Staff

If you don't read the Woot blog (and if you don't, what the heck is wrong with you?) you might not have learned that Jeopardy! wunderkind, trivia savant, and all around cool guy Ken Jennings* writes a regular column for the site debunking myths and imparting some knowledge. In fact, Ken's so good at this sort of thing that he's written a new book, Maphead, detailing the facts, figures, and freaks of the map nerd trivia world. Which brings us to this week's Derby theme: to commemorate the launch of his book, we're revisiting the topic of Maps. You may remember we did a map-themed Derby way back when, but it's been long enough that we feel we can safely revisit the idea.

Give us your best map ideas, be they maps to hidden treasure, maps of the best spots to play in the neighborhood, or maybe a map to a mythical realm only you know about. Maybe it's a depiction of map-reading gone wrong, or someone upset at where their map has led them. You can also play with the concept of "Maphead" in whatever way you see fit. We'll run the usual 1st through 3rd place shirts, and Ken Jennings himself will mark one shirt a special "Ken's Pick" winner. All four winners will get a signed copy of Ken Jennings' latest book, Maphead! So get to cartographizing!

  • No text only designs. You must have a graphical element.
  • No celebrity likenesses. You'll have to send your erotic caricatures of Ken to his publicist the same way we did.
  • No maps of fictional worlds you didn't create. Yes, make up your own continent. No, don't give us a map of Narnia or Oz or whatever.

*Ken Jennings is the author of Brainiac, Ken Jennings's Trivia Almanac, and the forthcoming Maphead. Follow him at ken-jennings.com or on Twitter as @KenJennings.

I guess I can try making that dog map idea I didn't finish for the dog derby. Yeah, it was weird.

Sweet!

I'm always telling myself I wish there were more shirts about maps.

Or something.

Don't call him Shirley!

Meanwhile i picked the wrong week to give up horse tranquilizers...

I hope my idea works, looks swell in my head. Now, will anyone go after me for not coming up with an original uncopyrighted version of the US map?

"Mom, dad! Don't touch it, it's evil!"

HAHA! I watched that just a few days ago. Now I wish you could design a map to "The Most Fabulous Object in the World," but that would probably fall under the restriction for fictional places you didn't create yourself.

Ah well, thanks for confirming for me that I'm not the only one who has watched that classic.

"The Island of Missing/Lost Objects"

Beyond the Sock-Pile Mountains there lies the sandy shores where the loose change reefs caused a small tourist boat to crash. However, beyond the "seven stranded castaways" pier, as you go inland toward the formerly mentioned mountains, you must first navigate the forest of misplaced library books.

Beware though! The forest is a dangerous place populated by all the cats and dogs that ever were lost by their owners.

Does that help? If not, it was still fun to write it.

Just finished sketching out an idea.

Hamsters always seem like they're trying to get somewhere on their wheel, but wind up going nowhere. So the design has a "map" for them to follow, where the starting point is the same as the destination. The smaller text on the map says things like 'food dish' and 'water bottle', etc.

I'd love some opinions and suggestions before I refine it. I'm thinking I might change the piece of paper to an iPhone...
