The giant "E" is giving me a sort of illusion effect. Sometimes it looks like its puffed out, sometimes it looks indented.

Anyone else seeing that?

What do you call an iron that causes wrinkles?

An ironic.

That's gonna rust awful quick if it's really 100% iron. Gonna need some chromium in the mix if it's gonna have any longevity. Nevermind the carbon, but then again it's a statue, not a knife...

Should have had '2.718' on the shirt instead of 'e'

When I first saw it, I thought this shirt was an homage to Euler's constant and I was really excited. Is it ironic that now that I know what it actually is, I don't want it anymore?

Ironically, This looks more like War-machinE.

I just got done watching Iron Man 2, so I know. =P

The only thing ironic here is that the artist is convinced he knows what "irony" means.

The use of words expressing something other than their literal intention.
Now that, is, irony.

The text ruins this shirt. Using the lowercase letter doesn't help either.

Gaucho85

quality posts: 1 Private Messages Gaucho85

That's actually wrong. "Irony" requires that the happening (whatever is ironic) be the opposite of what is expected.

Perhaps it's sad that my first thought was that this was Euler's "e" (2.718 etc.). Perhaps not.

No, as bender stated earlier in that very episode, something that is coincidental or unexpected is not ironic.

Irony
Noun:
The expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect.

Irony means one thing and one thing only. You don't get to make up new definitions for a word because people aren't using it correctly. You don't get to make up a term like "dramatic irony" (typically referring to when the reader/viewer/audience knows something a character does not).

Bender is absolutely correct.

Maybe he doesn't. Maybe you don't. Maybe even I don't. Nevertheless, it seems clear that someone did.

Your prescriptionist position just flat-out doesn't hold in English. There is no authority, though even for languages where there is almost no one outside the academy walls cares. In this case, your attempted dictate was violated more than century ago. That Wikipedia article has a reference to someone commenting on hundreds of definitions for "irony" in 1906.

I wasn't aware that, for example, dramatic irony and situational irony were the same "one thing only." ... Edit: Oh, so you're denying that dramatic irony even exists. Okay then...

And to stay on topic, the first thing I thought of when I saw this shirt was Internet Explorer, and I shuddered with revulsion.

I wondered that, myself. In fact, I didn't get it at all until I read the little plaque underneath the 'e.' Before then, I kept wondering where the 'F' was.

Glad someone else was on the same page.
