I like the spray painted outline effect on the side. Makes it look like this was a DIY shirt or something.

A Bansky tribute piece with mainstream video games?

It's a paradox worthy of Doc Brown!

Wait, you don't throw the flower. You just touch it and it allows you to throw fireballs.

There are 10 kinds of people in this world: those who can read binary and those who can't.

Yeah DIY all right. It's supposed to be stencil graffiti 'cause it's a play on Banksy's "Love Is In The Air".

I think I would prefer this on a red or green.

Mario looks a bit like a bearded hobo in this one.

The cloth over Mario's face may make it more accurate to the original art, but it kind of makes it look like he has a beard which is just strange.

I'm a sucker for most video game shirts, but I really don't see me wearing this one, ever. Definitely had potential, ...pass.

I feel like this should have Bowser as the one throwing the flower.

From what I've read about Banksy, him acting the part of the loner rebel type who fights against "the system" would definetly be better paralleled by the King of the Koopas.

After all, Mario represents the establishment and he's always trying to rescue the princess to restore the "totalitarian regime" of the Mushroom Kingdom. Bowser is always going in and disrupting that system.

Right?

Actually, I thought it wanted to be on silver. Somehow, the stencil effect and silver seem to work for me.

I like it and it looks like a cross stitch pattern. Would it be too, too terrible to buy it and cross stitch it? In appropriate, tasteful colors, of course.

Yeah... It would have worked better if it was drawn more closely in the style of the reference than going the 8-bit route. It just leaves everyone confused.

Given this is 8-bit I'd expect the flowwers to move very slowly, pixel by pixel, across the shirt.

Faster or slower than Mooninites?

I wish they'd done the flower in color. That would've been an instant sale for me. As it is, I'm still considering it, but it's not a "must-have" anymore.

not trying to be a jerk, but the spray-painted edges kill it for me. i would have bought if not for them.

Why do this to me? I just dropped two bills on Woot tees last night, so now I can't afford to get this! I'll just exit through the gift shop....

Great reference!

There's a neat layer of subversion when you consider the fire flower is the weapon of choice in the mushroom kingdom too.

Subverting the subversive. That's so post-post modern. :^)

Yeah, the flower in color would have made this. Without it, this is a neat idea but I can't see me wearing it. :\

Don't you people understand? This war has been going on for too long now. They steal our princess and ruin our land, and we strike back using fireballs and destroying any piece of man-made brick we can find - only to have them retaliate by stealing the princess back again. It's a never-ending cycle! But enough is enough. Jumping on the heads of our enemies just isn't the answer. It's time to do what we plumbers do best: love. Let's change this Mushroom Kingdom for the better - one goomba at a time.

Streamed "Exit Through the Gift Shop" the other day on Netflix. Highly recommended!... the movie... not Netflix.

After reading the comments, this shirt is pretty brilliant. It's too bad that I doubt any of my friends would get the reference, so I don't think they'd be able to appreciate as much as I do now. =(

it always bothers me a little when different parts of the same pixelated image are done in different resolutions...makes me wonder why mario is so blocky if the artist had the (assumed) computing power to make the flower more detailed.

It's a message by the artist to return to a simpler way of life before it's too late... or something...

Normally, I agree, and that was my first reaction as well. But once I saw the original art that this is a tribute (parody?) to, I'm a little less critical of the difference of pixel size. In the original, the flowers about to be chucked seem to be a totally different art style, which (along with the fact they're colored) is very jarring and disjointed with the chucker. Similar to the different-looking Fire Flower.

As for the spray paint, think about it. A lot of Banksy's art is stencils. So it's as if someone walked up and spray-painted a stencil of this on your chest. Again, makes sense.

Though, yeah, the Fire Flower may have looked better in color. But I guess it goes back to the design choice of making it look like it was grafitti done with a stencil and black spray paint. Several of the "Love is in the Air" flower chucker stencils are all-black. So whatever, it's cool.

Exactly. Looks like the guy did two drawings of about the same size in a square grid, then photocopied the first one to a smaller scale (the flower) and glued to the other one (Mario). Really makes no sense. Might as well have glued a photographic reproduction of a real flower, if he wanted contrast.
