Staff

Is it just us, or is Halloween kind of dying on the vine? No one comes to our neighborhood to trick-or-treat, the only people having parties are PBR-swilling hipsters, and almost everyone has their kids inside by the time it's dark outside. What happened? We're bringing Halloween back with our annual Derby ode to the spookiest holiday of all. So give us your best Halloween designs, be they menacing monsters, cheerful children begging for treats, or maybe just a shirt you can wear in place of a costume. Whatever you decide to do, be sure to follow these rules:

  • No video games.
  • No Star Wars.
  • No text-only designs. You can use text, but you must have a graphical element.
  • No resubmissions from Halloweens past. Give us something new.
  • No copyrighted characters. It's always a rule, but keep it in mind if the temptation to use a well-known movie monster strikes.

And finally, a warning: we'll be running our own specially-selected Halloween designs all next week, and if yours happens to be close to one of them we'll be rejecting it. As with all things Woot, don't get all butthurt about it.

would a drawing based on the scream be too close to copywrited? I have a drawing I did back in college based on it that I think would be cute...but if it'll get rejected I wont bother with it

"Butthurt"??

Nothing about w00t makes me feel "butthurt"...

Except maybe the end of Two-Fer Tuesdays. Sad face.

Good restrictions. I'm hopeful to finally purchase a Halloween-ish shirt this time around.

I have a "Gorgon Gourd" idea that I have sketched up, but could use the help of a more professional derby-er to bring it to fruition--so to speak.

Oh yay! Text allowed!

I have something I submitted as a daily this year but was turned down. I'll see how well it does in this derby. It's based on this lion-face meme. Sideways B always made me think of buck-teeth...

I love Halloween, it's our favorite holiday by far. Haven't entered in awhile but will this week. One is ready to go, unless anyone has suggestions for improvement. I'm not 100% on the text.

I already have a design nearing the finish, having anticipated Hallowoot coming up. I'm still mulling another idea, too. I'm hoping I can post the first to photobucket tonite for comments. It's a werewolf and werepup, howling at the moon. Working title is 'That's my boy!".
Still mulling one I talked about in the WIP thred. It's not coming together. A pair of cute kiddie Trick or Treaters in front of a cutesy-decorated house; but the house is a facade with a monster behind it. Anyone got thoughts, interest in helping?
I also have a partial drawing of a third idea - a totally kawaii kitten in a witch hat. Soooo trite. Smells like money to me! >evil grin<

I've been drawing this all day, thinking Hallowoot was nearly upon us.

Do you think it would be better with or without the text?

Drat, I have to head to work now and won't be back until late. Was hoping to get a collab on this idea. I'll be back tonight and hoping to see if any one has messaged me.

I think it works as well either way. Either the moon or the number 13 could be the halloween reference (plus the moon doubly for the werewolf). I'd err on the side of caution and omit it, but that's MHO.

Awesome. Was the bird to feather logical jump an intentional omission for the sake of brevity (ease of logical expression)?

Yeah, you already rocked that theme, eh SG?

The presence of text is nice, but it'll be hard to avoid woot's already "in the pipe" ideas. It's like the hidden theme, but instead of a free shirt/monkey if you get it right, you get REJECTED!

Not as cool a prize.

It's a reference to Charlie Brown/Snoopy. Linus spends every Halloween in a pumpkin patch, waiting for the Great Pumpkin to appear.

An intentional omission - it was already getting quite long, and I wish I could have cut it down a little more, but I had to keep the core for the humor to be evident.
