18 days ago. (the oldest comment)

the timeline was:
1 - 8/3/2011 - i started designing the shirt (the date "Created" of the original vector file, when i right click the file and hit properties)

2 - 8/17/2011 - submitted the design to woot sometime around august 17th or 18th. (you don't get an email confirmation when you submit a shirt, so i am basing that date on the date-created info on the jpg preview i sent them)

3 - 8/24/2011 - woot contacted me saying they will be running the shirt - (quote from the email): "There may be a delay of some weeks before we are able to find a spot for your design, but I will go ahead and send your contract in the next few days. "

4 - 8/25/2011 - i uploaded the file design and filled out the contract with woot.

It is very possible that my design was already in woots hands before the redbubble.com version of the shirt concept ever was posted. ( Although i am making the assumption that people commented the first day it went up.)
I am posting this because despite the similarity of this design to mine, i believe that there is enough evidence to suggest i didn't copy another artists work.
It is merely a funny idea 2 artists had, independently of each other about the BEST TVSHOW EVER.

sorry for this mini-novel ... i just wanted to vehemently contradict any claim that i stole another artists work, offering as much evidence as i can.
Stealing a design is IGNORANT, and you will get busted. I looked around the web before i sent it to woot and never found the idea anywhere.

For the record....
